Will Apple get a second chance to buy Palm? Rumor

According to several industry reports, Palm Computing is in trouble, looking to make some pretty stiff cuts to its business - or perhaps even find a buyer. This is of particular interest to us Mac users, because it`s well known (Steve Jobs quietly admitted to it about a year after the fact) that Apple has made overtures to buy Palm before.
Apple has had a long time since then to plan how it wants to address the demand for ultralight, ultraportable hand-sized computers. Some murmurings have come and gone in that time about revivals of Apple`s old Newton hand-held technology (or at least the name), but so far little concrete has surfaced about any such project.
Right now, it looks like Apple`s Next Big Thing is all about having the coolest high-end and mid-range computers, and filling in the gap of the true entry-level with Digital Hub appliances that forego some of the niceties of full-blown "Computers" for pure functional efficiency in a given market that is all about the consumer, not the professional or the businessperson. Clearly something that addresses the hand-held marketplace is in order, but that doesn`t necessarily mean that the device will itself actually be a hand-held as such.
With so many major long-term projects at Apple at last coming to fruition, now may not be the time for the company to get an injection of technology such as Palm`s, nor the tremendous endeavour of taking the reins of such a large platform as the Palm OS.
And then, of course, there`s the political hit Apple would probably have to take when it terminated Palm OS licenses -- which would seem to be a very likely outcome of a Palm buyout by Apple, since Apple`s all about control of the total package.
In the final analysis, this reminds us of the buzz about Apple buying Be, Inc. - some nice ideas, but not a great fit for Apple`s present situation. It`s all within the realm of possibility, but it does not appear particularly likely

Kauft Apple Palm auf?
Dream on: Doch noch ein "Newton Revival"?

Man konnte es in diversen News lesen: dem Hersteller der bekannten Palm-PDAs mit eigenem PalmOS geht es schlecht, das Unternehmen schreibt tief rote Zahlen. Das weckt Begehrlichkeiten für eine friedliche oder auch "feindliche" Übernahme. Wäre das etwas für Apple?
MacOS Rumors verweist darauf, dass Apple schon einmal den Handheld-Produzenten kaufen wollte. Jetzt wäre die Gelegenheit möglicherweise günstig; gerade in das Konzept des "Digital Hub" bzw. "Digital Lifestyle" würde eine Wiederbelebung des von vielen vermissten Newton in neuem Gewand gut passen. Auch in den neuen Apple Stores wären PDAs mit coolem Apfel-Logo sicherlich eine attraktive Bereicherung des Angebots. Die Lizenzen des PalmOS würde man sobald wie möglich streichen, das läge in der Konsequenz von Steve Jobs‘ Marktpolitik und hat sich trotz aller anfänglichen Kritik als recht erfolgreich erwiesen. Eine entsprechende Präsentation auf der nächsten MacWorld Expo im Juli in New York oder wieder auf einer eigens einberufenen Pressekonferenz hätte sicherlich einen riesigen Knalleffekt. Dagegen spricht nur, dass der Apple-CEO bisher kein ausgewiesener Fan von PDAs war. Doch wer weiß, einen Mangel an Flexibilität, wenn es um den Erfolg seiner Firma ging, konnte man Steve noch nie vorwerfen!

bei einer Übernahme von Palm durch Apple würde sich nur die Frage nach dem Preis stellen. Palm scheint mir mit einer aktuellen Marktkapitalisierung von nahezu 3 Mrd. $ immer noch immens überteuert, oder ???
