Bayer, Onyx expand kidney cancer drug trials

FRANKFURT, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Germany`s Bayer AG (XETRA:BAYG.DE - News) and U.S. partner Onyx Pharmaceuticals (NasdaqNM:ONXX - News) said initial studies for a new kidney cancer treatment had been encouraging on Saturday and that they had begun the next phase of trials.

"These data are preliminary, but they appear promising and warrant further exploration of safety and efficiency in Phase III trials," said Susan Kelley, vice president at Bayer`s U.S. oncology division in a statement.

Chemicals and pharmaceuticals firm Bayer said that after initial studies on 41 patients, of whom 18 experienced tumour shrinkage of at least 25 percent, it had launched a large Phase III clinical trial involving over 800 patients worldwide.

But a spokesman for Bayer healthcare cautioned that it was still too early to say when any approval and launch of the kidney cancer treatment might be sought.

"We assume that the Phase III trials will take a few years," he said.

In the development of new drugs Phase III is usually the last big trial which, if deemed to be successful, is normally followed by an application for regulatory approval.

Onyx will receive a $15 million milestone payment from Bayer with the start of the new trials.

Bayer and Onyx said the drug, known as BAY 43-9006, was also being evaluated in less advanced Phase II tests for its potential to treat other tumours including cancers of the colon, pancreas, breast and liver.

Having cut its workworce from 95 to about 20 so far this year and ditched an anti-cancer virus programme, Onyx has been focusing efforts on helping develop the BAY 43-9006 drug.

Frankfurt, 15. Nov (Reuters) - Der Leverkusener Pharma- und Chemiekonzern Bayer AG will im Rahmen seiner Umstrukturierung die Ausgaben für die Pharmaforschung deutlich kürzen. Gegen feindliche Übernahmen will sich der Konzern nach den Worten seines Chefs Werner Wenning künftig mit einem höheren Börsenwert schützen. Im dritten Quartal hatte Bayer (Xetra: 575200.DE - Nachrichten - Forum) im operativen Geschäft einen Gewinneinbruch verzeichnet, unter dem Strich stand sogar ein dreistelliger Millionen-Verlust.
"Unser Forschungs- und Entwicklungsbudget hat mit 28 Prozent vom Umsatz nach dem Rückzug von (Cholesterinsenker) Lipobay keine wettbewerbsfähige Größe mehr. Wir sind dabei, Forschung und Entwicklung auf eine Größenordnung von rund 20 Prozent vom Umsatz zurückzuführen. Damit sind wir für Wettbewerber unserer Größenordnung absolut wettbewerbsfähig", sagte Wenning in einem am Samstag vorab veröffentlichten Gespräch mit dem Nachrichtenmagazin "Der Spiegel". Das wären bei einem geplanten Pharmaumsatz von 3,5 Milliarden Euro rund 700 Millionen Euro. "Entscheidend ist nicht das Geld, sondern die Qualität der Forschung," fügte er hinzu.


KREBSFORSCHUNG WEITER IN DEN USA

Die Krebsforschung in den USA solle bestehen bleiben, über die Asthmaforschung in Japan werde noch nachgedacht, sagte Wenning mit Blick auf die ausländischen Standorte. Trotz der geplanten Ausgabenkürzungen wolle Bayer derzeit aus der Forschung jedes Jahr mindestens acht neue Produkte in die Entwicklung bringen.

Wenning hatte Ende vergangener Woche überraschend eine strategische Wende angekündigt. Die Chemie und Teile des Kunststoffgeschäfts sollen als neue Gesellschaft bis 2005 an die Börse gebracht werden. Durch die Neuaufstellung wird Bayer ein attraktiveres Übernahmeziel. Die Pharmasparte soll dagegen nun doch eigenständig geführt werden. Wenning hatte die Suche nach einem Partner für die durch den Rückruf des Cholesterinsenkers Lipobay 2001 in die Krise geratene Pharmasparte wegen fehlender Optionen bereits vor Wochen aufgegeben. Anlässlich der Präsentation der Quartalszahlen hatte Wenning am Dienstag gesagt, dass Bayer die Pharmasparte künftig "unter den bedeutenden europäischen, mittelgroßen Pharma-Abietern positionieren" wolle. Mit der Neuausrichtung kommt Bayer jahrelangen Forderungen von Investoren und Branchenexperten nach.


WENNING: BESTER SCHUTZ VOR ÜBERNAHMEN IST HOHER BÖRSENWERT

Auf die Frage, ob Wenning als der letzte Vorstandsvorsitzende einer eigenständigen Bayer AG in die Konzerngeschichte eingehen könnte, sagte der Konzernchef: "Das sehe ich nicht so. Mit der Neuaufstellung unserer Geschäfte haben wir die Voraussetzungen für ein langes Leben dieses traditionsreichen Unternehmens geschaffen. Der beste Schutz vor einer feindlichen Übernahme ist ein hoher Börsenwert. Und daran arbeiten wir". Die Entwicklung der Aktie in den letzten Tagen sei jedenfalls äußerst ermutigend gewesen.

Seit der Bekanntgabe der Umstrukturierung am 7. November hat der Aktienkurs rund sieben Prozent zugelegt. Am Freitag schloss das Dividendenpapier 0,8 Prozent höher auf 22,52 Euro. Derzeit beträgt die Marktkapitalsierung von Bayer rund 16,5 Milliarden Euro, was verglichen mit vielen Konkurrenten niedrig ist.

REYKJAVIK, Iceland, Nov. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- deCODE genetics (Nasdaq: DCGN - News) today announced that it has acquired an exclusive worldwide license from Bayer AG to develop and commercialize a small molecule compound. The compound is active against a key target, located within an inflammatory pathway, made by a gene isolated at deCODE that predisposes to myocardial infarction, or heart attack. The compound, DG031, has been shown in previous clinical work in a different indication to be well-tolerated and with no major safety issues. deCODE plans to test it for efficacy in preventing heart attack in an information-rich Phase II clinical trial, enrollment for which is expected to start at the beginning of next year. deCODE plans to provide additional detail on the target and the compound in a scientific article to be submitted at the beginning of the clinical trial. Bayer will receive milestones as the compound advances towards market approval, as well as royalties on sales of the compound as a marketed drug.

Because the cohort is well characterized both clinically and genetically, the company believes that it can conduct a trial gauging the efficacy of this compound in reducing the number of events in two years. This trial will also enable an analysis of the results in relation to a variety of known risk factors -- such as diabetes, obesity, cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, c-reactive protein and myeloperoxidase -- in addition to the generation of pharmacogenomic data on the impact of genetic and clinical factors on drug response.
