Revenues for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2006/2007 grew from $4.3 million to $6.9 million, representing an increase of $2.6 million or 59% growth compared to the previous year's fourth quarter results. Net Earnings for the fourth quarter remained positive at $905,714, representing an increase of over 178% compared to the net earnings of $325,366 posted for the same period last year. Earnings before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortization (EBITDA) also increased from $640,989 to $1,027,115 over the same period.

For the year, the company's revenues increased on a consolidated basis from $13.5 million the previous year to $17.8 million this year, representing an annual growth of approximately 32%. The company recorded net earnings for the full year of $305,010 or $0.01 per common share. EBITDA decreased slightly from $1,336,720 to $1,320,080.

As of January 31, 2007, the company had $3.2 million in cash and short term investments, compared to $3.0 million in the previous year and also had $500,000 in unused credit facilities. By the end of the year, the company had $3.9 million in working capital, down slightly from the $4.0 million reported at the end of the previous year.

Ron Clifton, President and CEO of IDC commented, "I am very pleased to report a strong fourth quarter finish leading to another year of profitability-our third in a row following the high-tech downturn that had such a profound impact on IDC and many other companies in the industry. We had excellent revenue growth with an increase of more than 30% over last year and more than double our revenues of just four years ago. This growth can be attributed to the added business of our new PROFLine subsidiary and the subsequent strengthening of our European business as well as the launch of a number of critical new products and applications last year. Combined with our strong working capital and backlog, these results position us well moving forward."

Highlights of the quarter and the year included:

      - Launching of DVB-S2 products: DVB-S2 is the next-generation open standard that offers increased performance and cost savings enabling cutting-edge applications such as IPTV, HDTV, and digital cinema. In 2006 IDC won important new business and also converted existing customer networks to DVB-S2. The vast majority of product shipped in the second half of the year was DVB-S2 enabled. In addition, IDC was awarded a new R&D project funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) to develop next-generation ultra high-performance DVB-S2 technology.

      - Launching RoHS-compliant products: In 2006, the new Restrictions on Hazardous Substances (RoHS)-with implications for the entire electronics equipment industry-came into effect in Europe. All of IDC's main product lines are now RoHS compliant. This investment in research and development positions IDC well going forward as the rest of the world follows Europe's lead on this important environmental initiative.

      - Major new business and repeat orders: with customers such as the Canadian Forces Radio & Television network's multiyear broadcast services contract (currently entering its eighth year); Westwood One's new IP-based radio network; and Instituto Mexicano de Radio (IMER) the national radio network in Mexico. IDC provided head-end uplink equipment, engineering services, and the first DVB-S2 receivers for SES Americom's IP Prime IPTV service; and for Reuters provided a new DVB-S2 network across Europe as well as another new network across Africa. Access IT-IDC's premiere digital cinema customer-upgraded its network to DVB-S2 and expanded to hundreds of sites across the US. New orders for IDC's Datacast XD Content Management and Distribution system came from SHIN Broadband for a video-on-demand (VOD) consumer set-top-box application in Asia, and for a new digital signage network in Mexico.

      - PROFline: launched new products to meet the RoHS requirements and provide the latest in next-generation audio decoding for professional radio networks - winning new business for next-generation networks with TALPA Radio in the Netherlands, Radio Contact in Belgium and Terracom in Sweden. PROFline also brought in important new business expanding the international broadcast network of a major customer Radio Maria in Italy.

Ron Clifton concluded, "Going forward, we will continue the momentum with the new DVB-S2 line as well as our ongoing products and projects. We plan to maintain our strong R&D focus and broaden the DVB-S2 line to include new low-cost receivers as well as more high-end models that will expand the performance range. I'm confident this strategy will continue to pay off for IDC both in terms of overall growth and increased shareholder value."

      Ottawa Business Journal

International Datacasting Corp. posted a near tripling in fourth-quarter net earnings to $905,714 or two cents per basic share, as revenues jumped from the added business of its new subsidiary and stronger European sales.

