McDonald's Delivers Another Year of Strong Results In 2009

OAK BROOK, Ill., Jan. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- McDonald's Corporation today announced strong results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2009, driven by global comparable sales growth.

"McDonald's 2009 results reflect the broad-based strength of our global business," said McDonald's Chief Executive Officer, Jim Skinner. "Our in-demand food and beverages, unparalleled convenience and superior value at every level of our menu enabled us to serve 60 million customers per day during 2009, up 2 million per day over the prior year. In addition, McDonald's profitability increased as we marked our sixth consecutive year of positive comparable sales in every geographic segment and generated higher global revenues, operating income and earnings per share in constant currencies - all tremendous accomplishments given the tough global economy."

Full year 2009 highlights included: -- Global comparable sales increase of 3.8%, fueled by the U.S. 2.6%, Europe 5.2% and Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa 3.4% -- Growth in McDonald's combined operating margin to 30.1% -- Consolidated operating income increase of 6% (10% in constant currencies) over the prior year -- Earnings per share of $4.11, up 9% (13% in constant currencies) over the prior year -- Return of $5.1 billion to shareholders through shares repurchased and dividends paid, bringing the three-year total to $16.6 billion under the Company's $15 billion to $17 billion cash return to shareholders target for 2007 through 2009 Fourth quarter highlights included: -- Global comparable sales increase of 2.3%, with all segments reporting positive results -- Operating income increases in the U.S. 5%, Europe 20% (10% in constant currencies) and Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa 51% (28% in constant currencies) -- Earnings per share of $1.11, including an $0.08 per share benefit primarily due to the resolution of certain liabilities retained in connection with the 2007 Latin America developmental license transaction. Currency translation also benefited earnings by $0.07 per share -- On January 21, McDonald's Board of Directors declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.55 per share of common stock, payable on March 15, 2010 to shareholders of record at the close of business on March 1, 2010

Throughout 2009, McDonald's U.S. sales outpaced the overall quick-service restaurant industry and drove market share increases. In the fourth quarter, U.S. operating income rose as consumers enjoyed core menu favorites, everyday value offerings and new premium products, including McCafe espresso-based coffees and the Angus Third Pounder, and commodity costs eased.

McDonald's Europe delivered strong comparable sales for the fourth quarter against robust prior year results. The U.K., France and Russia led the segment's operating income growth for the quarter. Emphasis on fourth-tier menu development, premium product innovation, daypart expansion and restaurant reimaging continued to provide an appealing restaurant experience and drive market share gains.

In the fourth quarter, Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa (APMEA) delivered impressive double-digit operating income growth fueled by results in Australia, expansion in China and operating efficiencies and lower commodity costs in many markets. Strong execution in convenience, value, core menu and breakfast continued to drive APMEA's performance.

Jim Skinner concluded, "As we begin 2010, McDonald's January global comparable sales trend remains positive. We will continue our fiscal discipline by investing prudently and returning excess cash to shareholders. I am confident that the collective efforts of our franchisees, suppliers and employees will continue to drive value for all stakeholders."

McDonald's (MCD) had Investor Day in Chicago yesterday, and treated the analysts to breakfast AND lunch, and a pretty well developed presentation of US, Europe, APNEA, corporate and marketing actions underway. We monitored the discussion, and relate the following interesting points that might get lost otherwise:

      * While they didn't want to get trapped into a number going forward, MCD had helped fund franchisees strategic leasehold improvement CAPEX--the McCafe expansion-- and might do so again for future initiatives. McDonald's owns a significant amount of the buildings and real estate, and credit is tight, even for McDonald's franchisees.

      * Most every financial metric displayed--restaurant margin, franchising margin, ROIC and ROIIC--were up versus 2004 in every Division.

      * The average US McDonald's franchisee unit had operational cash flow of $314K/unit last year (likely pre-debt service), and average equity of $4.7M per owner/operator. WOW !

      * The MCD marketing machine is well developed, with national and local-co-ops all plugging away on multiple, supportive and complimentary brand and product themes, and a great R&D pipeline. One result is that McDonald's value menu mix percentage was only 10-11% (13-14% if you count the doublecheeseburger). Ergo, MCD doesn't run the same risk that Burger King (BKC) does by rolling the dice and putting its more limited TV behind a low end item, like the $.99 doublecheeseburger.

