Companies featured in this edition of the newsletter: ACTC, CBAI, CICS, CVM, DKAM, ICLK, IMUC, ITUI, PHC

Markets finished mixed this week, as early sell offs on Monday and Tuesday were recouped later in the week following some notable earnings releases and some conflicting news on the economic front highlighted by the Fed's rate decision on Wednesday. All told, the Dow ended down 1.2% on the week, losing 101 points to close at 8438, bringing its YTD losses to 3.9%. The Nasdaq gained 0.6% to close at 1827, up 16.6 on the year, while the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 finished down 0.3% and up 0.1% respectively, bringing their yearly gains to 1.7% and 2.8%.

The week got off to a bearish start, as the S&P 500 fell 3.1% on Monday following the announcement that the World Bank had cut its worldwide GDP forecast. Energy and financials were the main laggards on the week, posting losses of 2.3% and 1.1% respectively, while telecom and healthcare led the way back from Monday's sell off, finishing up 3.7% and 1.4%. Earnings releases on the week provided no definitive guidance to investors, as Oracle (NASDAQ: ORCL) managed to beat estimates while raising guidance for the coming quarter, but Walgreen (NYSE: WAG) and Nike (NYSE: NKE) both declined following disappointing results.

Economic news was again mixed for the week, with new home sales coming in below consensus, down 0.6% versus an expected increase of 2.3%, while existing home sales posted an increase of 2.4% from April, slightly below consensus estimates of 2.4%. Initial jobless claims were worse than expected while continuing claims also managed to disappoint. GDP showed a 5.5% annualized decline which was slightly better than the expected 5.7% drop. The FOMC left benchmark rates unchanged noting a slowdown in the economic contraction, but also stated that economic conditions are likely to warrant continued low levels of the federal funds rate for an extended period of time.

What should investors look for this week? It will be an abbreviated trading week with markets closed on Friday in observance of Fourth of July, but the slew of labor market data due out on Thursday morning should garner attention from investors who have not gotten an early start to their holiday. While unemployment figures are a lagging indicator of economic recovery, it is expected that investors will focus on them, as signs of improvement will undoubtedly be interpreted as an indication of pending economic recovery.

Noteworthy earnings reports will be few and far between this week, but look for results from General Mills (NYSE: GIS) before the bell on Wednesday.

Economic releases for the week begin on Tuesday with Consumer Confidence figures for June and the S&P Case Shiller Home Price Index for April released in tandem at 9:00am followed by Chicago PMI for June at 9:45 a.m. On Wednesday, look for ADP Employment Change figures for June, ISM Index for May and Pending Home Sales, also for May, released together at 10:00am followed by weekly crude inventories at 10:30am and Truck and Auto Sales at 2:00pm. The week wraps up on Thursday with Nonfarm Payrolls, the Unemployment Rate, Hourly Earnings and Average Workweek, all for June, along with weekly initial jobless claims all released together at 8:30am, with Factory Orders for May due out at 10:00am.

There are no conferences of note scheduled due to the holiday shortened week.

CEL-SCI Corporation (AMEX: CVM), a company engaged in research and development of drugs and vaccines, announced last week that it has entered into a definitive agreement with an institutional investor that will generate proceeds of approximately $5 million for CVM. Under the terms of the agreement, CEL-SCI has agreed to sell 12.5 million units, with each unit consisting of one of the company's common shares and 0.67 warrants to purchase one share of common stock; the investor has agreed to purchase the units at a purchase price of $0.40 per unit. The warrants, which represent the right to acquire an aggregate of up to 8.375 million common shares, will be exercisable at any time on or after 181 days from the closing date and prior to the 5-year anniversary at an exercise price of $0.50 per share. The transaction is anticipated to close on or about June 29, 2009. Proceeds from the sale are expected to be put towards acceleration of CVM's H1N1 swine flu work, the validation of the company's manufacturing facility for contract manufacturing services, and to produce cancer drug Multikine for the planned Phase III clinical trial. In other news last week, CVM announced that it has filed a provisional U.S. patent application covering its L.E.A.P.S. immune vaccines for the prevention/treatment of H1N1, swine, bird flu, Influenza A and evolving mutants or variants of these viruses. The provisional patent allows the company to preserve its rights to file patents on these inventions and for their use world-wide either as an injected vaccine before a person is infected or as a therapeutic vaccine for treatment. Shares lost ten cents on the week to close just above $0.40.

Volume Alert: Shares of Pioneer Behavioral Health (AMEX: PHC), a leading provider of inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services, gained 13% on more than twice average volume last week, perhaps in anticipation that the company could receive CMS certification for their Seven Hills Behavioral facility in Nevada. PHC previously said that it believed it was "close" to receiving certification. Shares gained fifteen cents on the week to close at $1.30.

interCLICK (OTCBB: ICLK) the fastest growing advertising network in the US according to comScore, announced last week that it has completed a private placement, raising a total of $2.5 million. ICLK sold 2.5 million shares of its common stock and five-year warrants to purchase 625,000 shares of common stock at an exercise price of $1.40 per share to existing shareholders, with proceeds from the financing to be used for working capital in the form of increased investments in sales, marketing, and technology which the company expects will promote continued strong growth. ICLK also recently raised its 2009 revenue forecast for the second time this year in response to strong advertiser demand for high ROI solutions, as the company now expects '09 full year revenue of over $40 million, up from its previous guidance of $36 million, marking an increase of over 80% from the previous year's $22.4 million. Shares gained five cents on the week to close at $1.20.

Volume Alert: Shares of stem cell company Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. (OTC: ACTC) soared to a new 52-week high on three times average volume, as the stock continues its month-long surge which has seen shares gain 67% this month on heavy volume. Since the beginning of the year, the stock has jumped more than 700%, far outpacing other stem cell companies. Shares may have rallied due to a recent announcement that the company and its collaborators presented favorable data on its platform technology's ability to treat diseases of the eye, or news that the company is bringing its financial information up to date in order to relist on the Bulletin Board. Shares ended the week at $0.25, up 5 cents.

ImmunoCellular Therapeutics (OTCBB: IMUC), a clinical-stage company that is developing immune based therapies for the treatment of brain and other cancers, has signed an agreement with Formatech, Inc. for the manufacture of IMUC's lead product candidate, ICT-121, a cancer stem cell vaccine that has the potential to treat several different types of cancers. Formatech will manufacture ICT-121 for the upcoming Phase I clinical trial of ICT-121 which will target glioblastoma, a highly lethal form of brain cancer, and is expected to begin early next year pending clearance by the FDA. ICT-121 has shown ability in preclinical studies to target and destroy cancer stem cells present in brain tumors; the company has high hopes for its potential to someday offer patients a safer and more effective treatment alternative than the current standard of care. Shares gained three cents on the week to close at $0.43.

