      Buffett-Backed BYD Targets Toyota

Posted by: Bruce Einhorn on March 08, 2010

Can an automaker from China capitalize on the Toyota recall scandals? With the reputation of the Prius tarnished, the Chinese company backed by Warren Buffett, BYD, could hardly have found a better time to roll out its green cars in the U.S. and Europe. The company attracted Buffett’s attention in 2008 thanks to its green-car strategy, and a BYD spokesman today told Bloomberg News the company will begin selling its electric and hybrid cars in Europe next year. BYD hopes to start sales in the U.S. even earlier, with Chairman Wang Chuanfu saying in January that American drivers might be able to get behind the wheel of BYD cars by yearend. Helping BYD reach its export goals is a new partnership with Daimler; the two companies announced on March 2 plans to cooperate on building electric vehicles.

BYD has plenty of obstacles still to overcome. As the Bloomberg News story points out, the company only sold 48 of its hybrids in China last year and hasn’t even begun selling its E6 electric car in the Chinese market. Still, the Toyota scandal could prove to be a great equalizer for BYD. Before the recalls, many people would have doubted BYD’s ability to close the quality gap with Toyota. Now that the market leader has stumbled so badly, BYD has an easier job selling consumers on the idea there’s not that much difference between itself and mighty Toyota.

BYD EV aims to beat Renault

      Monday, March 08, 2010

The maker of China’s biggest selling car, BYD Auto, is aiming to steal Renault’s thunder by introducing a full-sized electric-only passenger car into the European market during 2011, and in the UK in 2012.

The car in question, the BYD E6, appeared for the first time in Europe at Geneva. At just under 4.5 metres long, it’ll rival VW’s Golf Plus and Seat’s Altea in terms of size. Not in terms of price, though: European pricing has yet to be set for the car, but considering that it’s expected to cost the equivalent of $42,000 US in the Chinese market, UK buyers are unlikely to be able to buy one for less than £25,000 – even allowing for the government’s £5000 EV incentive.

      See the BYD E6 pictures

The BYD E6 is a five-seater with plenty of legroom and a decent-sized boot, but unlike the class norm, it’s powered by a 101bhp, 332lb ft electric motor fed by BYD’s own lithium ion batteries.

Weighing in a 2295kg, the E6 weighs 50 per cent more than most medium-sized MPVs, and performance is modest as a result: 0-62mph takes 14sec, top speed is 87mph. However, the car’s range is more impressive, especially considering its size and weight: BYD Auto claims it’ll do 200 miles between charges, and that its batteries can be given a 50 per cent charge in just 10 minutes from a three-phase quick charging station.

Alongside the E6, BYD Auto will also offer its F3DM to British consumers. This small saloon car became the world’s first plug-in hybrid when it launch in China in late 2008. It uses lithium ion phosphate batteries, and has an electric range of just over 60 miles.

BYD is the one of the world’s largest battery manufacturers, supplying rechargeable cells to mobile phone manufacturers Nokia and Apple. Its expertise in battery manufacture and in electric system control software has proven attractive enough to tempt Daimler into a joint venture, which was also announced at Geneva.

As part of the enterprise, a new Chinese automotive brand will be created, and a range of electric cars design and built exclusively for the Chinese market. BYD will supply batteries, electric motors and control systems for these cars, while Daimler supplies the vehicle architecture.

VW and BYD partner up for electric cars
      March 6, 2010 – 1:45 pm
Last week, Volkswagen and Chinese automaker BYD signed a memorandum of understanding to work together “in the area of electric mobility” and vehicles that use li-ion batteries. BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu (yes, the guy who likes to drink battery fluid) and VW’s Martin Winterkorn signed the MOU in Wolfsburg, Germany. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board for Technical Development at Volkswagen, said in a statement (available after the jump) that, “Hybrids and electric vehicles will play an increasingly important role [for VW], of course. Particularly for the Chinese market, potential partners such as BYD could support us in quickly expanding our activities.”
Perhaps VW was kicked into action by another German automaker taking a look at another EV automaker?

      U-Boot-Batteriezellen werden auf Solarkatamaran erprobt
      06März 2010

      schichten in BYD.

Aber es gibt halt so treue Seelen, die bleiben daran kleben, wie auch
      an Telekom u. a.

Neu in Deinem Artikel scheint mir zu sein "but it plans to increase capacity to a million by the end of 2010".

Chinese hybrid and electric cars for UK
      05 March 2010

BYD (Build Your Dreams), the first Chinese manufacturer to export cars to the UK, won't do it with conventional petrol and diesel models – instead there will be a plug-in hybrid and an all-electric vehicle, probably in 2012.

Both cars – the hybrid F3DM and the electric e6 – went on show for the first time in Europe at the Geneva motor show, with Mr Paul Lin of BYD's export division promising that the UK is an important part of the company's European plans.

'By 2015 we will have a dealer network and a full range of cars in the UK,' he said.

BYD began selling cars only five years ago, but it has years of expertise in battery technology, and is a key supplier to companies such as Apple, Blackberry and Nokia. It is also big in the new energy business, including solar and wind power.

'Our core competence is in new energy and new energy vehicles. We are a battery-based company. That is why we have chosen to launch with a hybrid and an EV,' added Mr Lin.

      F3DM saloon
The F3DM, a mid-sized saloon, is the world's first commercially available dual-mode plug-in hybrid, combining a 1.0-litre petrol engine, a generator and an electric motor with a combined output of 168bhp. It is said to be capable of 60 miles on electric power alone and another 350 miles driven by the petrol engine.

      e6 hatchback
The e6 medium-size hatchback, which is just about to go on sale in China and will also be sold in the US later this year, has an expected range of just over 200 miles in cruising mode, according to BYD.

'BYD is a Hong Kong-listed and -registered company,' said Mr Lin. 'We will begin producing the e6 in right-hand drive for Hong Kong later this year, and after that it will be in the UK.'

      Heading to Europe
Long-term, the company also plans to set up European design and manufacturing facilities. 'It is impossible to keep China as our supply base,' said Mr Lin. 'We will probably introduce a design centre in Europe first, and then a manufacturing plant.'

BYD sold 450,000 cars in China last year – the maximum it can build – but it plans to increase capacity to a million by the end of 2010, and eventually to double that to two million.

It is currently China's sixth-largest auto-maker, but has ambitions to be number one by 2015 and the largest car manufacturer in the world by 2025.
