Grange sees higher output at Tasmania operation

PERTH (miningweekly.com) − Magnetite miner Grange Resources said on Tuesday that production at its Savage River operation, in Tasmania, could increase by between 200 000 t/y and 300 000 t/y, by 2012, as toll treatment options were scrutinised.

“Grange is in discussions with several companies that have magnetite ore deposits within reasonable proximity to the Savage River mine,” said MD Russell Clark.

“While these companies are at differing stages in bringing their assets into production, we are working together with the aim of reaching agreement to use the Savage River downstream processing and distribution infrastructure to add value for the benefit of both Grange and the new producers,” said Clark.

He noted that the guidance for the Savage River operations remained unchanged at two-million tons of pellet production and sales for 2011, however, this was set to increase to around 2.3-million tons in 2012 and 2013.

During the quarter ended June, the Savage River operation produced some 510 546 t of magnetite concentrate, compared with the 349 328 t produced in the previous quarter. Around 520 785 t of magnetite pellets were produced during the quarter under review.

Clark said that Grange has continued the remediation cut back of the east wall, which had been brought forward from 2012/13, as a result of the rock slide that occurred in June last year.

“The Savage River operations continue to perform well with the east wall cut back progressing to plan. As previously advised, we expect to be back mining the main orebody in North Pit in the fourth quarter of 2011, as this stage of the east wall cut back reaches its conclusion.”

Clark added that while the cut back was being developed, the company was mining lower-grade satellite pits, and was treating more tons through the concentrator to compensate.

Meanwhile, Clark also reported that the Southdown project, in Western Australia, was set to complete its definitive feasibility study by the first quarter of 2012.

“The prefeasibility study of our growth project, Southdown, was completed in the March quarter. The strong iron-ore price outlook, positive net present value and favourable returns forecasted at this stage provide the owners the confidence to approve the funding for the definitive feasibility study.”

The Southdown project has already gained environmental approval from the Environmental Protection Authority to expand the capacity of the Southdown operation from 6.8-million tons a year to ten-million tons a year.

Grange was looking to develop the Southdown magnetite openpit mine at an initial rate of 6.6-million tons a year. The magnetite concentrate would be pumped to the port of Albany before being loaded and shipped to an iron-ore pellet plant.

Shares in Grange Resources rose after the iron ore producer said it was in talks with companies near its Savage River mine in Tasmania about possibly providing processing services.

Grange shares were up four cents, or eight per cent, at 54 cents at 1529 AEST.

Grange, which produces magnetite iron ore pellets, said the talks were being held with several companies that hold magnetite iron ore deposits in Tasmania's north-west region.

Some of these had not yet been brought into production.

"We are working together with the aim of reaching agreement to use the Savage River downstream processing and distribution infrastructure to add vale for the benefit of both Grange and the new producers," Grange said in a statement on Tuesday.

"This has the potential to increase production at Savage River by between 200,000 and 300,000 tonnes per annum of magnetite concentrate as soon as 2012."

Chief executive Russell Clark said an announcement about the progress of the talks was expected in coming weeks.

Mr Clark said charging the companies a toll to treat their ore was an option to them having to build their own costly processing infrastructure.

"I think we all realise there are synergies to be had," he told AAP.

"The specific mechanics of what would happen haven't been finalised by any means."

Grange also on Tuesday reported June quarter pellet shipments of 517,404 tonnes, up from 209,798 tonnes for the March quarter, but down from 581,357 tonnes in the June quarter of 2010.

The company was forced to feed lower grade ores through the concentrator after a rock slide last month prompted the company to bring forward remediation work on the east wall of the main pit.

Costs of pellet production doubled to $123.67 a tonne due to factors including longer ore haulage distances and additional equipment.

The company reiterated its full year production and sales target of two million tonnes.

19 July 2011 ASX:GRR Grange Resources Limited Australia’s leading magnetite producer REPORT FOR THE QUARTER ENDED 30 JUNE 2011 HIGHLIGHTS Grange has delivered another solid quarter to shareholders. Savage River continues to enjoy strong commodity prices with excellent cash generation and development of the Southdown project near Albany in Western Australia is progressing on schedule and under budget. Highlights for the June Quarter include: Continued excellent safety performance at Savage River.

Strong cash and trade receivables position of $183.7 million and no net debt at the end of the quarter. Pellet prices remained very strong during the quarter averaging US$222 per tonne. Grange remains “on track” to produce approximately two million tonnes of pellets in 2011.

Savage River east wall recovery plan proceeding to schedule. Year to date costs lower than budgeted. Southdown project definitive feasibility study funding approved, with completion due first quarter 2012.

EPA approval granted to increase production at Southdown to 10 million tonnes of magnetite concentrate per annum. Grange Managing Director, Mr Russell Clark, said “Our excellent safety performance continues with no Lost Time Incidents (LTIs) recorded for over 11 months. Our employees are to be congratulated, and I think this result is a great reflection of the improved management processes introduced to the site over the past two years.” “As previously advised, Grange has agreed an IODEX based index pricing mechanism for pellet sales to its two major customers, Shagang and BlueScope Steel.

We have received all the revenue associated with the interim pricing adjustment from last year and have averaged a pellet price of US$ 222 per tonne for the June quarter, in line with expectations set in the last quarterly. Whilst global prices have reduced slightly in recent weeks, we expect the average price in September quarter to remain around US$200 per tonne of pellets (FOB Port Latta).” “Our guidance for the Savage River operations remains at two million tonnes of pellet production and sales in 2011.” “The Savage River operations continue to perform well with the east wall cut back progressing to plan. As previously advised, we expect to be back mining the main ore body in North Pit in the fourth quarter of 2011, as this stage of the east wall cut back reaches its conclusion.

Whilst the cut back is being undertaken, we are mining lower grade satellite pits, and have had the concentrator treating more tonnes to compensate. Costs ....

      hallo,