Drinks Americas Holdings (OTCBB: DKAM), a company that develops, owns, markets, and nationally distributes alcoholic and non-alcoholic premium beverages associated with renowned iconic celebrities, announced last week that it has completed a private placement resulting in the immediate funding of $375,000 in cash for the company with deferred advances aggregating $2,625,000. The debt was structured as a $4 million non-interest bearing debenture with a 25% original issue discount, which, if it reaches maturity, equates to an effective annual interest rate of approximately 8% per annum according to the company. In addition, DKAM issued warrants to purchase 2.5 million shares of the company's common stock at an exercise price of $0.35 per share. The transaction will provide DKAM with an immediate and near term cash infusion which will enhance cash flow and enable expansion of their growing product offerings, including the impending release of their Kid Rock branded beer. This successful financing should serve as a key strategic catalyst for DKAM as the difficult capital market environment over the past year has significantly inhibited the company's ability to distribute their award winning line of premium spirits. With the impending launch of their Kid Rock American Badass branded beer -which is projected to be an overwhelming success in middle America- and this latest successful capital raise, DKAM could be in position to grow revenue. Shares lost a penny on the week to close at $0.14.

Cord Blood America, Inc. (OTCBB: CBAI), an umbilical cord blood stem cell preservation company focused on bringing the life saving potential of stem cells to families nationwide and internationally, announced last week that it has signed a marketing agreement that will expand its services into Panama, Bermuda and Aruba. This latest expansion follows news earlier this month that CBAI has expanded its sales operations into the European Union. The company plans to target its marketing efforts towards hospitals and obstetricians/gynecologists in those areas, where the life saving potential of their cord blood storage technology will be most fully appreciated. Cord Blood will be the first to offer stem cell storage services in Aruba and Bermuda and the second to offer them in Panama. CBAI has chosen high income markets for its expansion; Bermuda had the world's highest per capita GDP until recently, while Aruba is also extremely affluent and Panama has become an international business center in Central America with a rapidly growing economy and the highest per capita consumer spending in the region. The company expects that its expansion efforts into these well to do markets will encourage higher sales as parents who have the means to provide for their children's future well being will take advantage of the unique opportunity afforded them by CBAI's storage technology. Shares remained unchanged at less than a penny on the week.

Carbonics Capital Corporation (OTCBB: CICS), a company that provides applied engineering and technology transfer services based on clean technology and process innovations that enhance manufacturing efficiencies, improve resource utilization and minimize waste, has appointed Paul T. Miller, Ph.D. to the position of president and chief executive officer. Dr. Miller was the founder and president of Sustainable Systems, an oilseed processing facility specializing in the production of high oleic vegetable oils for food applications, and has extensive hands on experience in understanding the challenges faced by early stage development projects and companies including diverse experience in finance, sales, marketing, product development and operations. CICS plans to focus on technological development and services that decarbonize and increase efficiency within industry and commerce. Carbonics' first project involves its planned acquisition of the Sustainable Systems oilseed crush facility in Culbertson, Montana from GreenShift Corporation (OTCBB: GERS), and the restructuring and repositioning of this facility as a strategic location for the processing of carbon-neutral second generation feedstocks for biofuel applications. Shares remained unchanged at less than a penny on the week.

ich geb dir Recht kurzfristig sind um die 50cent drin.

mehrere usd erst wenn hier wirklich Geld generiert wird. Bis es soweit ist, muss aber erst noch ein wenig Zeit vergehen. In jedem Fall ein Zukunftsthema. Gern kommt heute schon ein wenig in die Puschen.

An die Versenkung glaube ich bei ACTC nicht mehr - erst Recht nicht, nachdem gerdass bald den ganzen Float hält... ;-)

Auch für actc werden weitere Allianzen kommen oder eine Beteiligung eines großen
oder ein buy-out oder wasweißich über kurz oder mittel- bis langfristig.

Man sollte hier wirklich nicht allzu viel falsch machen können, wenn man weiter hält.

Würde bei Schwäche auch einen Nachkauf wagen, da ich actc bereits stark übergewichtet habe.

Also sollte sich hier noch ein bisserl Geduld auszahlen.

Was soll man sagen, hält sich in einer neuen trading-range um die .24 zur Zeit ganz gut.

Neue Basis oder geht es noch mal runter.

Viele scheinen ja noch diesen Monat auf ein filling wg. otc-wechsel spekuliert zu haben.

Wenn dieses Datum fruchtlos verstreicht, mag es noch ein paar Verkäufe von tradern geben.

und verstreichen tut es heute

als alter Chartanalyst gestern eher ein Weh, statt ein W. Superaktie zum traden. Ich warte mal wieder, bis wir wieder unter 1 sind, dann Kurzblöcke kaufen und bei 2,5 abstoßen. Bislang hats gut funktioniert, aber irgendwann kommt sie dann nicht mehr hoch, und da zeichnet sich der Experte aus. Also: die Luft wird wieder dünner.

Aktien steigen und fallen

ich bin hier zum größten Teil im Cent-Bereich eingestiegen

und werde Steuerfrei hier irgendwann aussteigen

pagitz, lasst euch nicht blenden. Er passt seinen Einstiegskurs stets der performance an. Das kannst du aus über 100 seiner threads hier leicht erkennen.

Mein Anliegen ist/war, hier jeden zu warnen, denn woanders ist es nicht anders. Es wird noch gepuscht, wenn chapter 11 eingereicht wird.

Zumindest DJ dürfte wieder drin sein,

Hab 10 K nachgenommen,
zuvor allerdings aus der trading-posi auch paar verkauft.

Im nachhinein hätte man alle verkaufen können zu .19 - .20 EUR
und jetzt wieder gut rein.

Sind ja jetzt auch wieder größere Posi in Dt. gehandelt worden.

Aber erstens ist man hinterher immer schlauer und zweitens hatte ich damit gerechnet, dass wir die .30 USD im letzten hype schaffen würden,
dann beim nexten mal.

Ich habe schon verschiedene Orders zum Kauf oder Verkauf in meinen riskantesten Werten ausgelegt. Von ACTC verspreche ich mir jetzt sehr viel.
Außerdem habe ich mein I-Phon mit, da kann ich mal in die Boards schauen. Also zieht nicht zu sehr über mich her ich lese heimlich mit. Schönes Wochenende bald habt Ihr ja auch Urlaub.

