Chinese push to cut pollution a boon for Grange
By SEAN FORD Jan. 16, 2014, 10 a.m
BIG North-West miner Grange Resources is heading into a strong year, a respected resources market analyst says.
The Chinese Government pressuring steel mills to cut pollution is a key reason why Macquarie Securities' Hayden Bairstow expects iron ore pellet producer Grange to do well in 2014.
"GRR (Grange) offers excellent exposure to the expanding iron ore lump and pellet premium,'' Mr Bairstow wrote in analysis rating Grange as an ``outperform'' stock.
"The company's Savage River project is expected to produce 2.3 million tonnes of iron ore in 2014, 97 per cent of which are pellets.
"Over the last three months, lump and pellet premiums in China have nearly doubled.
"The widening lump and pellet premiums have been caused by the Chinese Government putting pressure on steel mills to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions.
"In order to reduce sulphur emissions, steel mills generally increase the amount of direct charge iron-ore into the raw material mix.''
Lower grades at Savage River had hurt Grange in 2013, Mr Bairstow said.
However, he said recovery was well under way and he expected production would increase from a forecast 1.8 million tonnes for 2013 to 2.3 million tonnes in 2014.
He expected growing exposure to high-grade areas of the Savage River deposit would allow Grange to get production up to 2.8-2.9 million tonnes a year by 2017.

Australian Grange's Q4 magnetite pellet value rises 35% on stronger premiums
Singapore (Platts)--17Jan2014/237 am EST/737 GMT
Australia's Grange Resources said Friday it had seen a 35% increase in the value of its magnetite pellets over the past 12 months due to stronger pellet premiums.
The Tasmania-based company received an average A$161.42/mt ($142.29/mt) FOB Port Latta for pellet sales over October-December 2013, compared with A$119.09/mt in the December 2012 quarter and A$145.87/mt in the previous September 2013 quarter, Grange said in its Q4 2013 report.
The company said pellet premiums in China had "nearly doubled" over the December quarter as the country's steel mills tried to reduce their sulfur dioxide emissions by using better quality raw materials.
"The steel mills generally build a 'shandy' using their usual input of lower grade raw materials and blending it with premium grade materials such as lump and Grange's premium pellet," Grange said.
Brazil's Vale settled its 2014 annual pellet premium with Japanese and South Korean mills at $38/mt, $10/mt higher than last year. Chinese mills have typically paid a lower premium on pellets than their Japanese and South Korean rivals and the market is more fragmented, but they are now being forced to pay more to meet environmental obligations.
Macquarie Equities Research analyst Hayden Bairstow said in note on Grange Thursday that the current spike in the pellet premium had "occurred at a time when margins have been contracting [due to weaker steel prices], suggesting this is a policy-driven rather than market-driven increase in pellet demand."
Grange sold 565,816 dry mt of pellets in the October-December quarter from its Savage River mine in northern Tasmania, up 14% from 494,697 dmt a year earlier, and 14% higher than 517,884 dmt in the September quarter. Grange was unavailable for comment.

North Pit delivers better output for Grange
PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Magnetite miner Grange Resources has reported a significant increase in concentrate and pellet production for the three months to December, as high-grade ore in the North pit of its Savage River operations, in Tasmania, was accessed.
During the quarter ended December, Grange delivered 632 906 t of concentrate, compared with the 472 108 t delivered during the previous quarter. Pellet production during the quarter was up by 39% on the September quarter, to reach 619 414 t.
“During the quarter, we continued to leverage our return to higher-grade ore in the North pit to mine and produce 632 906 t of iron-ore products at an annualised rate in excess of 2.5-million tonnes a year, with the grade averaging 46%,” said Grange MD Wayne Bould.
He noted that the quarter also saw a strong return of interest in high-grade pellet products from core Chinese markets, which resulted in Grange achieving an average sales price of $149.39/t.
Some 565 816 t of iron-ore pellets were sold during the quarter under review, along with 61 t of iron-ore concentrate.
“Grange’s performance in the fourth quarter caps off a difficult transitional year from an operational perspective, and positions us to move into 2014 on a more positive note,” said Bould.
He pointed out that the company had recovered from the June 2012 wall failure, regained access to the high-grade main orezone in the North pit and returned to production at planned rates.
“In addition, we have returned unit operating costs to competitive annualised rates in a sales market which is currently supporting a return of quality product premiums.
“At current operating levels, we expect to generate solid cash flows through 2014,” Bould added.
For 2014, Grange was expecting to produce some 2.3-million tonnes of iron-ore products.

Grange Resources keen to cut Southdown mine start-up costs
Posted Fri 17 Jan 2014, 2:25pm AEDT
Iron ore miner Grange Resources has launched an internal review of its proposed Southdown magnetite mine, near Albany, to see if the project start-up can be cheaper than the estimated multi-billion-dollar cost.
Grange announced in late 2012 it was reducing expenditure and cutting staff from the project, saying it was waiting for market conditions to improve.
The company says, with conditions still tough, it is reviewing if initial start-up capital requirements and ongoing costs can be reduced.
It says it is considering changes in market outlook, construction conditions and methodologies learned from operations in Tasmania.
In its quarterly results released this morning, Grange announced its iron ore sales for the December quarter were up 10 per cent on the three months to the end of September.