Revenues for the Ottawa-based satellite services company grew 59.1 per cent to $6.9 million, while earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) rose to just over $1 million from $640,989 a near earlier. 'I am very pleased to report a strong fourth-quarter finish leading to another year of profitability - our third in a row following the high-tech downturn that had such a profound impact on IDC and many other companies in the industry,' said IDC chief executive Ron Clifton in a statement, pointing to the company's excellent revenue growth.

Revenues have more than doubled from four years ago, Mr. Clifton added. 'This growth can be attributed to the added business of our new PROFLine subsidiary and the subsequent strengthening of our European business, as well as the launch of a number of critical new products and applications last year,' he said. 'Combined with our strong working capital and backlog, these results position us well moving forward.' However, the company's full-year net earnings fell 54.1 per cent to $305 million or one cent per basic share, despite a 31.5-per-cent jump in revenues to $17.8 million. EBITDA also fell slightly to $1.32 million from $1.34 million.

The company recently won a number of significant contracts, especially through its PROFLine business, which launched new products to meet Restrictions on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) standards in Europe.

PROFLine brought in new business for next-generation networks in the Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden, as well as for the expansion of the international broadcast network in Italy.

The company's DVB-S2 satellite line also saw several new orders at home and abroad, including another extension of its multi-year contract with the Canadian Forces Radio & Television network and a new network provision for Reuters across Europe and Africa. 'We plan to maintain our strong research and development focus and broaden the DVB-S2 line to include new low-cost receivers as well as more high-end models that will expand the performance range,' added Mr. Clifton. 'I'm confident this strategy will continue to pay off for IDC both in terms of overall growth and increased shareholder value.'

IDC System Deploys at Westwood One
Radio Network Makes Choice of a New-Generation Satellite Receiver

      by Conrad Trautmann, 5.09.2007
The author is senior vice president of engineering and technology for Westwood One Inc.
The advertisers in our sports products — NFL, NCAA, NHL, golf — wanted the ability to regionalize their commercials by geographical area.
The decision was made back in the summer of 2005 to purchase and install satellite distribution equipment that would allow regionalization of those advertisements or copy — “copy splitting” — in time for the NFL football playoffs at the end of the year and the NCAA men’s basketball tournament in March.

We only needed to deploy in the top 50 markets, which required us to run a mixed system, continuing to operate the legacy Starguide system for all markets 50 and higher. The Starguide II system that Westwood One uses did not have the capability to do the copy splitting.

The timing of this decision gave us only a few months to decide on which system to select, purchase and deploy. Fortunately, we had been talking with all of the satellite vendors in anticipation of finding a replacement system for the Starguide II. When we were faced with the decision and short timeline, much of our research was done.

      Desired features

We began by creating a list of what we expected to see in a new-generation receiver.

Ten years after the design and deployment of the first Starguide receivers, technology has come quite a long way. IP satellite transmission, new and more efficient audio algorithms, affordable high-density storage and broadband Internet are just a few of the things that are available to us that were just a dream 10 to 12 years ago. Those things were definite factors that influenced our design criteria.

Top on the list was to have the latest audio algorithm available and the ability to update the codec we use for transmission as needed.

With the Starguide, the system is locked into MPEG Layer 2 for transmission and only the bit rate is variable. Anything below 96 kbps per mono channel creates a noticeable degradation of the audio. AAC sounds much better at lower bit rates, making the system sound better and more bandwidth efficient. In addition, our tests with Ibiquity’s HDC codec show minimal transcoding effects using AAC.

Next, we needed the ability to send audio files to the receivers and play those files in place of the satellite stream (store and forward). This gives you the ability to do the copy split.

File storage in the form of a hard drive in the receiver to store long-form programs and commercials was a must. We also required an easy interface at the head end in order to manage which receivers stored and played that audio. It is no small feat to keep track of and manage what stations will play what audio. A user-friendly interface to program the copy splits was needed.