Bin nicht wie die meisten Börsianer auf Aruba bzw. in den teuersten Hotels >>> nein ich bin für 2 Wochen in einer gemütlichen Ferienwohnung in Schenna in Südtirol zu Gast. Wegen meiner Kinder jedoch mit schönem Pool.

WASHINGTON, July 6 (Reuters) - The U.S. government released new rules on Monday governing federally funded research on human embryonic stem cells, loosening some ethical requirements that scientists said could have cost them a decade of work.

The rules, which take effect on Tuesday, keep many existing restrictions on the research. U.S. federal funds may still not be used to actually make the cells using human embryos -- only to work with the cells after someone else has made them.

But the National Institutes of Health, which issued the rules, eased some of the measures in the initial guidelines drawn up in March, including the so-called "informed consent" requirements meant to ensure that people who donated embryos for research knew exactly what they might be used for.

"We allow a case-by-case review," acting NIH director Dr. Raynard Kington told reporters in a telephone briefing.

In March, President Barack Obama lifted restrictions on human embryonic stem cell research that had been put in place by his predecessor, former president George W. Bush and asked the NIH to draw up new guidelines.

Stem cell company stocks did not move much on news of the new rules, in part because the changes mostly affect academic researchers who rely heavily on federal funding for their work.

The NIH guidelines take into account many of the arguments put forward during nearly 10 years of debate over how best to use the potential of human embryonic stem cells, which have the power to give rise to all the cells and tissues in the body and which supporters hope can transform medicine.

Opponents say it is wrong to destroy human embryos for any reason.

Over the years Congress reached a middle ground, with many social conservatives, such as Utah Republican Senator Orrin Hatch, supporting such research if it used embryos left over at fertility clinics.

"The guidelines reflect the broad public support for federal funding of research using human embryonic stem cells created from such embryos based on wide and diverse debate on the topic in Congress and elsewhere," the new rules say.

They limit such research to these in vitro fertilization or IVF leftovers but also loosen restrictions on using human embryonic stem cells made in other countries.

In April when the initial guidelines were published some scientists said the "informed consent" rules on educating embryo donors were so strict that they might force labs to discard valuable stem cell batches, called lines.

"The draft guidelines that were released were so restrictive that I feared the vast majority of lines would be excluded," Dr. George Daley of Harvard University in Massachusetts said in a telephone interview. He said the revised rules answer his concerns.

"It is the most that the administration can offer under current law," said Dr. John Gearhart, a stem cell expert at the University of Pennsylvania. "There are many 'new' cell lines that have exceptional properties and have been maintained under better conditions that will meet the criteria of use."

The rules create in effect the first official federal oversight of human embryonic stem cell research, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine said.

Opponents of the research did not immediately respond to requests for comment but the National Right-To-Life-Committee said in April it feared the regulations were only a first step to loosening restrictions on the research. (Editing by David Storey)

Executive Level Overview

We are a biotechnology company focused on developing and commercializing human stem cell technology in the emerging fields of regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy.

Critical Accounting Estimates

The Company's discussion and analysis of its financial condition and results of operations are based upon the Company's consolidated financial statements, which have been prepared in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America. The preparation of these financial statements requires the Company to make certain estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities, disclosure of any contingent assets and liabilities at the date of the financial statements and the reported amounts of revenues and expenses during the reporting periods. The Company regularly reviews its estimates and assumptions, which are based upon historical experience, as well as current economic conditions and various other factors that are believed to be reasonable under the circumstances, the results of which form the basis for making judgments about the carrying values of certain assets and liabilities that are not readily apparent from other sources. Actual results may differ from these estimates and assumptions.

The Company believes that the following critical accounting policies are affected by significant judgments and estimates used in the preparation of its consolidated financial statements.

Fair Value Measurements - For certain financial instruments, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, accrued expenses, interest payable, advances payable and notes payable, the carrying amounts approximate fair value due to their relatively short maturities.

Emerging Issues Task Force ("EITF") No. 00-19 "Accounting for Derivative Financial Instruments Indexed to and Potentially Settled in, a Company's Own Stock" ("EITF 00-19"), provides a criteria for determining whether freestanding contracts that are settled in a company's own stock, including common stock options and warrants, should be designated as either an equity instrument, an asset or as a liability under FAS No. 133 "Accounting for Derivative Instruments and Hedging Activities." Under the provisions of EITF 00-19, a contract designated as an asset or a liability must be carried at fair value on a company's balance sheet, with any changes in fair value recorded in a company's results of operations. Using the criteria in EITF 00-19, the Company has determined that its outstanding options and warrants require liability accounting and records the fair values as warrant and option derivatives.

On January 1, 2008, the Company adopted FAS No. 157, "Fair Value Measurements" ("FAS 157"). FAS 157 defines fair value and establishes a three-level valuation hierarchy for disclosures of fair value measurement that enhances disclosure requirements for fair value measures. The carrying amounts reported in the consolidated balance sheets for receivables and current liabilities each qualify as financial instruments and are a reasonable estimate of their fair values because of the short period of time between the origination of such instruments and their expected realization and their current market rate of interest. The three levels of valuation hierarchy are defined as follows:

� Level 1 inputs to the valuation methodology are quoted prices for identical assets or liabilities in active markets.

� Level 2 inputs to the valuation methodology include quoted prices for similar assets and liabilities in active markets, and inputs that are observable for the asset or liability, either directly or indirectly, for substantially the full term of the financial instrument.

� Level 3 inputs to the valuation methodology are unobservable and significant to the fair value measurement.

FAS 133, "Accounting for Derivative Instruments and Hedging Activities" requires bifurcation of embedded derivative instruments and measurement of fair value for accounting purposes. In addition, FAS 155, "Accounting for Certain Hybrid Financial Instruments" requires measurement of fair values of hybrid financial instruments for accounting purposes. We applied the accounting prescribed in FAS 133 to account for our 2005 Convertible Debenture. For practicality in the valuation of the debentures and for ease of presentation, we applied the accounting prescribed in FAS 155 to account for the 2006, 2007, February 2008, and April 2008 Convertible Debentures.

