Delta expects to lodge Solomon mine claim
SYDNEY, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Delta Gold Ltd on Thursday said it expected to lodge an insurance claim
soon for damage to its Gold Ridge mine, which was forced to close in early June because of ethnic
violence in the Solomon Islands.
Closure of the mine, which occurred a few weeks before work was also stopped at Delta`s Eureka gold
mine in Zimbabwe, were the prime reasons leading to Delta posting a net loss of A$114.8 million in
1999/00 (July June) earlier on Thursday, managing director Terry Burgess said.
The closures blemished and otherwise strong performance from the company`s Australian mining
businesses, which provided the company with record gold production of 603,000 ounces. "The value of non-performing and under-performing assets in Zimbabwe and the Solomon Islands have
been written down by A$143.7 million following a rigorous assessment of the effects of the recent
socio-economic instability in these countries, resulting in a net loss after abnormals and extraordinary
items of A$114.8 million," Burgess said.
Burgess said A$70 million in political risk insurance and US$21.5 million in non-recourse project
financing would soften the blow from Gold Ridge. He declined to say when the claim would be lodged.
Delta acquired the Gold Ridge deposit as part of its acquisition of smaller mining house Ross Mining NL
in March, elevating Delta to Australia`s fourth largest gold miner.
Burgess could not say if the mine would ever be reactivated.
Tension has simmered for decades in the former British colony about 1,600 km (1,000 miles) northeast of
Australia, with people from the main Guadalcanal island resenting migrants from Malaita because they
were seen as taking the top jobs in Honiara.
About 70 people have died in clashes in the past two years.
WRONG DECISION?
"Did we make the wrong decision? In hindsight it doesn`t look good," Burgess said.
Delta personnel have been unable to re-enter the mine following the worst outbreak of violence in the
South Pacific nation since independence from Britain 22 years ago.
"At this time we are expecting nothing from Gold Ridge," he said.
Analysts have suggested the loss could expose Delta to a takeover bid, although its foreign assets are
viewed as deterrents to any suitors.
"Delta could very well be in play soon, but anyone who wants to take them over would have to wear the
costs of the two mines (Gold Ridge and Eureka)," said one analyst who follows Delta.
Brokers said the loss was widely anticipated, leaving Delta to close one cent lower at A$1.32.
Burgess insisted there needed to be economic reform and an improved business environment in place in
Zimbabwe before Delta would consider reopening the Eureka mine.
This year Delta expects to produce between 450,000 and a half-million ounces of gold, with 250,000
ounces coming from its flagship mine, Kanowna Belle, in Western Australia.
The Granny Smith mine, a 40-60 joint venture with Placer Dome Inc should deliver 150,000 ounces to
Delta, while the wholly-owned Golden Feather mine should yield between 50,000 and 100,000 ounces,
Burgess said.
A decision on the timing of development of the 4.5 million ounce resource Wallaby prospect was under
negotiation with joint venture partner Homestake Mining Co and would likely be made by January,
Burgess said.

die "Wilden" endlich lernen wie man sich benimmt: Sollen die sich doch gegenseitig massakrieren;

@Sovereign,

wieder "peace" herrsche... Ja auch die Mine (Ridge-Mine is a very rich

Nein
Na ja, jetzt ist erst mal Wochenende.
