German OEMs
Quality Can Defy the Cycle;
Upgrading BMW to OW
We believe cash-rich quality can offset cyclical
concerns to drive further outperformance for our
preferred German OEM sub-sector. We raise EPS by
5-15% and upgrade BMW to OW (was UW), attracted
by its long China, long USD and long SUV position.
VW stays our top long-term structural OW (TP
€165).
Could China Surprise? Investors have become
increasingly cautious on China, despite strong sales data.
Only 2% in our investor survey expect premium sales to rise
by more than 20% in 2012, yet BMW’s China import chief
sees the luxury market rising +30%. Our conversations with
China auto officials and dealers leave us confident that
German premium sales can rise at least +15-20% in ’12,
albeit with some negative pricing and mix effects.
Better Visibility in an SUV: Aside from China, premium
SUV demand has been one of the surprises of the past 2
years. Volumes have doubled – and at margins enriching to
mix. The world has only 10 truly premium SUV plants, and
most are at full capacity with c.3-month waiting lists –
driving high earnings visibility. With a third of its sales in
premium-SUVs, we see BMW as the key play here.
Exporters’ Heaven: 2012-13 may be a sweet spot for
European based exporters of high-end branded goods. We
think BMW and Daimler will enjoy a 100bp FX margin
tailwind in ’12-13e – and estimate that each further 10c
move on EURUSD would add c.8% to 2013e EPS. This
means in a scenario of EURUSD at 1.1, margins could rise
as high as 14-15% at BMW (all else being equal).
A Surprising Time to Upgrade: We confess to being
surprised to find ourselves upgrading earnings by up to
15% in the midst of a potential EU recession. However, we
cannot ignore the facts of solid sales momentum and FX
moves. We are now c.10% ahead of consensus for BMW, a
quality cyclical we think worthy of a place in investor
portfolios. BMW upgraded to OW.
Valuation Attracts: ‘12e EV/Sales = 34% at BMW, 28% at
DAI, and 23% at VW (15% ex-trucks). ‘12e PE = 7.8x at
BMW, 8.2x at DAI, 7.4x at VW.