In determining the appropriate fair value of the debentures, we used Level 2 inputs for our valuation methodology. For the periods from January 1, 2007 through September 30, 2008, we applied the Black-Scholes models, Binomial Option Pricing models, Standard Put Option Binomial models and the net present value of certain penalty amounts to value the debentures and their embedded derivatives. At December 31, 2008, to achieve greater cost efficiencies, we changed our application of the Income Approach as defined under paragraph 18 of FAS 157, by applying the Black-Scholes option pricing model in valuing all debentures and their embedded derivatives. This change did not materially impact the results of the Company's valuations of its debentures and embedded derivatives. The impact of the change in the application of the Income Approach was approximately 1.4% of the fair value of the Company's debentures and their embedded derivatives. FAS 157, paragraph 20 states that the disclosure provisions of Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 154 Accounting Changes and Error Corrections ("FAS 154") for a change in accounting estimate are not required for revisions resulting from a change in a valuation technique or its application.

Derivative liabilities are adjusted to reflect fair value at each period end, with any increase or decrease in the fair value being recorded in results of operations as Adjustments to Fair Value of Derivatives. The effects of interactions between embedded derivatives are calculated and accounted for in arriving at the overall fair value of the financial instruments. In addition, the fair values of freestanding derivative instruments such as warrant and option derivatives are valued using the Black-Scholes model.

Revenue Recognition- Our revenues are generated from license and research agreements with collaborators. Licensing revenue is recognized on a straight-line basis over the shorter of the life of the license or the estimated economic life of the patents related to the license. License fee revenue begins to be recognized in the first full month following the effective date of the license agreement. Deferred revenue represents the portion of the license and other payments received that has not been earned. Costs associated with the license revenue are deferred and recognized over the same term as the revenue. Reimbursements of research expense pursuant to grants are recorded in the period during which collection of the reimbursement becomes assured, because the reimbursements are subject to approval.

Stock Based Compensation- Effective January 1, 2006, we adopted the fair value recognition provisions of FAS 123(R), using the modified-prospective transition method. Under this method, stock-based compensation expense is recognized in the consolidated financial statements for stock options granted, modified or settled after the adoption date. In accordance with FAS 123(R), the unamortized portion of options granted prior to the adoption date is recognized into earnings after adoption. Results for prior periods have not been restated, as provided for under the modified-prospective method.

Under FAS 123(R), stock-based compensation expense recognized is based on the value of the portion of share-based payment awards that are ultimately expected to vest during the period. Based on this, our stock-based compensation is reduced for estimated forfeitures at the time of grant and revised, if necessary, in subsequent periods if actual forfeitures differ from those estimates.

Recent Accounting Pronouncements

In September 2006, the FASB issued FAS 157 "Fair Value Measurements." This Statement defines fair value, establishes a framework for measuring fair value in generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and expands disclosures about fair value measurements. This Statement applies under other accounting pronouncements that require or permit fair value measurements, the Board having previously concluded in those accounting pronouncements that fair value is the relevant measurement attribute. Accordingly, this Statement does not require any new fair value measurements. However, for some entities, the application of this Statement will change current practice. This Statement is effective for financial statements issued for fiscal years beginning after November 15, 2007, and interim periods within those fiscal years. Earlier application is encouraged, provided that the reporting entity has not yet issued financial statements for that fiscal year, including financial statements for an interim period within that fiscal year. We have adopted FAS 157 beginning January 1, 2008 and do not believe the adoption had a material impact on our financial position, results of operations or cash flows.

In December 2007, the FASB issued SFAS No. 141 (Revised 2007), "Business Combinations." FAS No. 141 (Revised 2007) changes how a reporting enterprise accounts for the acquisition of a business. FAS No. 141 (Revised 2007) requires an acquiring entity to recognize all the assets acquired and liabilities assumed in a transaction at the acquisition-date fair value, with limited exceptions, and applies to a wider range of transactions or events. FAS No. 141 (Revised 2007) is effective for fiscal years beginning on or after December 15, 2008 and early adoption and retrospective application is prohibited. We believe adopting FAS No. 141R will significantly impact our financial statements for any business combination completed after December 31, 2008.

In February 2007, the FASB issued FAS No. 159, "The Fair Value Option for Financial Assets and Financial Liabilities". This Statement permits entities to choose to measure many financial assets and financial liabilities at fair value. Unrealized gains and losses on items for which the fair value option has been elected are reported in earnings. FAS No. 159 is effective as of the beginning of an entity's first fiscal year that begins after November 15, 2007. The Company adopted FAS No. 159 on January 1, 2008. We chose not to elect the option to measure the fair value of eligible financial assets and liabilities.

In June 2007, the FASB issued FASB Staff Position No. EITF 07-3, "Accounting for Nonrefundable Advance Payments for Goods or Services Received for use in Future Research and Development Activities" ("FSP EITF 07-3"), which addresses whether nonrefundable advance payments for goods or services that used or rendered for research and development activities should be expensed when the advance payment is made or when the research and development activity has been performed. Management is currently evaluating the effect of this pronouncement on financial statements.

In December 2007, the FASB issued SFAS No. 160, "Noncontrolling Interests in Consolidated Financial Statements - An Amendment of ARB No. 51" ("SFAS 160"). SFAS 160 amends ARB 51 to establish accounting and reporting standards for the noncontrolling interest in a subsidiary and for the deconsolidation of a subsidiary. It is intended to eliminate the diversity in practice regarding the accounting for transactions between equity and noncontrolling interests by requiring that they be treated as equity transactions. Further, it requires consolidated net income to be reported at amounts that include the amounts attributable to both the parent and the noncontrolling interest. SFAS 160 also establishes a single method of accounting for changes in a parent's ownership interest in a subsidiary that do not result in deconsolidation, requires that a parent recognize a gain or loss in net income when a subsidiary is deconsolidated, requires expanded disclosures in the consolidated financial statements that clearly identify and distinguish between the interests of the parent's owners and the interests of the noncontrolling owners of a subsidiary, among others. SFAS 160 is effective for fiscal years beginning on or after December 15, 2008, with early adoption permitted, and it is to be applied prospectively. SFAS 160 is to be applied prospectively as of the beginning of the fiscal year in which it is initially applied, except for the presentation and disclosure requirements, which must be applied retrospectively for all periods presented. The adoption of SFAS 160 will not have an impact on our consolidated financial statements.

In February 2008, the FASB issued FASB Staff Position No. 157-1 ("FSP 157-1"), "Application of FASB Statement No. 157 to FASB Statement No. 13 and Other Accounting Pronouncements That Address Fair Value Measurements for Purposes of Lease Classification or Measurement under Statement 13." FSP 157-1 is effective upon initial adoption of SFAS 157, and indicates that it does not apply under SFAS 13, "Accounting for Leases" and other accounting pronouncements that address fair value measurements for purposes of lease classification or measurement under SFAS 13. This scope exception does not apply to assets acquired and liabilities assumed in a business combination that are required to be measured at fair value under SFAS 141 or SFAS 141R, regardless of whether those assets and liabilities are related to leases. The adoption of FSP 157-1 did not have an impact on our consolidated financial statements.