In addition, we needed a system that could trigger the splits without our producers of the sporting events having to think about or worry about doing anything.

A connection to a wide-area network and the Internet was a necessity in this age of digital file transfers. This would allow a station to access what was on the receiver’s hard drive via their own audio LAN. An additional feature we considered was allowing stations to trap and play back programs as they wished, similar to how people use a TiVo in their homes.

Monitoring and control of the receiver via a Web interface was needed to ease access to the device for programming or changing channels if it were stored in a rack room or at a tower site. We wanted the Internet connection to allow reporting back to the head end to confirm files were delivered and played successfully.

We envisioned the ability for the receiver to fail over to the Internet for program reception in the event the satellite signal was lost as well. Also, as the Internet quality of service (QoS) continues to improve to carry things like Voice over IP and other streaming applications, our new system needed the capability to transmit over the Internet.

We needed the ability for the receiver to have at least eight relay triggers per channel for station automation, as opposed to the two per channel we have on the Starguide. Most talk shows and station automation systems just need a station ID tone and a local commercial start tone. But for sports distribution, especially baseball, tones for end of game, rain delays and re-joins, more triggers are needed.

We wanted the option of having a receiver that would be able to do six simultaneous streams out at once. The challenge for the design of the new receiver is that all six streams also need to be able to copy split, inserting stored audio off the hard drive on any of those six streams.

A robust RF section in the receiver was necessary and one that would work well in the 2 degree spaced congested skies we’re dealing with now.

With HD Radio gaining ground, another important feature we needed is the ability to transmit program associated data (PAD) to our affiliate stations. PAD contains title and artist information for stations to transmit over their RBDS or HD data streams.

Remote control of the receiver needed to be able to be done by the front panel, through a Web interface and through a serial connection to be driven by an automation system.

      Due diligence

We spoke with Wegener, Comstream, Starguide, X-Digital, ICP and IDC to see what hardware and head-end systems they had to offer, and got an idea of how much it would cost. We also spent a lot of time speaking to existing customers of these companies to get a sense of what had been deployed, how it worked and how well the support was.

Let me say that the companies mentioned have great products and true strengths in what they do. However, we had some very specific needs that needed to be met fast. While all were willing to design and modify their systems, we felt only one had a product that already met our needs; that was International Datacasting Corp.

IDC had already been working with National Public Radio on the design and deployment of a new system for NPRSS. A lot of the design considerations we wanted already were designed into IDC’s latest receiver, called the SuperFlex. The Datacast XD head-end system coupled with the SuperFlex receiver provided us with the features on our wish list.

One big challenge IDC helped us figure out was how to trigger the split copy to play during a live sporting event. Using metadata transmitted through the IP stream of the ENCO DAD32 system we use, IDC wrote an application that uses that metadata to tell the receivers to play the appropriate commercial.

      Head-end installation

The head end consists of two full racks of equipment: audio encoders, multiplexor, IP encapsulator and satellite modem.

In order to make it easy for our existing affiliates to pick up the new carrier, we put up a carrier on the same transponder (15) on the same satellite (AMC-8). To do this, we combined the IDC system into the same uplink system that transmits our Starguide carrier.

      Deployment

The biggest challenge we faced with the deployment of the new receivers was getting them installed and tested at the stations. We sent 75 receivers out to stations in mid-December of that year with hopes that we would be live with all stations for the Super Bowl.

We found that even though stations had installed the new receivers, they were still using the Starguides. Many stations don’t have full-time engineers on-site to do the installations. We had to assign a Westwood One staff member to contact all 75 stations, reach their engineer and stay in close contact with them through the installation process. Our satellite services person would answer installation questions or refer engineers to IDC in the case of more difficult problems, then ultimately run tests to confirm that the receivers worked.

