Qualcomm to invest $500 million to promote CDMA
Tue Nov 14 08:26:00 EST 2000
NEW YORK, Nov 14 (Reuters) - Mobile telecommunications company
Qualcomm Inc. , whose share price has been battered down
from January highs, said on Tuesday it would invest $500 million
in start-up companies over the next four years to promote its CDMA
wireless technology.
The investments will be administered through a new entity,
Qualcomm Ventures, to be run by the company`s senior vice
president of business development, Jeff Jacobs. Each investment is
expected to be for up to $10 million, the company said in a
release.
The venture unit will give preference to early to mid-stage
private ventures, though Qualcomm Inc. will continue to make
larger investments in public companies, joint ventures and
wireless carriers, the release said.
Qualcomm`s CDMA technology, or Code Division Multiple Access,
is the primary system for delivering mobile telephone calls in the
United States. It is one of three competing standards worldwide.
Shares of Qualcomm closed at $75-1/16 on Monday on the Nasdaq
exchange, off a 52-week high of $200.

HONG KONG, Dec 6 (Reuters) - Compaq Computer Corp
said on Wednesday it will invest up to US$30 million in 2001,
through collaborations and joint ventures, in a bid to boost its
presence in China`s fast-growing telecoms market.
Also on Tuesday U.S.-based Compaq and mainland China
networking equipment maker Datang Telecom signed a
memorandum of understanding to collaborate on CDMA-standard
wireless opportunities in China.
Compaq will provide mobile roaming and other technologies to
be integrated into Datang networking products, the companies said
during a telecoms conference in Hong Kong.
Plans by Beijing-backed carrier China Unicom Group to build a
current-generation network using the CDMA standard developed by
U.S.-based Qualcomm Inc gained momentum this week after
a delay-filled year, and CDMA equipment suppliers said they
expect China Unicom Group to begin awarding contracts for
buildout of the network early in 2001.
Philip Yu, president of Compaq Greater China, said his
company stood to see a "very substantial revenue upside" -- in
the range of tens of millions of dollars -- if, as expected, the
first phase of China Unicom Group`s planned CDMA network is built
to serve 10 million customers.
Other CDMA networking equipment makers hoping to sell gear to
the planned China Unicom network include Nortel Networks ,
Motorola Inc , Ericsson , and Lucent Technologies
.
CDMA stands for code division multiple access, and in its
current-generation competes with the European GSM mobile
standard, which is the dominant standard in China.
Datang already supplies CDMA equipment in China to the
military controlled Great Wall Telecom mobile network, which will
soon be merged into China Unicom Group.

Wireless Watch: Spectrum speculation sputters
By Dan Briody
Redherring.com, December 06, 2000
Going once, going twice ... anyone?
Anyone at all? Won`t anyone up the bid
for this extravagant slice of wireless
spectrum?
If you`ve ever been to a live auction,
you know the uncomfortable feeling
that settles on the room when an item
is put up for bidding and it becomes
clear that no one is interested. It`s
particularly harsh when the item is a
work of art, and the artist is present.
And that`s the exact feeling I`m starting
to get about the ongoing wireless
spectrum auctions taking place
around the world.
Just three months ago, wireless
spectrum was the hottest thing on the
market, with some third-generation
(3G) mobile telephone licenses going
for as much as $40 billion a pop in
Germany and the United Kingdom. But
things change, stocks plummet, and
investors demand justification for
massive payouts. As a result, next
week`s regional auction of 422
licenses in 195 U.S. markets is
expected to fall far short of a bidding
war. Part of the reason is that many of
the U.S. providers have been busy
trading spectrum in order to fill gaps in
their coverage area, a more
cost-effective way of adding capacity.
But the main concern is that
telecommunications companies
themselves, let alone their
shareholders, aren`t convinced they
can make enough money off of this
spectrum to justify the costs.
FCC`s auction of wireless
spectrum draws less heat than
expected (Wall Street Journal
Interactive, subscription
required)
Originally, it was thought that telecoms
should dish out almost any sum to
secure wireless spectrum, what with
all the fancy data services and
mobile-commerce and wireless ads
that would generate revenue for them.
But those models have come under fire
lately. Doubts are brewing over the
levels of adoptions those services will
garner and whether companies will be
able to charge for the services. And it is
unclear whether the carriers will reap
the financial benefits of those services
or whether they will be relegated to
simple network operators, renting out
commoditized pipes.
CAN`T GIVE IT AWAY At least part of
the demand for spectrum in recent
auctions has been driven by a desire to
prevent competitors from owning
licenses. Kind of like the New York
Yankees acquiring Jose Canseco not
because they wanted him, but because
they didn`t want the Boston Red Sox to
get him. But in Poland, they can`t even
generate enough bidders for all the
available spectrum. They now have
three bids for five slices of 3G
spectrum. Now that`s embarrassing.
Poland draws just three bidders
for five mobile-phone licenses
(Wall Street Journal Interactive,
subscription required)
The pullback in demand has caused
more than one foreign telecom to
reconsider its strategy. Henri
Piganeau, executive vice president of
French operator Vivendi Telecom
International, was quoted as saying
that expecting consumers to pay more
for 3G wireless Internet services is
nothing more than "wishful thinking."
And the Czech government is now
considering scrapping its whole
auction and figuring out another way
to generate some revenue off of its 3G
spectrum because of fears over
withering demand.
Czechs to reconsider UMTS
auction plans
WHAT NOT TO DO Ultimately, the
telecoms want to avoid what is
happening to Deutsche Telekom (NYSE:
DT) right now. The company has been
criticized relentlessly over the amount
it spent for wireless spectrum in
Europe; questioned about the
feasibility of its pending acquisition of
Voicestream Wireless (Nasdaq: VSTR)
after its stock price imploded; and
constantly roadblocked in any of its
U.S. dealings by my favorite
xenophobe, Senator Fritz Hollings
(D-South Carolina). Deutsche Telekom
is in the telecommunications
equivalent of no man`s land.
Voicestream in auction threat
Deutsche Telekom shares fall on
lower mobile profit
Lots of ideas have been broached
about how to make money on the
wireless Internet. But the world is a
more cynical place now than it was
nine months ago, and the
if-you-build-it-they-will-come
strategy doesn`t fly anymore,
especially when you`re talking about
hundreds of billions of dollars to
develop these networks. With
something as important and critical to
the future of worldwide
communications as next-generation
wireless networks, there has got to be
a way to make a bundle off of it. But
how?

an zwei guten Nasdaq-Tagen. Verkaufen?
Was meint Ihr dazu?