Also in February 2008, the FASB issued FASB Staff Position No. 157-2 ("FSP 157-2"), "Effective Date of FASB Statement No. 157." With the issuance of FSP 157-2, the FASB agreed to: (a) defer the effective date in SFAS No. 157 for one year for certain nonfinancial assets and nonfinancial liabilities, except those that are recognized or disclosed at fair value in the financial statements on a recurring basis (at least annually), and (b) remove certain leasing transactions from the scope of SFAS 157. The deferral is intended to provide the FASB time to consider the effect of certain implementation issues that have arisen from the application of SFAS 157 to these assets and liabilities.

In March 2008, the FASB issued SFAS No. 161, "Disclosures about Derivative Instruments and Hedging Activities" ("SFAS 161"). SFAS 161 is intended to improve financial reporting of derivative instruments and hedging activities by requiring enhanced disclosures to enable financial statement users to better understand the effects of derivatives and hedging on an entity's financial position, financial performance and cash flows. The provisions of SFAS 161 are effective for interim periods and fiscal years beginning after November 15, 2008, with early adoption encouraged. We do not anticipate that the adoption of SFAS 161 will have a material impact on our consolidated results of operations or consolidated financial position.

In April 2008, the FASB issued FASB Staff Position No. 142-3 "Determination of the useful life of Intangible Assets" ("FSP 142-3"), which amends the factors a company should consider when developing renewal assumptions used to determine the useful life of an intangible asset under SFAS142. This Issue is effective for financial statements issued for fiscal years beginning after December 15, 2008, and interim periods within those fiscal years. SFAS 142 requires companies to consider whether renewal can be completed without substantial cost or material modification of the existing terms and conditions associated with the asset. FSP 142-3 replaces the previous useful life criteria with a new requirement-that an entity consider its own historical experience in renewing similar arrangements. If historical experience does not exist then the Company would consider market participant assumptions regarding renewal including 1) highest and best use of the asset by a market participant, and 2) adjustments for other entity-specific factors included in SFAS 142. We do not anticipate that the adoption of FSP 142-3 will have a material impact on our consolidated results of operations or consolidated financial position.

In May 2008, the FASB issued SFAS No. 162, "The Hierarchy of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles" ("SFAS 162"). SFAS 162 is intended to improve financial reporting by identifying a consistent framework, or hierarchy, for selecting accounting principles to be used in preparing financial statements that are presented in conformity with GAAP for nongovernmental entities. SFAS 162 is effective 60 days following the SEC's approval of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board ("PCAOB") amendments to AU Section 411, "The Meaning of Present Fairly in Conformity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles." We do not expect the adoption of SFAS 162 will have a material impact on our consolidated results of operations or consolidated financial position.

On May 9, 2008, the FASB issued FASB Staff Position No. APB 14-1 ("FSP APB 14-1"), "Accounting for Convertible Debt Instruments That May Be Settled in Cash upon Conversion (Including Partial Cash Settlement)." FSP APB 14-1 clarifies that convertible debt instruments that may be settled in cash upon conversion (including partial cash settlement) are not addressed by paragraph 12 of APB Opinion No. 14, "Accounting for Convertible Debt and Debt Issued with Stock Purchase Warrants." Additionally, FSP APB 14-1 specifies that issuers of such instruments should separately account for the liability and equity components in a manner that will reflect the entity's nonconvertible debt borrowing rate when interest cost is recognized in subsequent periods. FSP APB14-1 is effective for financial statements issued for fiscal years beginning after December 15, 2008, and interim periods within those fiscal years. We are currently evaluating the impact that FSP APB 14-1 will have on our consolidated results of operations or consolidated financial position.

On June 16, 2008, the FASB issued FSP No. EITF 03-6-1 ("FSP EITF 03-6-1"), "Determining Whether Instruments Granted in Share-Based Payment Transactions Are Participating Securities," to address the question of whether instruments granted in share-based payment transactions are participating securities prior to vesting. FSP EITF 03-6-1 indicates that unvested share-based payment awards that contain rights to dividend payments should be included in earnings per share calculations. The guidance will be effective for fiscal years beginning after December 15, 2008. We are currently evaluating the requirements of FSP EITF 03-6-1 and the impact that its adoption will have on the consolidated results of operations or consolidated financial position.

In June 2008, the FASB issued Emerging Issues Task Force Issue 07-5 "Determining whether an Instrument (or Embedded Feature) is indexed to an Entity's Own Stock" ("EITF No. 07-5"). This Issue is effective for financial statements issued for fiscal years beginning after December 15, 2008, and interim periods within those fiscal years. Early application is not permitted. Paragraph 11(a) of Statement of Financial Accounting Standard No 133 "Accounting for Derivatives and Hedging Activities" ("FAS 133") specifies that a contract that would otherwise meet the definition of a derivative but is both (a) indexed to the Company's own stock and (b) classified in stockholders' equity in the statement of financial position would not be considered a derivative financial instrument. EITF No.07-5 provides a new two-step model to be applied in determining whether a financial instrument or an embedded feature is indexed to an issuer's own stock and thus able to qualify for the FAS 133 paragraph 11(a) scope exception. We believe adopting this statement will not have a material impact on the financial statements.

In June 2008, FASB issued EITF 08-4, "Transition Guidance for Conforming Changes to Issue No. 98-5". The objective of EITF 08-4 is to provide transition guidance for conforming changes made to EITF 98-5, "Accounting for Convertible Securities with Beneficial Conversion Features or Contingently Adjustable Conversion Ratios", that result from EITF 00-27 "Application of Issue No. 98-5 to Certain Convertible Instruments", and FAS 150, "Accounting for Certain Financial Instruments with Characteristics of both Liabilities and Equity". This Issue is effective for financial statements issued for fiscal years ending after December 15, 2008. Early application is permitted. We are currently evaluating the impact that adopting EITF 08-4 will have on the financial statements.

On October 10, 2008, the FASB issued FSP 157-3, "Determining the Fair Value of a Financial Asset When the Market for That Asset Is Not Active," which clarifies the application of FAS 157 in a market that is not active and provides an example to illustrate key considerations in determining the fair value of a financial asset when the market for that financial asset is not active. FSP 157-3 became effective on October 10, 2008, and its adoption did not have a material impact on the Company's financial position or results for the year ended December 31, 2008.

