Digital Angel patents glucose-sensing microchip for diabetics

Digital Angel Corp. is developing a new microchip that will help diabetics monitor their glucose levels.
The announcement sent Digital Angel's stock up 40 percent to $1.02 per share in mid-morning trading Wednesday.

The implantable microchip uses radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to measure and transmit data on the concentration of glucose levels in the blood. This information is a necessary part of managing diabetes, because blood-sugar levels determine how much insulin a diabetic person needs. The microchip would replace the current method of checking glucose levels: Pricking the finger to get a blood sample.
"This is a landmark development in the world of diabetes management," said Dr. Joseph Feldman, chairman of the Emergency/Trauma Department of Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey, in a statement released by Digital Angel. "By having this technology, the process [of checking glucose levels] becomes effortless."
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted a patent for the product, which could serve a worldwide market of 230,000 million people with diabetes.
The microchip needs to be developed in clinical trials and receive approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration before it can be marketed, said Digital Angel CEO and President Kevin McGrath, in a statement.
The product, which does not yet have a name, will be distributed by a sister company, VeriChip Corp., which is based in Delray Beach, Fla.
South St. Paul-based Digital Angel (AMEX: DOC - News), which produces a range of electronic tags for livestock, pets and humans, said the glucose-sensing microchip could also be used for diabetic livestock, which is a "major disease issue."
Both Digital Angel and VeriChip are majority-owned by Applied Digital Solutions Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSX - News) of Delray Beach, Fla.

... ich war schon mal vor nem Jahr dabei, bin dann ausgestiegen. Aber das Unternehmen ist interessant. Digital Angel und Verichip ist auch ne Absplittung von Ihnen. Wobei Verichip noch nicht börsennotiert ist (soll kommen).
Der reiskorngrosse Chip wird schon in der Tierwelt eingesetzt,z.B. zum Erkennen von Krankheiten.
Denke mal das hier sehr viel Porential drinnen steckt.
