Russian bid for Berkeley's uranium may fall flat

RUSSIA'S efforts to lock in uranium reserves held by Australian-listed companies in overseas locations has hit a roadblock.

One of the Russian targets, Berkeley Resources, has decided it might be best to pursue financing alternatives for its Salamanca uranium project in Spain rather than negotiate an agreed bid with the Russian steelmaker Severstal.

In October it was announced Severstal could bid $2 a share for Berkeley. But Berkeley said yesterday the pair had ''not yet been able to agree terms'' for a bid. It said Severstal had come back with an ''alternative transaction proposal.''

But because of the ''recent substantial improvements in the price of uranium and the valuation of uranium assets,'' the company now thinks it should ''consider the fullest possible range of financing alternatives''.

Berkeley has said previously that Korean Electric Power Corp could be one of the groups with which it could discuss financing alternatives if the Severstal negotiations stalled.

Berkeley shares fell 2.5¢ to $1.765 in response to news that the proposed bid from Severstal might not come to fruition.

The company's reference to the improved uranium market relates to the uranium price, which has continued its recovery from the lows experienced after the global financial crisis. The spot price was last quoted at $US62.50 a pound.

Market valuations of uranium stocks have also changed for the better, and the mid-December agreed takeover bid by Russia's state atomic energy corporation, Rosatom, for the ASX-listed Tanzanian uranium developer Mantra Resources has helped that.

The $8-a-share bid by Rosatom's mining arm, ARMZ, valued Mantra at $1.16 billion. That represents $US10.26 a pound for the resource that Mantra has outlined at its Mkuju River uranium site in Tanzania.

That came close to the $US12 a pound that investors have been paying for established producers.

Die notwendigen Mittel sollen jedoch aus dem Cashflow generiert werden. Ggf. einfach noch mal etwas mehr mit dem Wert als solches Beschäftigen.


der 2. Satz war überflüssig. WENN man sich "etwas mehr" mit dem Wert beschäftigt hat, ist unschwer zu erkennen, dass völlig offen ist, ob der CF ausreichen wird, um Zona 7 in Produktion zu bringen. WENN man ein bißchen Erfahrung hat im Rohstoffbereich, dann weiß man, dass die "total operating cost" längst nicht alle Kosten des Unternehmens sind.