In January 2009, the FASB issued FSP EITF 99-20-1, "Amendments to the Impairment Guidance of EITF Issue No. 99-20, and EITF Issue No. 99-20, Recognition of Interest Income and Impairment on Purchased and Retained Beneficial Interests in Securitized Financial Assets" ("FSP EITF 99-20-1"). FSP EITF 99-20-1 changes the impairment model included within EITF 99-20 to be more consistent with the impairment models of FAS No. 115. FSP EITF 99-20-1 achieves this by amending the impairment model in EITF 99-20 to remove its exclusive reliance on "market participant" estimates of future cash flows used in determining fair value. Changing the cash flows used to analyze other-than-temporary impairment from the "market participant" view to a holder's estimate of whether there has been a "probable" adverse change in estimated cash flows allows companies to apply reasonable judgment in assessing whether an other-than-temporary impairment has occurred. The adoption of FSP EITF 99-20-1 will not have a material impact on our consolidated financial statements.

In April 2009, the FASB issued FSP FAS 157-4, "Determining Fair Value When the Volume and Level of Activity for the Asset or Liability Have Significantly Decreased and Identifying Transactions That Are Not Orderly" ("FSP FAS 157-4"). FSP FAS 157-4 provides additional guidance for estimating fair value measurements in accordance with FASB Statement No. 157 when there is not an active market or where the price inputs being used represent distressed sales. FSP FAS 157-4 provides additional guidance on the major categories for which equity and debt securities disclosures are to be presented and amends the disclosure requirements of FASB Statement No. 157 to require disclosure in interim and annual periods of the inputs and valuation technique(s) used to measure fair value and a discussion of changes in valuation techniques and related inputs, if any, during the period. FSP FAS 157-4 shall be applied prospectively and is effective for interim and annual reporting periods ending after June 15, 2009, with early adoption permitted for periods ending after March 15, 2009. An entity early adopting this FSP must also early adopt FSP No. FAS 115-2 and FAS 124-2, Recognition and Presentation of Other-Than-Temporary Impairment ("FSP FAS 115-2 and FAS 124-2"). We are in the process of evaluating the impact, if any, of applying this FSP on its financial position, results of operations and cash flows.

In April 2009, the FASB issued FSP FAS 115-2 and FAS 124-2. This FSP amends SFAS 115, "Accounting for Certain Investments in Debt and Equity Securities," SFAS 124, "Accounting for Certain Investments Held by Not-for-Profit Organizations," and EITF Issue No. 99-20, "Recognition of Interest Income and Impairment on Purchased Beneficial Interests and Beneficial Interests That Continue to Be Held by a Transferor in Securitized Financial Assets," to make the other-than-temporary impairments guidance more operational and to improve the presentation of other-than-temporary impairments in the financial statements. This FSP will replace the existing requirement that the entity's management assert it has both the intent and ability to hold an impaired debt security until recovery with a requirement that management assert it does not have the intent to sell the security, and it is more likely than not it will not have to sell the security before recovery of its cost basis. This FSP provides increased disclosure about the credit and noncredit components of impaired debt securities that are not expected to be sold and also requires increased and more frequent disclosures regarding expected cash flows, credit losses, and an aging of securities with unrealized losses. Although this FSP does not result in a change in the carrying amount of debt securities, it does require that the portion of an other-than-temporary impairment not related to a credit loss for a held-to-maturity security be recognized in a new category of other comprehensive income and be amortized over the remaining life of the debt security as an increase in the carrying value of the security. This FSP shall be effective for interim and annual periods ending after June 15, 2009, with early adoption permitted for periods ending after March 15, 2009. haben einige wohl doch gelesen.

Haben einige ein Problem mit den O/S shares

A/S 500.000.00 und O/S so 500.000.000

Dazu kommt wohl nicht gut an, dass Lanza jederzeit gehen könnte (?),

mehr hab ich auch nicht verstanden, da hat der nennwert recht.

P.S. hab aber dennoch eine erste trading-posi zu .14 € wieder geholt, mal sehen, ob das schlau war. Schließlich wollen wir immer noch an die OTC und das venture mit der koreanischen CHA ist gut, hoffe es bleibt nicht die einzige.

Das Behandlungszentrum verwendete dabei ihre eigenen Stammzellen, die aus dem Knochenmark ihres Beckenknochens gewonnen, zentrifugiert und einen Tag später via Lumbalpunktion reimplantiert wurden (2.95 Millionen Zellen). Beide Behandlungen verliefen schnell und waren nicht belastend. In den vergangenen sechs Wochen konnten wir signifikante Verbesserungen im Verhalten, der Konzentrationsfähigkeit, Hyperaktivität und Schlaflosigkeit unserer Tochter beobachten. Speku weiß genau, was er sagt. Und Du weißt das auch. Du möchtest lediglich nicht, dass andere es auch wissen, und deshalb die Aktie nicht kaufen.
Mein errechneter Wert von 0.053 ist genau der Wert, der mir die beste Gewinnchance wieder gibt.

Geht das Teil unter 0.04, dann ist Schluss, und dann geht wieder einer deiner 102 Bankrottempfehlungen hier bei w/o seinen gewohnten Weg.

Für mich unfassbar ist, dass es hier noch Anleger gibt, die nicht meiner Meinung sind.

Wer hier Geld verdient sind nicht die, die diesen thread hier hochhalten. Geld verdienen wir, weil wir kurz nach jeden Pressemeldungen die Aktien wieder verkaufen, die wir unten laangsam wieder aufsammeln. Davon lebt die Firma, und für uns ist es Tagesgeschäft.
Dass du deine Aktien hältst ist ein klares Anzeichen dafür, dass du die Pressemeldungen immer falsch interpretierst. Da habe ich im Grundsatz auch nichts dagegen, aber hoere auf, hier jeden Puups als Erfolgsmeldung der Firma weiterzuleiten. Dies endet stets mit Verlusten für die unbedarften Anleger. Da nützt dir auch nicht, das ewige Argument des Titels deines threads. Damit willst du nur kundtun, dass du nicht die Aktie puschst. Uebrigens ist das noch verwerflicher, als Unkenntnis. Ich finde, es wird Zeit fuer dich, sich hier langsam zurückzuziehen.

Hallo Leute,

bin aus dem Urlaub zurück und habe gleich wieder in ACTC investiert. Es sieht so aus als würde die .18 als Marke übersprungen und die .28 in Angriff genommen. Sollte es bis zum Abend über .18 halten, kaufe ich kurz vor Börsenschluss in NY wieder nach.

Die "bad-news" sind überstanden >>> denn ACTC will einfach grundsätzlich nach oben.

