Commercial Li-Ion Batteries Made with Novacium's First Gen Engineered Siox Material
Preliminary testing demonstrates a capability to improve performance by more than 14% without noticeable first-cycle degradation [1].

MONTREAL, Feb. 15, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- HPQ Silicon Inc. (“HPQ” or the “Company”) (TSX-V: HPQ) (OTCQB: HPQFF) (FRA: O08), a technology company specializing in green engineering of silica and silicon-based materials is pleased to announce a first significant milestone reached by its France-based affiliate, NOVACIUM SAS ("Novacium").

Novacium commissioned an external laboratory to produce 18650 industrial batteries using its engineered SiOx material, for which HPQ Silicon Inc. holds exclusive global licenses. This process was initiated with the intent to validate the immediate industrial potential of its SiOx material.

The first batch utilized 100% graphite anode material, serving as benchmark batteries for performance comparison. These benchmarks were then compared to the second batch, which consisted of a blend of 90% graphite and 10% of Novacium's first-generation engineered SiOx anode material.

“Charging and discharging cycle tests are ongoing, and preliminary results, after 5 cycles, are not just promising, they exceed our expectations [1],” said Dr. Jed Kraiem Ph.D., COO of Novacium.

Image 1) Dr. Jed Kraiem PhD, COO of Novacium holding an HPQ and Novacium Gen 1 18650 industrial battery.

ACHIEVING 14% BATTERY CAPACITY IMPROVEMENT WITH SILICON INTEGRATION

Achieving a 14% overall improvement in industrial type full-battery capacity compared to the 100% graphite benchmark batteries is indeed a significant accomplishment. These results surpass HPQ/NOVACIUM theoretical estimate of validating a 10% improvement in battery performance for these tests.

The absence of a measurable first cycle degradation, despite incorporating silicon, is particularly noteworthy. Silicon is known to expand and contract during charging and discharging cycles, which can lead to capacity loss. The fact that this issue has been mitigated is a promising sign for the potential application of this technology in battery manufacturing.

      ENGINEERED SiOX MATERIALS STRATEGY

Novacium and HPQ are focused on creating engineered SiOx anode materials designed to improve the performance of graphite-based lithium-ion batteries. These advancements target various applications, including energy storage systems, consumer electronics, and electric vehicles.

PyroGenesis Announces Milestone Reached for Fumed Silica Reactor Project
MONTREAL, Feb. 06, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- PyroGenesis Canada Inc. (http://pyrogenesis.com) (TSX: PYR) (OTCQX: PYRGF) (FRA: 8PY), a high-tech company (the “Company” or “PyroGenesis”) that designs, develops, manufactures and commercializes advanced plasma processes and sustainable solutions which are geared to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) and address environmental pollutants, is pleased to announce that, further to HPQ Silicon Inc’s (“HPQ” or the “Client”) press release dated today, and the Company’s own news releases dated November 9, 2023 and January 11, 2024, the next milestone for pilot plant development has been reached.

The Fumed Silica Reactor (FSR) technology project is being conducted in conjunction with HPQ Silica Polvere Inc. (“HPQ Polvere”), a wholly owned subsidiary of HPQ. With the engineering design having concluded, major fabrication ending, and all additional peripheral materials having been ordered, the 50 tonnes per year (TPY) FSR pilot plant is now entering the construction phase.

      ...
Fumed silica is a moisture-absorbing white microstructure powder with high surface area and low bulk density. Used most often as a thickening agent, anti-caking agent, and stabilizer to improve the texture and consistency of products, the commercial applications of fumed silica can be found in many industries across thousands of product lines, including – but not limited to – personal care, powdered food, pharmaceuticals, agriculture (food & feed), adhesives, paints, sealants, construction, batteries and automotive.

The FSR converts quartz into fumed silica (also known as Pyrogenic Silica) in a single and eco-friendly step while eliminating the use of harmful chemicals generated by conventional methods.[2] The FSR, if successful, could provide a groundbreaking contribution to the repatriation of silica production to North America.

The FSR pilot plant is being developed by PyroGenesis with a 50 tonne per year output capacity. In addition, recent results (refer to the Company’s news release dated January 11, 2024) from an internal economic and technical study, which was carried out at the request of a third-party who requested confidentiality, confirmed the viability of, and advantages from, the eventual scale up to a 1,000 tonne per year commercial configuration. These advantages included potential EBIDTA margins three times higher than the industry average of 20%, and a capital investment 93% less than that required for building a conventional fumed silica plant.[1]

“This development milestone initiates the construction phase of what we believe to be a truly innovative approach to producing one of industry’s most in-demand materials”, said Mr. P. Peter Pascali, CEO and President of PyroGenesis. “Conventional fumed silica processes, which rely on silicon metal (Si) as raw material, not only have a significant carbon footprint of around 9.5 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per tonne of fumed silica, but also present complex process challenges which include, but are not limited to, using hazardous materials.[2] The technology developed by PyroGenesis for HPQ Polvere is designed to offer significant economic and environmental advantages over conventional manufacturers – improving profitability, but also reducing the environmental footprint and reducing the harmful chemicals associated with traditional fumed silica production.”

