Manhattan Scientifics erwirbt deutsche Brennstoffzellen-Technologie

HyWeb, 27.08.99: Am 10. August gab Manhattan Scientifics aus Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA, bekannt, das geistige Eigentum, exklusive qeltqeite Vermarktungsrechte und beantragte Patente für die Brennstoffzellen-Technologie im mittleren Leistungsbereich der NovArs Gesellschaft für neue Technologie GmbH mit Sitz in Passau erworben zu haben.

Manhattan Scientifics wird Forschungs- und Entwicklungsaktivitäten von NovArs finanzieren, die am 5. Spetember 1999 beginnen sollen. Dieser Vertrag wurde mit dem Haupteigentümer von NovArs, Dr. Arthur Koschany geschlossen. Der Vertrag beinhaltet die Fertigstellung eines betriebsbereiten Prototypen der nächsten Generation im Frühjahr 2000.

Manhattan Scientifics, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: MHTX) announced today that it has completed initial development and initial testing of the "HYDROCYLE(TM)," a fuel cell powered bicycle. The prototype bicycle utilizes Manhattan Scientifics' unique and proprietary mid-range power technology developed by the company's NovArs unit in Passau, Germany.

Wie Manhattan Scientifics am 24. Es basiert auf einer von der Partnerfirma NovArs GmbH (Passau, Deutschland) entwickelten, fortschrittlichen Technologie, wobei kohlenstofffaserverstärkter Verbundwerkstoff (CFC, carbon fiber composite) als Strukturwerkstoff und eine fortschrittliche Dichtungstechnologie angewandt werden, was Größe und Gewicht minimiert (ca. 4,5 kg).

Die aus CFC gebaute Wasserstoff-Druckspeicherflasche lässt sich in Sekunden austauschen (ähnlich wie die üblichen Flüssiggasflaschen) und wird von Electrolux durch dessen weltweites Vertriebsnetz geliefert.

Manhattan Scientifics hatte 1999 die Rechte an der NovArs-Technologie erworben und finanziert weitere Entwicklungen mit dem Ziel, Größe und Gewicht in den weiteren Prototypen zusätzlich zu reduzieren.

Manhattan Scientifics entwickelt auch ein mit einer Brennstoffzelle angetriebenes Fahrrad zusammen mit der italienischen Aprilia SpA (HyWeb, 19.12.00).

Alternative Energy


MicroFuel Cell -MHTX is providing backing for former Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist Robert Hockaday who is developing a flat printed fuel cell designed to provide an "always on" energy source to power micro-electronics such as cellular telephones and pagers. MHTX owns the worldwide rights to the patented MicroFuel Cell. MHTX's non-stacked fuel cell configuration is ideal for low current, high voltage uses that require outputs below one watt of power. Winner of the coveted Technology of the Year award, discussions are underway with a teaming partner to bring product to market.

Mid-Range Fuel Cell-MHTX owns the global rights to the technology of NovArs GmbH , a German company developing hydrogen powered fuel cells in the 3 to 3,000 watts range. The fuel cells can be used for applications such as scooters; bicycles; industrial vehicles; home back up, portable, and recreational power; laptop computers; cordless power tools; and home appliances. The company completed initial testing of an environmentallyfriendly electric scooter powered by the company's 3000 watt fuel cell. Production models are expected to cover 120 miles with a single fueling at a top speed of at least 35 mph.

The company's Hydrocycle™ is a fuel cell powered concept bicycle which has a range of up to 100 kilometers and a top speed of 30 km/h. MHTX has an agreement with Aprilia, S.p.A., one of Europe's largest manufacturer of scooters and motorcycles, to develop a fuel cell powered concept bicycle. Unveiled at a motor show in Italy in December 2000, it was subsequently named by Time Magazine as an invention of the year 2001.

Computer & Internet Technology


"e-Touch™" - Novint Technologies, Inc. funded by its partner company MHTX, acquired the exclusive global rights to an Internet touch technology enabling anyone to realistically feel images displayed on computer screens. The technology was acquired from Sandia National Laboratories. The Novint unit recently developed sufficient sales revenue to be financially self-reliant as it penetrates the automotive industry with a contract to develop a touchable virtual interior of an automobile, Novint's sixth funded contract. Novint continues to work in the oil and gas exploration industry and on architectural layout and terrain visualization applications. Another area of primary focus is in medical training allowing surgeons torealistically experience medical procedures before touching a living patient.

The Outlook

The company is in discussions with potential partners about building a pilot production line leading to volume manufacturing of its proprietary NovArs fuel cells. The NovArs cell is capable of providing power for personal transportation, portable electronics, power tools, emergency home generators, home and outdoor maintenance appliances, portable defense electronics and portable power systems for home and recreation. Typical power output ranges from two watts to as high as three kilowatts.

Time Magazine named the prototype bicycle designed by Aprilia and powered by a fuel cell produced by the MHTX NovArs unit in Germany as an Invention of the Year 2001. Time said, "Fuel-cell technology, which uses pollution free hydrogen gas to generate an electric current, could ignite electric bike sales. The first prototype, from Italian bike maker Aprilia, stores compressed hydrogen in a 2-liter canister housed in the frame. With a top speed of 20 mph, the bike won't win the Tour de France. But it weighs 20% less than regular electrics and travels twice as far, about 43 miles before it needs more gas. Now that's cool." The article estimates the bike will be available in 2003 for approximately $2,300