Our system has been on the air now for over a year and has proven to work well and deliver to our expectations. The audio sounds great using the AAC algorithm. IDC just released to us the next generation of the SuperFlex, which has two audio streams out in a single-rack-unit space. We’ll be testing that at selected affiliate stations next.

Important Notice: We speculate on microcap stocks, we do not invest. Speculating on microcaps (penny stocks) is nothing more than educated gambling and you must always be aware that it is extremely high risk. The returns can be tremendous, but never speculate with more than you can afford to lose as they are often subject to extreme volatility. We are not investment advisors but are here to provide insight into various aspects of the market and research into microcap stocks we feel offer strong growth potential over a 12 to 18 month period.

International Datacasting (TSX: T.IDC; 38 cents)

      Shares Outstanding: 44 million
Revenue for Quarter Ending 01/31/07: $6.9 million (EBITDA $1 million)
Revenue for Year Ending 01/31/07: $17.8 million
      Good working capital, Minimal debt

      Valuation potential

This is a small, fully-listed TSX tech company that has been in business since 1984, has a clean balance sheet, is showing strong revenue growth, and is profitable, which should be worth one to two times annual sales. The past year-end showed revenue of $17.8 million but Q4 was very strong at $6.9 million. If International Datacasting (TSX: T.IDC, BullBoards) can even sustain $25 million annually during the next 12 to 18 months, this puts a value of 57 cents a share at one times annual sales. At two times, it's closer to $1.10. Even splitting the difference provides a nice valuation objective. All this, however, depends upon its ability to continue growing the business. If it does even better, this is where micro-caps can really pay off. Regardless, you need to read the next section as it's one of our primary risks and the reason we're cautious in this current price range short term. Fortunately, the mid and high 30-cent range is providing excellent liquidity.

      The warning

We have tried numerous times to contact the CEO of this company and emailed three separate people asking for someone to contact me to discuss the firm. No one has had the courtesy of even an email. This attitude likely explains why the company has been stuck in the 20-cent range for the past two years. If it wasn't experiencing such strong revenue growth, profitability, and strong industry potential, we wouldn't waste our time. However, if its revenue growth trend continues, there could be real potential here - so long as a person can ignore its lack of "investor relations common sense."

Some micro-caps appear clueless when it comes to attracting new investment or supporting existing shareholders. They believe the market will magically recognize their "business expertise" over time and knock down their door to purchase stock. Rarely does this happen unless the stock is dramatically under the radar, fundamentally undervalued, and has strong growth potential. If you catch these cheap enough and tuck them away, in time, some type of catalyst will move the valuation dramatically higher - usually this involves a news release that catches media attention or financials that the market suddenly recognizes. If this doesn't occur, it can mean tying up dead money.

We believe the stock is currently undervalued (even in light of this) and has strong growth potential, so we're overlooking this investor relations shortcoming for the time being. Just remember it's an important risk factor. Volume for the past two years has been very low but following release of financials last month, it has picked up significantly.

About IDC and importance of DVB-S2

IDC is in a niche industry providing products, services, and systems for distributing multimedia content across broadband satellite. Markets for its technology include the emerging IPTV, HDTV & digital cinema, streaming media, interactive distance learning, radio broadcasting networks, syndicated TV content distribution, digital signage, financial news and weather distribution, and emergency response.

The company has been a satellite technology leader and innovator for years and is recently one of the first to market with a new technology called DVB-S2. This has resulted in a 30% improvement in bandwidth carried across a satellite signal. Digital cinema, for example, can deliver in one to 1.5 hours, compared with four or five previously. The speed improvement translates into huge cost savings, efficiencies, and signal quality. This also dramatically expands the applications for IPTV and HDTV. The new S2 technology being pushed as the global industry standard could result in significant growth for IDC going forward - one of the specific reasons for speculating at this stage.

IDC was recently awarded a new research and development project financed by the European Space Agency (ESA) to develop next-generation, ultrahigh- performance DVB-S2 technology.