The fumed silica market, valued at US$1.3 billion in 2022, is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5% to reach US$2.1 billion by 2032. Fumed silica sales accounted for almost 23% of the global specialty silica market at the end of 2021. [3]

      Investitionskosten zwischen US$ 9,00 und US$ 10,00 pro kg Jahreskapazität [5]

      ...

MARKT FÜR INGENIEURISIERTE ANODE-MATERIALIEN AUF SiOx-BASIS IST EXPANDIEREND

US$ [2] und 2,7 Mrd. US$ [3] geschätzt.

HPQ Files Patent Application for New Continuous SiOx Manufacturing Process Based on its Purevap™ QRR Technology

MONTREAL, Canada 17. Nov. 2023 - HPQ Silicon Inc. (“HPQ” or the “Company”) (TSX-V: HPQ) (OTCQB: HPQFF) (FRA: O08), a technology company specializing in green engineering processes for silica and silicon material production is pleased to update shareholders on a recent patent filing related to its “Silicon-based anode material initiative.”

HPQ filed a new provisional patent application in France related to a continuous Silicon Oxide (SiOx) manufacturing process based on a modified PUREVAP™ QRR design. As per French law, HPQ acquired all rights held by the inventors for C$90,000.00. The patent protects a unique QRR technology configuration that allows the production of SiOx on the same equipment.

PATENT EXPANDS QRR TECHNOLOGY WITH MINIMAL DEVELOPMENT RISK

The new patented process has a significant advantage over the standard process in that it enables continuous production of SiOx, whereas the latter is produced in batches. The proposed process can be applied to the QRR without major changes in reactor design, reducing the technological development risks. Additionally, it is worth noting that the price of SiOx is approximately 2 to 3 times more expensive than silicon of the same purity [1].

“This new patent application enhances our value proposition for Silicon-Based Anode materials,” said Mr. Bernard Tourillon, President and CEO of HPQ Silicon Inc. “Our unique PUREVAP™ QRR technology, as you know, can convert quartz into a low carbon 3N+ Si in a single step. A modified PUREVAP™ QRR will leverage this 3N+ Si to produce SiOx, which, as you also know, is highly coveted by the battery industry.”

Compared to conventional processes, HPQ commercial Fumed Silica can be made:

      Using 87% less energy, and
Releasing 84% less CO2 eq emissions

MONTREAL, Canada 8.Nov. 2023 - HPQ Silicon Inc. (“HPQ” or the “Company”) (TSX-V: HPQ) (OTCQB: HPQFF) (FRA: O08), , a technology company specializing in green engineering processes for silica and silicon material production is pleased to update shareholders on the most recent developments on its Fumed Silica Initiative, led by its wholly owned subsidiary, HPQ Silica Polvere Inc. (HPQ Polvere).

Independent analysis done at McGill University confirms that HPQ Polvere’s Fumed Silica Reactor produces commercial-quality hydrophilic material with a high surface area and excellent thickening efficiency.

HPQ FSR VS Traditional Fumed Silica Process
      ...

INDEPENDENT ANALYSIS CONFIRMS HPQ FUMED SILICA MEETS ALL COMMERCIAL CRITERIA

Technology provider PyroGenesis Canada Inc. PyroGenesis Canada Inc. (TSX: PYR) (NASDAQ: PYR) (FRA: 8PY) (Pyrogenesis) sent material made using the lab-scaled model of HPQ Polvere’s proprietary Fumed Silica Reactor (“FSR”) and two different grades of commercially available Fumed Silica materials to an independent third party laboratory (McGill University) for an analysis of their structural and chemical characteristics. The information obtained allowed the production of the Technical Data Sheet (TDS) [1].

The salient point of the analysis is that it confirms that the HPQ-produced Fumed Silica material, made under less-than-optimal operating parameters, is of commercial quality with the following key characteristics [1]:

      It is Hydrophilic,
It possesses High Surface Area (135-185 m2/g), and
      It has Excellent Thickening Efficiency.
      ...

Table 1, HPQ disruptive advantages versus conventional processes

Data from the latest tests show an expected reduction in energy consumption for Fumed Silica production using the FSR, theoretical estimations show that we can expect a reduction in energy consumption by 87.5% to 90% versus conventional processes. As energy represents one of the largest variable costs in traditional Fumed Silica production processes, HPQ Polvere, with its proprietary Fumed Silica Reactor, gains a substantial economic advantage over traditional manufacturers.

Furthermore, modelization indicate that by using our process, CO2 eq. emissions can be reduced by 84% to 88%, versus traditional processes, surpassing the 50% reduction potential we first mentioned in our July 2023 release.

China's graphite curbs will accelerate plans around alternatives

Oct 20 (Reuters) - China's move on Friday to curb exports of graphite, a key electric vehicle battery material, will only accelerate efforts to develop alternative sources and materials, but that will take time, industry executives and analysts said.
      ...

