German Service Provider riodata Selects Redback for Broadband Deployment; Redback
SMSs to be deployed in over 800 co-locations and POPs across Germany

ROTTERDAM, the Netherlands, Apr 25, 2000 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Redback Networks
(Nasdaq: RBAK) today announced that the German service provider riodata is
deploying Redback Subscriber Management Systems(TM) (SMS) at the heart of its
new broadband DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) service.

To enable this service, riodata is planning one of the most ambitious DSL
deployments for Europe to date, and is building a completely new network to
provide fast, reliable broadband access for business users.

The first phase of riodata`s broadband service will roll out in eight German
cities in June, with the ultimate objective of reaching more than 100 German
cities in the next year. Initial implementations will be ADSL- (Asymmetrical
DSL) and SDSL-based (Symmetrical DSL) high-speed access, with other broadband
business services, including web hosting, applications hosting, VPNs (virtual
private networks), and voice over IP planned as follow-on offerings. The company
ultimately expects its network to reach across Europe as local loop unbundling
de-regulates communications markets in other countries.

riodata is using Redback`s Subscriber Management Systems to perform the
profiling, billing, dynamic provisioning and routing functions required for the
high volumes of subscribers it expects to attract. The company will deploy a
Redback SMS 500 in each of its DSLAM (DSL access multiplexer) co-locations,
which will ultimately total nearly 800 sites. Additionally, it will use the
larger SMS 1800 in each of its POPs (Points of Presence). This comprehensive
infrastructure will ensure complete redundancy throughout the network, and will
also enable riodata to provide service selection on a highly localized basis.
Another advantage of co-locating the SMS 500s with the DSLAMs -- an unusual
configuration -- is that localized service selection will keep unnecessary
traffic away from the backbone, relieving pressure from busy core routers.

"Because effective subscriber management will be a key part of our service
offering, technology from several vendors was thoroughly evaluated," explained
riodata`s Chief Executive Officer Alex Stadler. "Only Redback was able to
provide a working solution that performed as we demanded. Their SMS solutions
also gave the flexibility needed in this fast-changing business, as they provide
auto-provisioning for new services and dynamic bandwidth selection to ensure
consistent service quality for our customers. A third significant factor in our
choice was Redback`s ability to handle subscribers from multiple services within
one device, which gives riodata in-built future-proofing as new broadband access
      technologies become prominent."

By 2003, industry analyst IDC predicts revenues from DSL services in Europe will
be (US)$ 2 billion generated by 2,464,000 connections. Redback Networks believes
that the prospect of owning a significant share of this market is influencing
service providers like riodata to select highly scalable, production proven
solutions for broadband subscriber management. "riodata selected Redback
technology because it delivers its promises here and now, and is already proven
in large production networks around the world," commented Joop van Aard,
Redback`s vice president of operations for Europe, Middle East and Africa. "Our
SMS solutions have the performance and scalability to handle the high volumes of
business subscribers that riodata is aiming for. Redback relishes the
opportunity to be involved in such an exciting and high-profile infrastructure."
