      Taser spell weakens for investors

      By Chelsea Emery

NEW YORK, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Taser International Inc.`s

(NASDAQ:TASR) shareholders, enchanted by the prospects of stronger stun-gun sales to police and the military, have had a charmed year as they`ve watched the stock soar by 1500 percent

But by Friday, it appeared the spell was weakening.

"Last Halloween, the stock was at $3 dollars," said BrokerageAmerica analyst John Licata. "If you think about it in terms of trick or treat, I think these are trick levels."

Shares of the maker of non-lethal weapons sagged $3.38, or 5 percent, to $63.37 on Friday, snapping three days of gains, as investors began to re-evaluate the company`s growth prospects after the stock`s stratospheric rise and signs of insider selling.

The stock has more than doubled in the past month alone, fed by a $1-million Department of Defense appropriation to buy the company`s electro-muscular stunners, as well as Taser`s recent higher sales forecast.

But the stock is now selling for 155 times trailing earnings, at the top of the range for its industry group, and company executives have been shedding shares.

"From a law enforcement perspective, there`s not much more upside," said Licata. "And if insiders are tipping their hand, it might be a good idea for investors to follow their leads."

In September, Chairman Phillips Smith sold 100,000 shares, according to data compiled by Thomson Financial. It`s a relatively small amount for an insider trade, but it`s the largest such block in the company`s 10-year history, according to Thomson data.

Chief Executive Officer Patrick Smith and his brother and company President Thomas Smith, sold 12,000 shares and 10,000 shares, respectively, in October. And Chief Financial Officer Kathleen Hanrahan sold 4,844 shares on Oct. 23, Thomson said.

Chairman Phillips Smith said he had a majority of his wealth in Taser stock and he felt it was time to diversify.

"No one intelligent keeps all their holdings in a single stock," he said, adding that the CFO and the president -- his sons and the company founders -- had sold a small amount of holdings to make up for taking low salaries as the company got off the ground. Hanrahan had sold some stock to pay for a new house, he said.

Smith said the share gain is justified, given the promise of future sales to the military.

"There are units in Iraq and Afghanistan on test and evaluation," he said, adding that the company is working with defense contractor General Dynamics Corp. (NYSE:GD) to build a less-lethal landmine.

"We expect to see some fairly interesting levels of interest from the military," said Smith in an interview.

Tasers are a non-deadly gun alternative. One model fires probes attached to wires up to 21 feet. When the wires penetrate clothing and skin, they send a signal to incapacitate the central nervous system. More than 3,500 U.S. law-enforcement agencies use taser weapons and Britain`s Home Office is conducting a test with the view to arming Britain`s unarmed officers with the stunners, the company said.

Strong sales growth has galvanized share gains. Taser said on Oct. 20 that third-quarter sales soared 216 percent to $6.1 million, from the same quarter a year ago.

Looking ahead, the company said it expects 2003 sales of $20 million, up from its earlier forecast of $13 million to $15 million.

But even on a forward-looking basis, the stock is expensive compared to its peers.

Another risk could be the relatively low number of shares in circulation, analysts have said. As of an Oct. 20 company release, Taser had about 4.2 million diluted shares outstanding.

A low number of outstanding shares means that stock prices can swing widely even when trading volume is low. It can also be difficult for investors to unload shares quickly.

To counter this problem, the company is planning to split its shares once it reaches a $1-per-share milestone that will allow it to force redemption of the about 600,000 warrants.

"Calling the warrants should increase the public float..." wrote Roth Capital Partners analyst Steven Gish in a note to clients on Oct. 22." Volatility could ease as a result."
