EU considers mandatory ban on using Huawei to build 5G - FT
June 6 (Reuters) - The European Union is considering a mandatory ban on member-states using companies that might pose a security risk in their 5G networks, including China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.

The move comes as a response to increasing concerns in Brussels about certain national governments delaying action on the matter, the officials told the newspaper.

Malaysia picks Ericsson over Huawei to build 5G network

KUALA LUMPUR - July 1, 2021 - The Malaysian government has awarded Sweden's Ericsson an 11 billion ringgit ($2.6 billion) contract to design and build its 5G telecommunications network, snubbing Chinese competitor Huawei Technologies.

Thursday's announcement comes as Malaysia aims to make 5G connectivity available by year-end and cover 80% of the population by 2024. For starters, services are to be rolled out in Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya as well as multimedia hub Cyberjaya within 2021.

Local media outlet The Edge reported in April that Digital Nasional -- a Finance Ministry entity entrusted with owning and operating the 5G network -- had invited eight vendors to participate in the tender: Ericsson, Huawei, ZTE, Cisco, NEC, Nokia, Samsung and FiberHome.

Malaysia has not shown the same aversion to Huawei as the U.S. and several other Western countries, which have blocked it from bidding for government contracts and especially 5G projects over concerns about security and links to Beijing. In February, Malaysia decided to partner with Huawei on a cybersecurity lab.

Malaysia to end 5G monopoly, allow second network from next year
KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia said on Wednesday it will adopt a dual network model for its 5G roll-out next year following widespread concerns about pricing and competition over a single state-run network.

The decision is the latest by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s six-month-old administration aimed at dismantling monopolies and promoting competition, though it could create tension with Western countries wanting Malaysia to stick with its original plan.

Malaysia had in 2021 unveiled a plan for a state-owned agency, Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB), to own the full 5G spectrum, with various carriers using the infrastructure to provide mobile services.

The government has now decided to allow a second entity after DNB’s coverage reaches 80 per cent of populated areas, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said in a statement.

“This model also takes into account the sustainability of the telecommunications industry ecosystem in Malaysia, thus ending the monopoly element that is often associated with DNB,” the minister added.

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia has extended to January 2024 a deadline for Australian miner Lynas to ensure its rare earths plant in Pahang, the world’s largest, is effectively radiation-free.

      ...
This includes its decision last Wednesday allowing Swedish telecommunications firm Ericsson to continue a nationwide roll-out of Malaysia’s 5G network despite previous claims of abuses in how previous governments handed out contracts for the new mobile technology. This comes amid widespread speculation that Chinese rival Huawei could be brought in as a competitor.

Habeck will in Zukunft keine Huawei-Produkte mehr im 5G-Mobilfunknetz
Berlin, 21.
