Solartech <1166.HK> shifts to develop B2B & ISP biz

Chan Lai him, chairman of Solartech International, said the business development of its cable and wire products was not so desirable, thus Solartech will shift to develop other businesses. He expressed the group is carefully considering an acquisition of two to three B2B and ISP- related websites.

He added that apart from the proposed acquisition, the company will shift to develop high technology business but declined to disclose the details.

Following China`s World Trade Organization deal, the group will build additional plants in Eastern China and Northern China. The investment will amount to $30 million to $40 million.

The Group is principally engaged in the manufacture and sale of cable and wire products used in the manufacture of electrical and electronic products. Cable and wire products manufactured and sold by the Group can be broadly divided into five main categories, namely power supply cords, extension cords, wire harnesses, telephone cords and accessories and audio-video cables. The principal raw materials used in the manufacture of the above products are Bare Copper Rod and PVC resin. The Group manufactures and sells over 3,000 different specifications of cable and wire products to over 500 customers in more than 20 countries. Most of the customers are based in Asia, North America and Europe. The Group`s customers include electrical and electronic products manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers.
Most of the Group`s products are currently manufactured in accordance with the quality and safety standard specifications as defined by standard and approval authorities around the world, including Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. in the USA, Canadian Standards Association in Canada, Japan Electrical Testing Laboratory in Japan, Verein Deutscher Elektrotechnniker in Germany and China Commission for Conformity Certification of Electrical Equipment in the PRC. In addition, the Group also manufactures cable and wire products to specifications as defined by its OEM customers.
The Group`s head office is based in Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong while its manufacturing facilities are based in Dongguan and Shanghai. The Group has recently expanded its existing factory in Dongguan, and has started producing two new high margin products, enameled copper wire and rubber wire. To further enhance vertical integration and hence margins, Solartech is now building a new copper rod factory in Dongguan which is expected to be completed by mid-1998.