They are also encountering demand from long-time customers upgrading their networks to take advantage of the cost savings and high-performance of DVB-S2, including a major UK-based agency for its global financial news service. IDC was selected to provide its next generation of DVB-S/S2 satellite router/receivers for the expansion of a secure financial information network in Europe.

SES Americom, one of the largest satellite operators in the world, is using IDC's DVB-S2 receivers exclusively for its new IPTV service IP Prime. IP Prime enables telcos to offer "triple play" to its customers by adding television to its normal service offering of telephony and Internet connectivity - and satellite delivery is reliable, secure and has the lowest possible operating cost for this application. Access IT, another leader in the industry, is rolling out digital cinema service across the U.S. using IDC's DVB-S2 receivers. AccessIT expects to achieve an installed base of several thousand digital cinema systems by year end and, overall, the industry expects to see 7000 digital cinemas worldwide within the year.

Satellite has finally come of age with digital cinema, we're seeing pent up demand for HDTV, and IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is likely the next technology we should see emerging. It has been talked about for years, but the technology and cost efficiencies just haven't been there. The new DVB-S2 could start to change that.

Internet TV, or Internet Protocol TV, would integrate television with high-speed Internet and telephone services, somewhat similar to the "bundle" services now offered by cable companies. The big difference would be that IPTV would mesh those services with each other, so viewers could watch television on their desktop computer or cellular phone, or have caller identification on their television. It would also give televisions Internet-like capabilities.

IPTV's biggest markets are in East Asia, especially in Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea. Small companies have driven the early development of IPTV in the United States, but now the big telecommunications firms are seriously looking at it. Satellite in massive regions like India and China could be particularly lucrative.
      Market opportunities and growth potential
There is significant growing demand for Broadband Satellite and government sponsored education projects in regions such as Mexico, Thailand, Columbia, Brazil, Russia, Turkey, Malaysia, and Argentina.

Australia, for example, was an important satellite broadband market in the last year. While smaller in scope, the Australian Broadband Connect access subsidy program was an excellent example of a government initiative to bring broadband services to rural areas at a price on par with services in urban parts of the country. IDC has demonstrated on a global scale its ability to serve rural and geographically isolated regions.

There is a lot of opportunity here for growth and the technology (in particular with DVB-S2) could really start to come of age.

Enterprise Networks - this includes large organizations with multiple remote locates, government agencies and other organizations requiring their own private broadband wireless IP network, typically for security or access reasons.

Distance Learning - schools, universities, corporations, government agencies and other organizations that wish to provide education and training via a broadband wireless network. IDC clients already include the Mexican government's K-12 program, the Virtual University of ITESM across Latin America and universities in China.

Internet Infrastructure - this includes Internet Service Providers (ISPs), Application Service Providers (ASPs) and distributors of broadband content via wireless networks to business and residential users.

Multimedia Content Distribution - includes broadcasters, government agencies and other organizations that wish to provide broadband multimedia content (video, audio and-or data).

      Further due diligence

There is little point repeating and re-typing information that is already well summarized on their Web sites. These not only explain what they do, but who their large clients are and what the market potential is like. The International Datacasting site explains the satellite side of the business, while Profline explains why that division is one of the leading audio and data distribution providers across Europe.

Thursday June 7, 5:01 pm ET

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(MARKET WIRE)--Jun 7, 2007 -- International Datacasting Corporation, (Toronto:IDC.TO - News) announced its unaudited financial results for the first quarter of fiscal 2007/08.

The results in CDN$ are as follows:

      Three months ending April 30, 2007 April 30, 2006

      Revenue $5,767,942 $3,276,068

      EBITDA $419,005 $(226,482)

      Net Earnings $55,546 $(457,405)

      Basic Earnings
      per share $0.00 ($0.01)

Revenues for the first quarter grew from $3.3 million to $5.8 million representing an increase of $2.5 million or 76% growth compared to the same period last year. Net earnings for the first quarter were positive at $55,546, representing an increase of $512,951 over last year. Earnings before Interest, Tax, Depreciation and Amortization (EBITDA) also increased from $(226,482) to $419,005. As of April 30, 2007, the company had $2.6 million in cash compared to $3.2 million in the previous quarter and also had $500,000 in unused credit facilities and working capital of $4,085,614.

