      NetScreen Defines New Security Frontier
New Platform Delivers Unmatched Performance, Flexibility, Scalability

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 15, 2002--Looking to allow the largest enterprises and carriers to move beyond legacy perimeter-based security models and incorporate security enforcement into their core networks, NetScreen Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq:NSCN - news) today announced a new security platform that provides unmatched performance, flexibility and scalability. The platform delivers NetScreen`s core security technologies of integrated firewall, virtual private network, denial of service protection, and traffic management, while also having the flexibility to protect against external and internal security threats, handle new application requirements and incorporate future capabilities.

The new platform increases network security by enabling customers to enforce security throughout the core of their networks, allowing them to cost effectively segment security resources to meet the needs of individual networks, departments or customers without having to deploy additional security devices. Further, the new platform is designed to enforce security for new applications, such as voice-over-IP, wireless, and gigabit Ethernet LAN and wide area network connections, that dramatically increase the performance requirements of security and require the flexibility to tailor deployments to meet a customer`s network infrastructure.

The first products based on the new platform consist of the NetScreen-5200 and the NetScreen-5400. These purpose-built systems are powered by NetScreen`s new GigaScreen-II ASIC, a significant advance in security technology that offers levels of performance, flexibility and scalability never before seen in a security system. Joined with a flexible system architecture, the GigaScreen-II makes it possible for the NetScreen-5000 Series to combine NetScreen`s core firewall, virtual private network (VPN), denial of service protection, and traffic management technologies in a single high-performance system that has additional capacity to accommodate future security technologies.

``Customers` security requirements have dramatically increased and NetScreen is the only company shipping a platform to secure high-performance networks and critical applications now and in the future,`` said Robert Thomas, president and CEO of NetScreen. ``One of the world`s largest financial institutions has beta tested the NetScreen-5200 and has ordered 22 NetScreen-5200s for a planned calendar Q3 deployment, basing their decision on stability, scalability and manageability. Other customers have ordered NetScreen-5200s to protect their wireless and voice-over-IP environments, as well as using the NetScreen-5000 Series for firewall consolidation projects to reduce costs.``

NetScreen`s new security systems reach unmatched multi-gigabit performance, while still offering the highest levels of protection customers have come to expect from NetScreen. Now, security can operate at performance levels that accommodate customers` multi-gigabit LAN infrastructures, allowing them to protect mission-critical resources in ways previously not available from other security vendors. (See ``NetScreen-5000 Series Sets New Benchmark for Scalable and Flexible Security Solutions`` on the BusinessWire or at www.netscreen.com).

With NetScreen`s newest platforms, customers are able to more efficiently design their security infrastructures and enforce security in the core of the network, while at the same time having the ability to add additional functionality to deal with new threats. The NetScreen-5000 Series is designed to deliver the security enforcement required by today`s threats and adapt to future threats and applications as they emerge.

Enterprises require a security solution that continues to protect the network perimeter and can also match LAN speeds to secure individual departments, wireless LANs, and contain traditional and emerging security threats, such as worms and Trojan horse attacks. Carriers are similarly looking to secure their infrastructures as well as to deploy a scalable platform that can be the basis of a variety of revenue-generating managed security services.

``We listened to our largest enterprise and carrier customers,`` said David Flynn, marketing vice president at NetScreen, ``and put together the state-of-the-art solution they`ve been looking for -- one that lets them migrate to centralized security, and supplement their legacy perimeter security approaches. This is an amazingly fast-moving market -- you either lead it or fall behind. We intend to be the provider of security solutions by which all other security products are compared.``

A New Architecture & ASIC Match New Requirements

NetScreen has designed the chassis-based NetScreen-5000 Series with three levels of flexibility to meet customers` requirements: the GigaScreen-II programmable ASIC, a layered processing architecture, and the ability to accommodate future technology modules. These features provide customers with the highest level of flexibility by enabling the addition of new packet and content inspection capabilities, as well as new security functions. Additionally, the system software and firmware allow NetScreen products to be upgraded quickly and easily.

The GigaScreen-II ASIC, the heart of the NetScreen-5000 Series, advances the way ASIC-based security is implemented. Rather than only accelerating security features as a co-processor aiding a traditional CPU, the GigaScreen-II can act as a fully featured flow processor handling network packet processing tasks that have previously been left to a security system`s central processor. This change in methodology increases performance, allowing the NetScreen-5200 to deliver more than an order of magnitude higher small-packet performance than leading competitors while simultaneously reducing system latency.

The NetScreen-5000 Series scales to set a new benchmark in security performance, with firewall speeds of up to 12 Gigabits per second and VPN speeds of up to 6 Gbps. This level of system performance can be achieved because the ASIC is designed such that multiple chips can be implemented in a system and can be connected via a switched backplane to linearly scale security processing capacity to 12 Gigabits per second and beyond.

``One of the real growth areas for network security is in products that give customers lots of deployment flexibility,`` said Jeff Wilson, executive director of research at Infonetics Research, a leading market research firm. ``End-users and service providers are trying to do much more than just protect their Internet connection; they want to segment off sensitive traffic, isolate wireless networks, protect data centers, and build secure zones for connectivity to customers and partners. The NetScreen-5000 Series products set a new benchmark for deployment flexibility, and demonstrate that NetScreen really has listened to their customers, and tried to solve their day-to-day security problems.``

Die neue Netscreen 5200 soll bei der VPN-Performance 26x so schnell sein wie Cisco PIX535 und 17x so schnell wie Nokia/Checkpoint IP740/FireWall-1.
Laut Test der Tolly-Group, ein unabhängige Testorganisation.
