FORT MYERS, February 25, 2004 — The way you connect to the Internet is on the brink of changing forever. A Southwest Florida company has patented cutting edge technology the owners say will rocket you onto the internet in ways you never dreamed possible.

Neomedia Technologies, based in Fort Myers, says their new software and a camera cell phone can open the door from the physical world to cyberspace.

The cell phone takes a picture of a bar code on any product and sends you straight to that product`s website. It`s called "PaperClick" technology, and Neomedia plans to launch it in the U.S. later this summer.

"This is everything. At the end of the day this is the remote to the physical world," said Chas Fritz, chairman of Neomedia.

PaperClick was first conceived in the early 90`s, but the company needed packaging.

"We said, `We`ll put it on ice until the device came out,`" Fritz said.

It was on ice for ten years.

"We said, `Oh pic phone,` it`s like the light bulb turned on," Fritz said.

Camera phones are wildly popular. Industry research shows consumers rang up more than $80 million in sales as of January 2004 – and for every personal computer shipped, three camera cell phones were sold.

Now, Neomedia is cashing in on the trend.

If you buy into the technology, here`s what`s in it for you: Take your telephone into any store, pick up a product, snap on the bar code and find out what the price is elsewhere. The camera phone becomes a comparative shopping guide.

"So the consumer can greatly benefit. The retailer might get a little bit edgy," Fritz said.

ABC7 called Target, WalMart, and Barnes & Noble about PaperClick. No one would even comment and declined offers to try the product in their stores.

So instead, we demonstrated PaperClick to customers outside Barnes & Noble, where we ran into Carol. She`d just bought a book, and using PaperClick she found out she could have gotten it cheaper. She says she`d be interested in the software.

"Very much so – in fact everybody wants to know where they can buy something cheaper," Carol said.

Well, maybe not everybody. Another person we met outside said she`s more of a `hands on` buyer.

"I`d just as soon touch the book, and buy it here," Connie said.

That kind of thinking might not be the only hang-up for PaperClick. Walk into any Target and you`ll find those handy book barcodes that the software reads are covered by Target`s own barcodes – which PaperClick cannot read… at least not yet. Not unless Target buys into the technology, too.

For now, Neomedia is counting on netting the big brands to give consumers more than just a comparative shopping guide:
• A bar code on your french fries would give you the carb count
• A bar code on your car would show you how to change a tire
• A bar code on a real estate sign would let you see inside the home while you shop curbside

They are all big ideas, but will shoppers buy into it?

"At the end of the day, we want the short path, no matter what it is. So our technology helps you have the shortest shortcut to the internet," Fritz said.

Currently, PaperClick is only compatible with the Nokia 3560 & 3660, but the company plans to eventually put the software on several other models. While the software won`t cost any extra, customers do have to pay for web access.

Ab 18. März soll PaperClick auf der CeBIT gelauncht werden und dann werden wir sehen, was diese Aktie wirklich wert ist :-) ...

Aber für heute können wir froh sein, wenn die $0.11 - Marke hält. Es macht auf mich nach wie vor den Eindruck, dass die MM die Aktie nicht nachhaltig steigen lassen.

Aber früher oder später klappen diese Spielchen nicht mehr.
