CAT momentan -9 dollar oder -13%. völlig faszinierend wie stabil der DOW sich hält ... noch :D

      Cat on Hot Tin Roof
      October 20, 2006; Page C1

If it hadn't been for the shares of Caterpillar, Dow 12000 would still be a long way away.

Cat's stock has been a major Dow driver the past six years, contributing an additional 500 points to the index level over that period. When Cat, which makes everything from bucket loaders to truck engines, reports today, it should be another blockbuster quarter. Analysts expect it to report a 15% increase in revenues to nearly $10 billion for the three months ended Sept. 30 and a greater-than 40% increase in earnings per share.

But Caterpillar could be driving right into headwinds.

The housing boom pushed national spending on residential construction from $374 billion in 2000 to $672 billion last year, according to the Commerce Department. Behind that, Cat sold an armada of backhoes and bulldozers. With the housing market cooling, spending on residential construction has been falling and could weigh on Cat's sales. Commercial construction takes up some of the slack, but it's only half the size of the residential market.

Orders from trucking customers might also shift into a lower gear next year. New diesel-emission standards from the Environmental Protection Agency mean that, starting in 2007, new trucks will need to be equipped with expensive clean-running engines. In a hurry to order before the rule is in place, truckers and truck makers have been buying equipment and building inventories this year. Next year, after the deadline passes, orders could slow.

A slowing economy might also force trucking companies to downshift. One such hauler, Con-Way, on Tuesday lowered its sales forecast for the rest of 2006, saying its business has been unusually slow for this time of year.

Cat has some insulation from these potential challenges. Nearly half of its sales come from outside North America, and the global economy still seems to be going strong.

What's more, customers in other industries, like mining and oil exploration, show no sign of slowing. But with housing and trucking flashing yellow, the Dow might need a few new pistons driving its own engine.