      SILICON SOLUTION?

Another anode ingredient is silicon, which enables an EV to drive longer distances before recharging.

The maximum amount of silicon added to batteries is about 10% because the material expands during use and can degrade the battery. But companies are working to push that share higher.

U.S. startup GDI, for instance, is developing 100% silicon anodes for batteries. GDI CEO Rob Anstey said his company is talking to most automakers about the technology.

"China is decades ahead in graphite and it's too late to try and catch up," he told Reuters on Friday. "We must move to the next level of lithium-ion and EV performance."

"This is our time to wake up and say, okay we need to start working on the next generation of battery and of materials," he added.

      Global Market & Demand

There is no globally accepted High Purity Quartz (HPQ) specification. However, Sibelco markets its range of products under the brand name IOTA. IOTA categories are defined based on grade, application, purity, and individual elemental contaminations, and several HPQ classifications for benchmarking purposes are used internationally. A common categorization method is to use SiO2 content as a measure of HPQ quality as follows (Exawatt and ANZAPLAN, 2021).

      Low-grade HPQ is generally considered to be material of purity greater than 99.995% (or 50 ppm of impurities);
Medium-grade material starting at 99.997% (30 ppm) impurities; and
High-grade HPQ starting at 99.999% (10 ppm) after full processing.

IOTA has set a high purity benchmark for the rest of the HPQ market. It contains 20 ppm per million or less as a standard, equating to >99.998% of SiO2. The IOTA brand is the industry standard for high-quality fused quartz products. Its highest-quality grade used in significant volumes, IOTA6, is a chlorinated product that commands the highest prices of all HPQ types and is required for semiconductor crucibles, quartz glassware and optical fiber cladding. Sibelco’s higher-grade HPQ products such as IOTA8 are only produced in limited quantities.

The table below has been compiled by Greentech from third-party sources, Exawatt and ANZAPLAN, 2021.

Please note that the above table is a guide only and illustrative of what prices the buyers of the Company’s HPQF product may achieve once HPQF has been significantly processed. The Company cannot produce these products at present because it does not have the relevant beneficiation and purification assets.

The naturally occurring feedstock (HPQF) must be quartz of a sufficient grade and an amenable impurity profile to enable cost-effective upgrading to an IOTA or similar standard of specifications. Deposits of quartz that meet these specifications are very rare. The processing required to produce a particular HPQ grade depends on the amount and type of impurities present. It may include crushing, screening, flotation, acid washes, magnetic separation, and/or other physical, chemical, and thermal techniques.

HPQ demand is predicted to increase by over 50% in volume and 90% in value during this decade to a global $2B market by 2030. (Exawatt and ANZAPLAN, 2021)

Exawatt forecast low compared to renewables & solar forecasts

Etwas zu High Purity Quartz, also known as HPQ,:

      Background to HPQ

The term High Purity Quartz, also known as HPQ, is reserved for quartz material that satisfies exacting quality requirements for use in several critical applications in the solar photovoltaic, semiconductor, optical fibre, specialist glassware and optics industries. HPQ feedstock (HPQF) deposits can be defined as naturally occurring quartz in economically viable quantities that are amenable to beneficiation and purification to meet those quality requirements.

The main quality determinants include a very low level of impurities, an application-dependent particle size distribution, and melting behaviour that are acceptable for downstream manufacturers. However, and most importantly, commercially the term HPQ is reserved for processed quartz material that satisfies those exacting standards. None of the products mentioned above can be manufactured without a reliable supply of consistent quality HPQ and HPQF.

The rapidly growing solar PV market is predicted to require significant new sources of supply over at least the remainder of this decade.

      HPQ Global Supply Chain

The HPQ Global Supply Chain comprises the following components:

Miners who supply the HPQ feedstock (HPQF), commonly after some basic crushing, screening and washing. Greentech intends to participate in this part of the supply chain for at least the next two years. It will also investigate the feasibility of building a processing plant to enable it to participate in the next step and become a processor.
Processors who purchase feedstock from miners and apply multistage purification processes to deliver HPQ at greater than 99.99% SiO2 concentration to fabricators.
Fabricators who produce a range of end-products, mainly for the semi-conductor, PV solar panel and specialist glassware industries. Most of the processed HPQ by volume and by value is fabricated into silica crucibles used to grow extremely pure silicon metal crystals and ingots for cutting into the silicon wafers that are the critical components of semi-conductors and photovoltaic cells.

Approximately 70% of the global HPQ supply market is controlled by two companies, Sibelco and QuartzCo, who mine feedstock from their own mines at either end of a single alaskite pegmatite at Spruce Pine, North Carolina in the United States. Both these companies have their own processing facilities and produce a range of very high-purity quartz sand and powder grades to fabricators, but do not undertake fabrication themselves. The balance of the HPQ industry comprises processors and processor-fabricators in Asia, Europe, Russia and Canada.....
