Apple (AAPL)
If you’re like us, it’s hard to say the name of the iconic computer maker Apple without adding the "computer" to its name. But the reality is that Apple is now a consumer electronics company, through and through. And the company admitted as much when it dropped the "computer" from its name at the start of 2007.
There are few firms on the face of the Earth that can generate the type of publicity for the release of a new computer operating system or cell phone the way Apple does through its leader, CEO Steve Jobs. But the best part about the company is that it’s not all hype—it actually delivers on its promises.
After years of wandering in the PC wilderness, Apple’s new Leopard operating system is gaining accolades and market share for its clean look, ease-of-operation, stability and security. And because Apple has tethered its operating system to its computers, every win results in another computer sale…often through one of its growing lineup of company-owned stores.
We’ve been following the re-emergence of Apple for several years now via our ChangeWave Alliance research, and our latest survey found that a stunning 26% of all respondents said that Apple’s new Leopard OS made them "significantly" or "somewhat" more likely to buy an Apple computer in the future. Wow!
With the new Leopard operating system now on the market, we were able to compare its customer satisfaction rating with Microsoft Vista and the Windows XP systems.
An astonishing 81% of Apple buyers said they are very satisfied with Leopard—an exceptionally high rating for a new operating system. This compares to 53% and 51% for Windows XP, and 27% and 15% respectively for the Microsoft Vista systems.
Leopard’s high customer satisfaction not only dwarfs its competitors’, but it’s directly impacting consumer intentions to purchase an Apple computer.
And Apple fever goes beyond U.S. borders. Leopard accounted for more than half of all sales of packaged operating system software in Japan in October—despite being on sale for only the last six days of the month.
Now, it is often said that a leopard can’t change its spots, but is the new Leopard operating system helping to change the PC industry? Judging by ChangeWave’s January 2008 consumer PC survey, the answer may be an unequivocal "yes."
Here’s why:
Apple Mac Sales Skyrocket
Past 90 Days
Consumer sales of Apple laptops (up three points to 17%) and desktops (up six points to 16%) took an astonishing leap over the 2007 holiday shopping season. The chart below shows just how dramatic a transformation in market share this represents for Apple.

Next 90 Days
Looking at the next 90 days, 33% of planned PC buyers said they'll purchase an Apple laptop—a new all-time high for the electronics giant. At the same time, 29% said they'll buy an Apple desktop—matching the November all-time high.
The bottom line for Apple is that Mac laptop and desktop sales remain the biggest growth story in the PC industry—and it’s getting a major boost by the new Leopard operating system.
Apple also has a stranglehold on the digital media player market with its iconic iPod. The company has sold 119 million iPods worldwide since its introduction in 2001, and in the United States, Apple owns 90% of the market for hard drive-based players and 70% of the market of players of all types. That’s market dominance, folks.
