Nasdaq may cut staff
Company warns employees of `staff
reductions` next month, report says

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - The Nasdaq Stock Market has warned its employees
that layoffs could be just around the corner, according to a published report
Tuesday.

The Wall Street Journal, citing an unnamed source familiar with the matter,
said Nasdaq told employees in an e-mail on May 21 that it anticipates "staff
reductions" to be announced "as soon as is practical within the month of
June."

The e-mail was distributed to the market`s 1,200 to 1,400 employees and
could affect 5 percent of the staff, or between 60 and 70 people, the report
said.

A Nasdaq spokesman confirmed the details of the message, the Journal
said.

"During the last 12 months, we have witnessed how the growth and
profitability of issuer businesses throughout the world can suddenly change
for the worse. Nasdaq is not immune from them either," the report quoted
Hardwick Simmons, Nasdaq`s chief executive, as saying in the e-mail
message.

While no specific department is being targeted for layoffs, the market`s
technical operations, which account for about 60 percent of its employees,
could face the brunt of the cuts, the paper said.

The Nasdaq Stock Market, which is owned by the National Association of
Securities Dealers, last month delayed the consideration of its initial public
offering of stock to later in the fall, but said the earliest an offering is
expected will be sometime in 2002.