(Advanced Cell, ACT) (ACTC, Trade ) announced today that it has filed its Form 10-Q for the first quarter ended March 31, 2009. The filing brings the Company's financial statements current. The Company plans to seek relisting on the Over-the-Counter Bulletin Board.

Das Level 2 zeigt einen ersten Support bei 0,18 USD an. Es sieht tatsächlich nach einem Anstieg auch ohne News aus. Die 0,22 bis 0,24 könnten wir in den kommenden Tagen wieder sehen. Und dann brauchen wir richtig Volumen >>> dafür habe ich noch Cash zurückgelegt um zu helfen.

Hab auf 200k aufgestockt. Bin jetzt bereit wir können starten.

Advanced Cell wird jetzt einen Mega Run hinlegen nachdem sich Stoch RSI stark abgekühlt haben.

Es ist logisch dass der Kurs jetzt wieder sehr stark anziehen wird bis 27cent.

Danach werden wir mit grossem Volumen den Ice-Berg bei 27-30cent wegsprengen.

Dann werden wir erstmal Kurse von 35-50cent fürs erste sehen.

Für ende 2009 seh ich mindestens den Dollar.

ACTC bekommt meine Zustimmung für die Kapitalerhöhung. Ich bin gestern zu 70 % raus und warte auf die 0,141 USD. Dann steige ich wieder ein, denn ACTC ist auf einem guten Weg. Nur ich will Geld verdienen und nicht nur in die Kurse starren.

Entry into a Material Definitive Agreement, Financial Statements a


ITEM 1.01 Entry into a Material Definitive Agreement.

On July 29, 2009, Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. (the "Company") entered into a consent, amendment and exchange agreement (the "Consent and Amendment") with holders (the "Holders") of the Company's outstanding convertible debentures in the aggregate outstanding principal amount of $17,175,931 (the "Debentures") and warrants to purchase an aggregate of 205,251,285 shares of the Company's common stock (the "Warrants"), which were issued in private placements that closed in September 2005, August 2006, August 2007, and March 2008.

Simultaneously with the execution of Consent and Amendment, and as a condition of the Consent and Amendment, the Company and the Holders entered into a Standstill and Forbearance Agreement (the "Forbearance Agreement"). Pursuant to the Forbearance Agreement:

� The Company acknowledged certain defaults that have occurred under the Debentures and documents executed in connection therewith (the "Transaction Documents").

� The Holders agreed to forbear from exercising their rights and remedies under the Debentures and the Transaction Documents.

� The obligation of the Holders to forbear from exercising their rights and remedies under the Debentures and the Transaction Documents will terminate on the earliest of (i) the date, if any, on which a petition for relief under the date, if any, on which a petition for relief under the United States Bankruptcy Code or any similar state or Canadian law is filed by or against the Company or any of its subsidiaries or (ii) the date the Forbearance Agreement is otherwise terminated or expires, it being understood that the Holders holding 67% of the then outstanding principal amount of the Debentures shall have the right to terminate the Forbearance Agreement on 3 business days' prior notice to the Company.

� The Company provided a general release in favor of the Holders.

Pursuant to the Consent and Amendment:

� The Company agreed to issue to each Holder in exchange for such Holder's Debenture an amended and restated Debenture (the "Amended and Restated Debentures") in a principal amount equal to the principal amount of such Holder's Debenture times 1.35 minus any interest paid thereon.

� The conversion price under the Amended and Restated Debentures was reduced to $0.10, subject to further adjustment as provided therein (including for stock splits, stock dividends, and certain subsequent equity sales).

� The maturity date under the Amended and Restated Debentures was extended until December 31, 2010.

� The Amended and Restated Debentures bear interest at the rate of 12% per annum, which shall accrete to, and increase the principal amount payable upon maturity.

� The Amended and Restated Debentures will begin to amortize on September 25, 2009 at a rate of 6.25% of the outstanding principal amount per month, valued at the lesser of the then conversion price and 90% of the average volume weighted average price for the ten prior trading days.

� The Company agreed to issue to each Holder in exchange for such Holder's Warrant an amended and restated Warrant (the "Amended and Restated Warrants").

� The exercise price under the Amended and Restated Warrants was reduced to $0.10 subject to further adjustment as provided therein (including for stock splits, stock dividends, and certain subsequent equity sales).

� The termination date under the Amended and Restated Warrants was extended until June 30, 2014.

� The Company agreed to amend the Company's articles of incorporation to increase the number of authorized shares of Common Stock (the "Amendment"). If the Company does not receive the receive the requisite shareholder approval for, and receive acceptance of the filing for, the Amendment by September 25, 2009, the Company shall pay to the Holders, monthly commencing on September 25, 2009, until the Amendment is duly filed, liquidated damages equal to 5% of the purchase price of the Debentures.

� The Company agreed to increase the number of shares available for issuance under the Company's 2005 Stock Incentive Plan to 129,000,000 shares, by September 18, 2009.

� The Holders agreed to waive any event of default under the Debentures resulting solely from (i) any adjustment to the conversion price of the Debenture and exercise price of the Warrants that would result from the reduction of the conversion price of certain securities of the Company pursuant to the Stipulation of Settlement, dated March 11, 2009, between the Company and Alpha Capital, and (ii) any failure by the Company to reserve such number of authorized but unissued shares of common stock issuable upon conversion of the Debentures and exercise of the Warrants.

In connection with the foregoing, the Company relied upon the exemption provided in Section 4(2) of the Securities Act and/or Regulation D promulgated under the Securities Act. No form of general solicitation or general advertising was conducted in connection with the issuance. The Holders are all accredited investors. Each of the securities contain restrictive legends preventing the sale, transfer or other disposition of such securities, unless registered under the Securities Act, or pursuant to an exemption therefrom.

Hab das filing so verstanden, dass jetzt ne Menge shares gewandelt und verkauft werden können, weil der Ausübungspreis auf .10 USD runtergesetzt worden ist, richtig (?)

Habe dennoch eine erste Posi wieda aufgebaut, weil nu bald kommen müssten: der FDA-Zulassungsantrag für das "Augen-Verfahren" (nenn ich es mal jetzt laienhaft) und der OTC-Wechsel.

Mal sehen, könnte mich bloß in den Arsch beißen, dass ich seinerzeit nicht alles geschmissen hatte zu .20 €, weil ich endlich auf ein Überwinden des alten highs durch die .30 USD spekuliert hatte, grrr.

