Hier noch eine weitere News dazu aus dem Wall Street Journal
Iron ore mining in the Labrador Trough region of Canada has been a hard sell recently.
Cliffs Natural Resources saCLF +1.37%id mid-February that it was postponing an expansion of its Bloom Lake mine in the region, while Rio Tinto failed to find a buyer for its majority stake in Iron Ore Company of Canada, or IOC. On top of that, iron-ore price have been tumbling toward two-year lows.
Step forward Michael O’Keeffe to champion the region’s prospects. The former GlencoreGLNCY +1.01% executive is chairman of Australia-listed Champion Iron Ltd.CIA.AU +14.86%, which wants to build a mine producing more than 9 million tons of iron ore annually to supply European steelmakers. On Friday, he said the Quebec government’s commitment of up to 20 million Canadian dollars (US$18 million) toward a feasibility study on a new rail link connecting iron ore mines in the Labrador Trough with ports could be a catalyst for sentiment around the region to improve.
“People will start to view the assets differently,” he told MoneyBeat. “They were distressed assets before with a high cost of infrastructure and a falling iron ore price. A new rail link would make the assets much more economic.”
Investors are understandably wary of the region right now. Cliffs Natural Resources said earlier this year that it costs up to $90 to produce a ton of iron ore at Bloom Lake, which it acquired three years ago for $4.9 billion. That’s barely below the current iron ore price, which closed down 0.3% at $94.30/ton on Thursday.
Still, Mr. O’Keeffe has a track record of buying mining assets at the bottom of the commodities cycle, having turned Mozambique-focused Riversdale Mining from a tiny coal explorer into a producer bought by Rio Tinto for nearly 4.0 billion Australian dollars (US$3.7 billion) in 2011.
Mr. O’Keeffe said the results of the feasibility study on the rail link should be known around the end of this year. A positive outcome would let Champion Iron intensify efforts to find a strategic partner and raise additional funds to develop its Fire Lake North mine ahead of a 2018 target for first production. He thinks iron ore from Fire Lake North could be sold at around $45/ton free-on-board.
Other companies in the Labrador Trough that could benefit from a new rail link include Alderon Iron Ore Corp.ADV.T 0.00%, New Millennium Iron and Adriana Resources Inc.ADI.V -10.81% Currently, there are two rail lines in the area operated by ArcelorMittalMT +1.33% and IOC.