      * MCD's early research estimated that of McCafe sales, 44% was incremental and 56% was tradeup. Either way, they win, if those numbers hold. That is one of the highest incremental gains seen in a long time.

      * MCD's European average annual unit sales (AUVs) are great--$3.4M US average in Europe, $2.4M in the US and $1.8M in Asia/Pacific/Middle East/Africa. Russia was at $5.5M...wow ! No wonder the MCD company ownership ratio was highest in Russia (as it should be, because the ROI works). MCD does not refranchise to chase percentage margins--like some did (SONC)-- but does so on a disciplined basis.

      * MCD's current media spending mix included 72% broadcast (down), and 12% digital (up). It is increasing its value oriented messaging next year.

MCD will be pressed to keep US same store sales positive--October was down .1%, and it's an emotionally sensitive metric. But these results overall show alot of size, scale and focus advantages.

McDonald's plans to open 1,000 new locations in 2010, mostly in China, Australia and Europe

CHICAGO (AP) -- McDonald's Corp., already the world's largest hamburger chain, will add 1,000 locations next year, the fast food chain said Thursday.

During a meeting with Wall Street analysts, executives said the new locations will will be concentrated in China, Australia, Russia, Germany, France and the U.S.

McDonald's already operates 32,000 restaurants in 100 countries.

Meanwhile, the restaurant chain said it planned to rehab the inside and outside of 2,300 restaurants next year, about half of which will be in Europe.

The dual efforts, along with other construction plans, will cost about $2.4 billion.

McDonald's, which is based in the Chicago suburb of Oak Brook, Ill., expects its 2009 capital expenditures to hit $2.1 billion this year as it opens nearly 900 new restaurants, according to filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

McDonald's shares fell 58 cents to $62.23 in late-afternoon trading Thursday.

McDonald's Analyst Day Expected To Offer Glimpse At Strategy

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- McDonald's Corp. (MCD) will likely use next Thursday's analyst meeting to highlight strategies to widen its lead in a fast-food industry that's losing customers as unemployment climbs.
Analysts are also looking for details on sales of McDonald's newest products including McCafe specialty coffees and its premium Angus burger, as well as any other new items. An expanded plan to remodel could also be on the table as another sales driver, since refurbished stores tend to attract customers.

Trying to gain market share is "usually their plan for when the global economy is struggling, and their aims will be no different this time around," said Mark Kalinowski, restaurant analyst at Janney Capital Markets.

Rising unemployment and skittish consumer spending have begun to catch up to McDonald's, especially in the U.S.

Monday, McDonald's is expected to post flat to slightly negative U.S. same- store sales for October, a deceleration from prior months. Stronger sales in McDonald's other regions should keep worldwide same-store sales positive for the month. A McDonald's spokeswoman declined to comment ahead of the release.

In the U.S., McDonald's is now facing an unemployment rate of 10.2% and even higher among fast-food's most-frequent customers, as well as heightened discounting. Burger King Holdings Inc. (BKC) is selling its double cheeseburger for $1 while Wendy's, of Wendy's/Arby's Inc. (WEN), plans to add a new value offering to its menu sometime early next year.

McDonald's is holding steady with its Dollar Menu, and doesn't plan any major changes to it. It is testing $1 breakfast items in some markets as sales during that time are more vulnerable to joblessness.

While McDonald's business has outperformed most restaurants, shares have fallen slightly this year as investors chased returns in companies that had more room for improvement. McDonald's shares were recently at $61.92, off 0.7% in a year the Dow Jones Industrial Average has jumped 14.2%.

McDonald's is also trying to shake the notion that the recession was a boon to business. While it may have picked up customers trading down from full-service restaurants, McDonald's executives think it lost more diners who gave up eating out altogether. As the economy improves, McDonald's hopes those customers will begin coming back.

"I don't think what we're seeing is just a recession-related story," said Peter Jankovskis, co-chief investment officer at Oakbrook Investments LLC, which owns about 300,000 McDonald's shares. "They're selling products the customer wants and delivering them at a very reasonable price. That's always in vogue, whether you're in a recession or not."

McDonald's is also expected to announce plans for returning capital to shareholders after fulfilling a goal of spending $15 million to $17 billion on dividend payments and share buybacks over the last three years.

Jede Sekunde zählt: Wraps kosten McDonalds Geld