Ja, halte mir auch noch Pulver frei, falls sie vor den news in diesen Bereich "dilutieren" sollte, was zwar ziemlich dämlich wäre, aber man weiß es ja nie.
Habe daher nur ein erstes kleines Positiönchen wieda aufgebaut, so rein vorsorglich.

Heute sind in F zwei größere Positionen geworfen worden.
Ich vermute, die wollten schlicht Bares feischaffen, um noch ein bisserl die derzeit angesagten Banken mitzureiten.

stem-cell-sektor ist grad nicht so gefragt, allerdings kann sich das ja morgen schon wieder geändert haben, wer weiß ...

klingt eher nach Schwachsinn.

Relevanter sind die Kurse in NY. Freitagmittag hat der Makler in Deutschland Feierbend gemacht. Es wurde dann irgendein Dummwert eingestellt und Schönes Wochenende. Du musst die Anleger nicht immer versuchen aufs Glatteis zu führen.

bin seit dem großen Fall nicht mehr dabei.

Ich warte jetzt erst mal ab, wie und was sich bei actc so entwickelt. Biotech kann oft sehr lange brauchen und manchmal geht alles recht schnell. Wenn hier wieder Phantasie rein kommt wirds auch wieder was. Aber der Gesamtmarkt bietet im Augenblick bessere und risikoärmere Invests an. Und auf KE Spiralen und nachfolgende reverse Splitts hab ich keine Lust.

Ach mein verbliebener Stammzellenwert im Depot heisst GERN.

Bin auf StandBy. Wenn wieder klare Luft und Sicht herrscht sitze ich wieder mit im Zug.

Wenn ich mir so die Pressemeldungen von ACTC durchlese, dann stelle ich fest, dass sie genau in die Typitisierungschablone passen, die viele pinks vornehmen, bevor der Exodus eingeleitet wird.

Es ist sicherlich nicht meine Aufgabe, die Anleger hier zu warnen. Die PR wird sicherlich wieder heute einen Zock auslösen, der einige Stunden später wieder zerfällt. Wer sich an dem Zock beteiligt, dem wünsche ich das Quentchen Glück. Alle anderen sollten höhere Kurse zum Ausstieg nutzen.

Zunächst Merry Christmas, liebe Threadmitglieder. Eines müsste ja in diesem Forum jedem klar sein: Dass wir hier auf einer Bombe von Microsoftformat sitzen. Warum der Kurs noch so niedrig ist, hat mehrere Ursachen. 1. Die Finanzierung von Actc durch Ausgabe immer neuer Anteile speziell zum Zeitpunkt des BW-Special 2. Anhängige Prozesse um Abfindungen und offenen Rechungen ließen Bankrottnähe vermuten 3. Das auf Eislegen der embryonalen Stammzellen Phase II für die Netzhautregeneration am Menschen durch die FDA 4. Durch den Wechsel zu den Pinksheets aufgrund nicht rechtzeitiger Q-Abschlüsse 5. Durch das Veto von G.W.Bush zur Stammzellengewinnung mittels Embryos 6. Das Ausbleiben eines Angebotes durch einen großen PArtern bzw. Staatsfunding
Jetzt stehen die Zeichen aber auf "Change":
1. Obama hat die Leadership der USA in Sachen Science Stemcells ganz oben auf der Agenda und damit wird staatliches Funding wahrscheinlich
2. Alle großen Pharmaziehersteller haben sich in die Stammzellenforschung eingekauft bzw. sind dabei
3. Actc hat einen Partner für ein JV gefunden und ist vorläufig aus den finanziellen Schwieirigkeiten heraus
4. Der Wechsel von den Pinks zur OTC wird allein schon 100% vom jetzigen Kurs ausmachen
5.Actc hat die führende Technologie, um aus Embryos Stammzellen zu gewinnen, ohne die Emb. zu töten
6. Über 200 Patente und mit Dr. Lanza einen der bekanntesten Vertreter der Stammzellenforschung
7. Eine lächerliche Mktcap von 10,7 Mio $ Es ist selbst für Laien erkennbar, dass eine industrielle Revolution wieder am Horizont erscheint: Stammzellentherapien. Von künstlich gezüchteten Zähnen bis zum Ersatzteil Organ,Arm usw. für Soldaten, für das sich das Pentagon interessiert, ist alles möglich. Das gilt auch für den Kurs der Aktie. Da gibt es nur eines: Akkumilieren und Ruhe bewahren. Noch Ende Januars werden wir eine deutliche Aufwärtsbewegung sehen und die Daytrader werden sich in den ....beißen.

In a recent Newsweek article touting “embryonic stem cells are still regarded as the gold standard”, we learn more about Geron Corporation’s plans to conduct a spinal-cord-injury trial - the first trial ever for embryonic stem cells in the U.S.

To be held in California, the trial will recruit patients within one to two weeks of their injuries, before scar tissue has formed. Doctors will inject a derivative of stem cells, called progenitor cells, that manufacture myelin, the substance that coats the long, spindly projections on nerve cells, much the same way that insulation coats electrical wires.

Damage to cells that make and maintain the myelin sheath, as happens in spinal-cord injuries, prevents nerves from conveying messages from the brain. Although it's not clear yet whether the treatment is effective or safe, the restoration of even partial function would be a huge advance.

According to the article, Geron's CEO, Dr. Thomas Okarma, thinks that spinal injury is a logical place to begin. Because patients will be completely paralyzed from the waist down, any improvement will be the result of the therapy, not chance. And the spinal cord is an "immune-privileged site," meaning that the attack cells of the immune system cannot get in and destroy the embryo-derived cells. "If the therapy is safe and effective, the potential impact will extend way beyond spinal-cord injury," says Okarma. "It will mark the start of a new era in medical therapeutics."

Al Gore, now a partner in the venture-capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, has thrown his weight behind the research.

Geron’s success could give a bump to other stem cell companies working with embryonic stem cells, like Advanced Cell Technology (ACTC), which is scheduled to file an IND with the FDA to begin human clinical trials sometime “in the next 3 or 4 months.” (ADVANCED CELL TECHNOLOGY AND COLLABORATORS AT THE CASEY EYE INSTITUTE PRESENT PROMISING DATA SUPPORTING SAFETY AND EFFICACY OF STEM CELL THERAPY TO COMBAT RETINAL DISEASE)

Newsweek claims other companies aren't waiting for the results. The U.S. pharmaceutical giant Pfizer is pursuing two other embryonic-stem-cell-based therapies, which it hopes to have in clinical trials by 2011. In April the company partnered with University College London to pursue a therapy for macular degeneration, the principal cause of blindness in the elderly.