"I am pleased to report a strong first quarter in terms of growth and profitability and a significant improvement over the same period last year. Our cash and working capital position remains strong. Our continued investment in new product development as well as marketing and sales is building momentum that is positioning us well for the future," said Ron Clifton, President and CEO of IDC.

"In addition to our financial results, we also launched a number of new products in the first quarter, which we featured at the most important multimedia and broadcast industry event of the year, the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Annual Conference that was held in Las Vegas in April. The strong interest that our new IPTV SFX Pro Video products generated at NAB, in particular, has us very excited," Mr. Clifton added.

Highlights from the quarter include the release of the following major new products at the National Association of Broadcasters Annual Convention in Las Vegas in April:

      - The new SFX Pro Video is an Integrated Receiver Decoder (IRD) that features real time hardware decoding of MPEG-4 AVC Standard Definition (SD) and High Definition (HD) television while also offering MPEG 1 and 2 decoding for ease of converting from legacy networks.

This product also offers a built-in hard drive for local content insertion, has a variety of professional video outputs including HD-SDI and offers a choice of DVB-S or S2 satellite inputs as well as IP and industry standard ASI.

      - Push VOD IPTV: This is the latest addition to the IDC suite of IPTV offerings. This solution embeds Datacast XD into a consumer grade set top box complete with a built-in hard drive for program storage and hardware decoding of SD and HD video. Datacast XD provides guaranteed content delivery along with decryption, digital rights management and Video on Demand (VOD) playout control. It is available with standard Ethernet input as well as DVB-S/S2 satellite or ATSC inputs.

      - The SFX 2102/3102 receiver is an expansion of our DVB-S/S2 product line introduced last year. These new models offer Variable Code Modulation (VCM) giving networks the ability to offer multiple channels over a single channel while allowing operators to change modulation and forward error correction dynamically for each transport stream. This breakthrough greatly improves network efficiency and significantly reduces operating costs. In addition these models offer expanded operation from 100 ks/s to 45 Ms/s and add 16APSK modulation for higher data throughput, of particular interest for IPTV networks. The SFX 3102 versions of the receiver can output up to 190 Mb/sec.

      - IDC's lowest-cost edge receiver, the SR2001Plus, has been upgraded to support both DVB-S and DVB-S2 operation. It also includes built-in decryption as well as IDC's proven in-band network management.

Some major customer highlights for the quarter include:

      - SES Americom continued to expand their new IP Prime IPTV service in the USA resulting in new orders for our SFX3101 DVB-S/S2 receivers as well as additional head end equipment. The IDC solution was featured at the SES booth at NAB as part of a live demonstration of the service.

      - AccessIT placed new orders for additional satellite receivers needed to expand its Digital Cinema network in the USA. This network, being deployed using IDC receivers operating in DVB-S2 mode and in conjunction with Christie projectors, is enabling the delivery of full-length feature movies, advertisements and alternative content including live programming to its install base.

      - IDC's PROFline subsidiary in Europe won a contract for a major new radio broadcast network in Spain. This contract calls for a complete end-to-end satellite network solution using the latest PROFline technology to deliver high quality digital audio programming across their coverage area.

      - IDC also received a number of add-on orders to expand the data distribution networks of Reuters in Europe as well as NPR in the US. Metodista University in Brazil also expanded their distance learning network installed last year. In addition, long-standing customer Hearst-Argyle upgraded their network to IDC's latest DVB-S2 technology to be used to distribute syndicated television programming to their stations throughout the United States.

"Overall this was a good quarter. I would like to thank our excellent team of employees, our shareholders and our valued customers for their continued support," concluded Mr. Clifton.
