Vielleicht kann jemand mehr über die Aktie sagen. Sieht interesant aus.
VANCOUVER, Jan 25 (Reuters) - Shares of methanol giant Methanex Corp (Toronto:MX.TO - news)(NasdaqNM:MEOH - news)
jumped on Thursday, a day after the Canadian company announced stronger earnings on higher prices and forecast vibrant market
conditions for 2001.
Its shares were up 55 Canadian cents at C$8.85 a share in midday trading on the Toronto Exchange. Its stock has ranged between C$2.33 and C$9.90 in the past 52
weeks.
The company`s shares on Nasdaq were up $7/16 at $5 7/8 at midday on Thursday.
Methanex executives told analysts on Thursday they were pleased by news that U.S. makers of the MTBE, which is made from methanol, have filed a lawsuit to block
California`s plan to ban the fuel additive by the end of 2002.
MTBE makes gasoline burn cleaner to reduce air pollution, but critics want it banned across North America because it contributes to water pollution. MTBE producers
say the problem could be solved by repairing leaking fuel tanks.
Methanex on Wednesday reported net earnings of $65.3 million, or 40 cents per share, in the three months ended Dec. 31. It recorded a net loss of $77 million, or 45
cents per share, in the same period last year that included a one-time restructuring charge.
The company last year emerged from red ink caused by a worldwide methanol glut. Company executives reaffirmed in a conference call with analysts on Thursday they
remain optimistic about market conditions for 2001.
Methanol is a natural gas derivative that is used to produce a variety of industrial products such as acetic acid, formaldehyde and MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether), and
additive used to make gasoline burn cleaner.
Methanex has been been the leading critic of California`s proposed ban, and has sought millions of dollars in damages from the U.S. federal government under the North
American Free Trade Agreement.
Chief executive Pierre Choquette told analysts on Thursday the lawsuit filed by MTBE producers this week represented the industry`s willingness to be more aggressive
in fighting California.
``To me that`s a hell of a change in momentum,`` Choquette said.
He said it was too early to gauge the effect of President Bush`s election. Bush has indicated he might ease environmental rules in a bid to ease California`s ongoing
energy crisis.

zu Methanex:
Methanex ist der weltweit größte Methanolhändler - betreibt jedoch auch eigene Anlagen zur Methanolproduktion (USA, NZ usw.).
Basis meist Erdgas/-öl; hängt also an Rohstoffpreisen.
