      SEPTEMBER 12, 2017
Consumer-to-consumer commerce is experiencing something of a renaissance – particularly in the digital realm.

The internet’s potential to facilitate C2C commerce was first demonstrated back in the mid-1990s, when platforms like Craigslist and eBay emerged. But it didn’t take long for the focus to shift to larger organisations, with the efficiencies and reliability they bring, and B2C commerce took center stage.

But recent trends suggest another change is in the offing. With today’s abundance of smartphones and social connectivity, it’s easier than ever to snap a photo and say goodbye to that collection of 90s VHS tapes you never watch anymore, or that pair of good leather shoes that never actually fit you. The result: a new golden age in C2C commerce.

Asia in particular has welcomed the arrival of this new trend. In Japan, Rakuten’s presence in an expanding industry continues to grow, with a recent announcement that annualized C2C sales are approaching 100 billion yen. The company burst onto the C2C scene with its own flea market app back in 2014, called Rakuma, allowing users in Japan to sell items directly to other users through the platform. After two years of strong growth and expansion into Taiwan with Rakuma, the acquisition of Fril, the C2C fashion app that wildly over-indexes with female millennials, placed Rakuten firmly on the map as an industry leader in this

Rakuten bridges gap to Japanese online consumer

      30/10/2017 By Lucien Joppen

In Alibaba and Amazon’s shadow, Japanese Rakuten Ichiba is quickly developing. Several Western chains are using the platform to sell their products to Japanese online consumers.

      Profitable
Rakuten Ichiba (loosely translaed into “Optimist”, what's in a name?) has been around for twenty years, three years Amazon’s junior, but still two years older than Alibaba. It would do it justice to just label it as an internet retailer: it allows current retailers to attract Japanese online consumers and foreign online shoppers can order Japanese products through Rakuten. However, the company has more than this gateway: it is active in plenty of industries, including banking, trael, messaging, e-books and more.

Over the course of the past twenty years, the owner and founder Hiroshi Mikitani turned Rakuten, with the help of some 14,000 employees, into a company with a 7.2 billion dollar annual turnover and a 350 million dollar profit. An online retailer with profit seems like an anomaly. Nevertheless, a sizeable portion of its profit comes from abroad: ever since it decided to spread its wings in 2005, it acquired several local platforms, including Buy.com (United States), Tradoria (Germany) and PriceMinister (France).

      Another Messaging App Goes Contextual

      By PYMNTS
      Posted on February 24, 2017

Viber, a messaging app, announced on Thursday (Feb. 23) that it will start showing users items that are for sale based on the current chat.

According to a report in Tech Crunch, users of Viber have to opt in by pressing a shopping bag icon at the bottom of the screen. The feature is slated to go live on March 6 in the U.S. and will eventually be launched in other markets outside of the country. In its first iteration, the new shopping function will include a selection of items from categories such as electronics, fashion and home goods.
Viber, which is owned by Rakuten, will get its shopping items from Rakuten.com as well as from 30 other brands, one of which is Macy’s. Viber also plans to have a shopping feature that is focused on deals. In the first stage of the new feature, Viber customers won’t be able to make purchases directly from the messaging app, but that could come in the future.

“We will do purchasing in Viber eventually, but we decided to launch it this way to learn more about how it is used and to get it out there as soon as possible,” said Viber’s Chief Executive Djamel Agaoua in the report. “We are looking to transform Viber into a platform without turning to ‘stupid’ advertising.”

From apps to riches: Viber makes its move into fintech
      by John Kennedy
      2 Dec 2016

With the tap of a finger, Viber users of participating banks will now be able to instantly send and transfer money

Viber’s velocity towards a richer apps future has been given added impetus, through the creation of an automated banking app for the popular messaging platform by Comtrade.

Comtrade is leading the charge in digital transformation for players like Ryanair, and is now working with Viber to bring automated banking to smartphones through a chatbot.

In recent weeks, Viber COO Michael Shmilov told Siliconrepublic.com that the company, which is owned by Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten, sees its future in providing richer services within its platform.
