Chinadotcom-Vorstand Yip strebt für kommendes Jahr operativen Gewinn an
18.05.2000 13:47
USD an kurzfristig verfügbaren Mitteln. USD.
Yip will sein Unternehmen im Stile einer "Old Economy-Firma" führen, was sich auch in soliden "Old Economy"-Fundamentaldaten niederschlagen solle. Deshalb werde Chinadotcom umsichtig in junge Internetfirmen investieren.

Merrill Lynch starts chinadotcom
at "accumulate"
HONG KONG, June 2 (Reuters) - Merrill Lynch on Friday
said it started coverage of Internet firm Chinadotcom
(NasdaqNM:CHINA - news) with intermediate-term ``accumulate`` and long-term ``buy``
ratings.
In a research note, Merrill Lynch said it considers Chinadotcom more than a Chinese-language
portal - as is the common perception - but rather a pan-Asian Internet firm that is building a
network of several Internet companies.
Analysts David Cui and Matei Mihalca identified a valuation range for the stock of US$18.60
to $48.80 a share, acknowledging that Chinadotcom is likely to trade in a wide range. They
used a price to revenue multiple, discounted cash flow and sum-of-the-parts valuation methods
to reach a valuation range.
They noted that Chinadotcom had US$561 million in cash at the end of March, with an
estimated burn rate of US$3 million a month.
Hong Kong-based Chinadotcom closed Thursday on Nasdaq at 23/13, far below a high of
US$78 reached in early March.
The researchers based their opinion on Chinadotcom`s leading position in Asian Internet and
online advertising services businesses. The firm`s estimated 2000 revenue is US$90.2 million,
with a forecast turnover of US$152.8 in 2001, the report said.

Net Boom
Rapid growth (Rapides Wachstum)
Kein Aufhalten..., Userzahlen steigen immens schnell...
THERE is no stopping Internet use in China. Since its debut in 1994 with 1,600 registered users, the Chinese Internet sector has experienced virtually exponential growth, with registered users increasing to 620,000 in 1997 and to 2.1 million in 1998.
Even more spectacularly, the number of users last year alone quadrupled to 8.9 million, compared with 4.5 million in Taiwan and 22 million in Japan.
The number of websites has also increased sharply within a short time, from 3,700 in mid-1998 to 15,153 last year. Domain addresses soared from 9,415 to 48,695 for the same period.
By the end of this year, the registered users may swell to 20 million.
User profile
A survey showed that 86 per cent of users (7.7 million) are between 18 and 35, with 79 per cent (7 million) being males.
About 84 per cent (7.5 million) have college education and above.
About 64 per cent (5.7 million) earn more than 1,000 yuan (S$200) a month, which is above the national average.
Government`s push
Beijing has promoted Internet use actively, as it believes that cyberspace development can boost competitiveness and generate good economic returns.
Direct measures include expanding bandwidth to keep up with rising demand and tightening Internet security from hackers.
China has launched several ""Golden Projects`` to spearhead IT growth. For instance:
The Golden Bridge project is aimed at wiring millions of Chinese citizens to the nationwide financial network by 2010.
The Golden Card smart cards will facilitate financial transactions with, and payments to, government departments.
Future of Chinese Internet
Many foreign multinationals, vying for a share of this growing market, believe that, in the long run, the Chinese-language Internet may become a viable medium of communication, next to that in English, on account of a potentially large number of Chinese Internet users worldwide.
This could offset the short-term risks that foreign firms may have to bear by entering the Chinese market now. --East Asian Institute report
