FANTASTIC BROADBAND ENABLES VIRTUAL CAMPUS FOR GIRNE UNIVERSITY

London (UK), 22 September 2000 - Girne American University (part of The American Educational Consortium), based in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, has teamed up with the National American University from South Dakota USA and the Fantastic Corporation to launch a programme of distance learning courses to be distributed by satellite from BT Tower in London. The trans-continental alliance will use Fantastic`s broadband technology, initially to enable 5000 distance learning BBA students to received high quality interactive materials across Turkey, but in future students may be drawn from countries such as Uzbekistan, Kazakistan and Pakistan.

"Girne will be creating a truly virtual campus," claims Fantastic spokesman, Dr Glenn Wylie. "We are able to send material that has the quality of television but the interactivity of the internet. What is more, we can "multicast" this to specific individuals or groups and be sure that the materials are received anywhere in Europe or the Middle East - a capability that is vital in areas where telecommunications and even postal services may not be one hundred percent reliable. It`s like sending an email in terms of ease and reliability, but it`s more like a TV programme in terms of quality of content. In addition, since the Fantastic transmission system is based on the Internet Protocol (IP), material can be sent to any device that understands IP data - a PC, digital TV, or eventually even a third generation (3G) mobile telephone. Satellite transmission can reach all these easily, reliably and cheaply."

Mahmut Pirhan, Coordinator of the The American Educational Consortium added: "In the past, distance learning has been constrained by the difficulty of getting course material to students. Material that is posted often never arrives. At the other extreme, material that is emailed is limited by network capacities and must be in small files - effectively limiting us to little more than a few PowerPoint slides. Ideally, we need a means of distributing video, sound, data and other files altogether - and broadband supplies that. Satellite multicasting will enable us to reach into rural and remote areas where often a satellite dish and TV are the only reliable contact with the outside world. We will be able to bring high quality courses to places where they have never been available before. Our target this year is 5000 distance learning BBAs and we`ve started signing people up already."

English language course material for the Girne American University BBA is being supplied by the National American University of South Dakota, USA. Academics at GAU tailor this to their own needs and then BBA modules are transferred via an ISDN line to the BT Tower in London from the University Campus in Northern Cyprus. At a scheduled time, these modules are downloaded via satellite to students at speeds of up to 4Mbps (71 times faster than a standard 56Kbps modem). This means that the data on a 300Mb CD can be transferred, on average, in ten minutes by satellite compared with twelve hours by standard modem! As course units range from 20 Mb up to 500 Mb. massive savings in download times will be achieved.

Mr Serhat Akpinar, The American Educational Consortium Chancellor at Girne comments: "Many countries in our region, particularly the Central Asia and Asian Countries, are desperate to build a solid base of people with business degrees as part of their overall development strategy. They also need people with advanced English skills. So there is potentially a massive market for English language business courses. However, as English is not the native language of the students, there are additional barriers to learning. e-Learning technologies have already been shown to improve average learning times by 50 per cent and thus content rich interactive courses are an ideal solution to the needs of the region. We believe this initiative has enormous potential and that ultimately millions could benefit from the knowledge we are now able to impart."

The Fantastic Corporation (Zug, Switzerland) is the leading provider of software solutions for data broadcasting. This is an emerging communications technology which combines point-to-multipoint digital broadcasting with point-to-point Internet connectivity, in order to deliver rich interactive media content to PCs, digital set-top boxes or handheld devices (including 3G mobile phones) over any broadband IP network.

By merging the inherent bandwidth and speed benefits of broadcasting technologies with the interactivity of the Internet, data broadcast provides superior content distribution and interaction in an increasingly IP-centric world. Fantastic`s end-to-end software supports the rapid growth of the "data broadcast" industry.

Fantastic`s global partners and customers include British Telecom, Telecom Italia, Deutsche Telekom, NTT Communicationware, Loral Space and Communications, Reuters, Lucent Technology, Intel, Singapore Press Holdings and Inktomi.
