Vitesse Extends Leadership in Managed Layer 2 Gigabit Ethernet Switching With the Production Availability of the VSC737x Family; VSC737x Family Offers Scalable, Inexpensive, Managed, Layer 2 Switch Solutions for OEMs and ODMs

CAMARILLO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 12, 2005--Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (NASDAQ:VTSS), the market leader in Gigabit Ethernet ICs, today announced the production availability of its Layer 2 Gigabit Ethernet product family the VSC737x, further extending its leadership in the managed, Layer 2 Gigabit Ethernet switching market. The VSC737x family consists of three products offering 16-port, 24-port, and 26-port configurations known as the VSC7372, VSC7374, and VSC7376, respectively. All three Gigabit Ethernet switches are non-blocking with advanced Quality of Service (QoS), and offer network security and management to maximize network performance, utilization, and efficiency.

The VSC737x family has fully-integrated SerDes/SGMII interfaces and associated memory, tables, and forwarding logic. This balance of features and configuration makes these devices ideal for embedded applications such as Gigabit Ethernet backplanes, line cards, and Internet Service Provider (ISP) Layer 2 edge pizza-box and chassis systems. Managed LAN switches designed with the VSC737x family can also be used to easily upgrade enterprise networks, providing Gigabit Ethernet to the desktop utilizing the existing cable infrastructure, and thus, increasing the overall network performance with minimal IT spending.

"With the production availability of our VSC737x product family, we have extended our leadership in the managed Gigabit Ethernet switching segment," said Martyn Humphries, vice president and general manager of the Ethernet Products Division of Vitesse. "Our switching technology along with our superior Octal PHY technology continues to outpace the industry in delivering the most robust and highly-integrated solutions for the Small-Medium Enterprise (SME). OEM and ODM customers that desire low cost, scalable, Gigabit Ethernet switching solutions for the SME and ISP markets now have a range of solutions to choose from."

The key features for VSC737x family include jumbo frame support, link aggregation, flow control, spanning tree, and port-based access control. The VSC737x switches also provide unparalleled QoS features necessary for building cost-effective, Layer 2, managed switch solutions such as programmable multi-layer classification with eight priorities, minimum guaranteed bandwidth allocation, per queue shaping and policing with Committed Info Rate (CIR) and Peak Info Rate (PIR) policies, and Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) remarking.

VSC737x System Development Kit and Third Party Software Support

The VSC737x family includes an extensive suite of software solutions, development tools, and technical support. Vitesse`s software API and SDK solutions are available today and nearly 100% compatible to all other Vitesse Ethernet switches. Vitesse reference designs, coupled with the API and SDK solutions, enable vendors developing their own hardware and software systems to begin design immediately. For customers wanting simpler development, turnkey software solutions are available. The VSC737x family of switches is supported by FASTPATH(R) software from LVL7 Systems, enabling customers to achieve rapid development of finished switching systems.

      Availability and Pricing

The VSC737x Switch SoCs are available in low cost, PBGA (plastic ball grid array) packaging. Budgetary volume pricing for the VSC7376, VSC7374, and VSC7372 is $78, $72, and $48 USD, respectively.
