CATL probably offers cheaper battery prices – subject to conditions
According to Chinese media, CATL wants to significantly reduce battery prices for selected car manufacturers. From the third quarter of 2023, CATL will offer some customers lower prices if they agree to buy at least 80 percent of their batteries from CATL. According to industry insiders, the selected manufacturers to whom CATL has made this offer include Nio, Li Auto, Huawei and Zeekr, but not Tesla. Some of the car manufacturers are already in the process of signing the cooperation. This is reported by the “36 Krypton” portal, which is usually well-informed on topics relating to Asian cell manufacturers. With the LFP cells for its base variants of the Model 3 and Model Y, Tesla is one of the largest single CATL customers. Nio, for example, only signed a new five-year collaboration with CATL in January 2023 . Zeekr, in turn, is one of the first customers to use the Qilin battery (i.e. the latest generation of CATL's cell-to-pack technology ) in their vehicles. According to the report, when the prices of battery materials such as lithium carbonate rose sharply last year, CATL began implementing a mechanism to peg battery prices to raw material costs. The core element of CATL's offer should now be that the said car manufacturers set a price of 200,000 yuan (currently the equivalent of around 27,300 euros) per ton of lithium carbonate for the next three years - as described above, on the condition that at least 80 percent get their batteries from CATL. Currently, battery-grade lithium carbonate is listed at about 470,000 yuan per ton. Thus, the offer would correspond to a significant saving in one of the important battery materials. CATL has demanded price reductions of around ten percent from its raw material suppliers. CATL did not respond to a request for comment from "36 Krypton". Some companies in the industry are probably reacting with skepticism. CATL appears to be using its dominant market position to impose its prices. "It will make it difficult for other battery factories," 36 Krypton quoted an insider as saying. SVOLT Energy is also said to have introduced a ten percent price reduction and asked raw material suppliers to support it.

Albemarle expects 40% Chinese EV market growth to drive lithium demand
Lithium giant Albemarle Corp expects China's electric vehicle (EV) market to grow 40% this year, or at least by 3 million vehicles, boosting demand for the battery metal in the world's largest auto market.
China's government has been phasing out subsidies for EVs, but Albemarle said so far those steps have had only a "limited impact" on EV demand. Executives attributed weak Chinese auto sales data in January to the Lunar New Year holiday.
Chinese lithium customers are not slowing orders and the country's stockpiles of cathodes and battery parts are decreasing, a harbinger of demand for the battery metal, executives said.
"Our biggest challenge is managing the tremendous growth opportunity in front of us," Chief Executive Kent Masters told investors on a conference call after the company posted better-than-expected quarterly results.
Separately, executives said they hoped the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act would make permitting easier for its planned lithium mine in Kings Mountain, North Carolina, and that they are open to partnering with an automaker for a planned European lithium processing plant.
The company is also in "active discussions" about restructuring its MRBL joint venture in Australia with Mineral Resources Ltd.
