Hikari shares plummet after cell phone agent collapses
REUTERS in Tokyo
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Shares in beleaguered Japanese Internet investor and mobile telephone subscription agent Hikari Tsushin have plummeted after its 10th-largest franchise cell telephone agent filed for bankruptcy.
Advance International, in which Hikari has invested about 580 million yen (HK$42.44 million), mostly as bonds, became the third Hikari agent to fail when it filed for bankruptcy, a Hikari spokesman said yesterday.
Following the announcement, Hikari`s shares fell their 1,000 yen daily limit, or 16.39 per cent, to close at 5,100 yen, with sell orders left unfilled due to a lack of buyers. The shares were trading at 6,440 yen before the news.
Hikari`s shares have fallen 97.88 per cent since peaking at 241,000 yen on February 15, due to a prolonged slump in its mainstay mobile telephone subscription business and doubts about its Internet strategy.
Tsuyoshi Segawa, general manager at Sakura Securities` equity derivatives division, said investors should not interpret Advance`s failure as a sign that Hikari was doomed, but should focus on its restructuring plans.
"We shouldn`t view this news so negatively." Mr Segawa said.
"Hikari is doing what it can to survive, although we shouldn`t look at it as the same company that once enjoyed a high-flying share price."
Also making investors edgy was a Financial Times report yesterday that two vice-presidents of Hikari Tsushin Capital, a wholly owned venture capital unit, had resigned.
The report said up to 20 of the unit`s 60 employees had left due to disputes over a future strategy for the fund after the collapse in the group`s share price.
The resignations signalled potential conflict with the parent company as the vice-presidents had suggested the unit become more independent from the parent and asked Hikari president Yasumitsu Shigeta to open the fund to outside investors, the newspaper said.
Hikari said the unit had only one vice-president, Hiroshi Matsuda, and he had not resigned. However, about 10 employees were expected to leave.

wieder kaufen
