Neue TIMELESS Analyse

Asia`s Hub for the Internet Age Takes Off
Hong Kong, Asia`s business hub, is seeing a surge in companies investing in information technology, the Internet and e-commerce.
As a market-based economy with a free information flow, vast trading networks, an advanced IT infrastructure and unmatched connections to the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong is in poll position to become Asia`s premier Internet and e-commerce hub, analysts say.
While the private sector is leading the charge with investments of billions of dollars, the government is facilitating the process by enhancing the legal infrastructure. Legislation enacted in January renders digitally transmitted signatures legally binding, and Hongkong Post (the post office) is soon to launch public key services that will verify digital signatures and allow for electronic transactions of the highest security.
Hong Kong is already home to Pacific Century CyberWorks, which had a stock market value of US$21 billion in January. With an appetite for deal-making and investments totalling US$500 million in 30 technology companies, it could soon be one of the world`s biggest Internet conglomerates, according to The Economist.
"Hong Kong has many factors in its favour as an Internet hub," said Dong Tao, senior economist with Credit Suisse First Boston, pointing in particular to Hong Kong`s entrepreneurial flair, flexibility, and ability to attract human capital and financial resources. "Once the SAR`s medium-sized companies have embraced the electronic revolution, Hong Kong will be not only ahead of Singapore, but also ahead of Japan as an Internet hub."
Hong Kong`s secretary for technology and broadcasting K C Kwong pointed out that while the majority of Internet sites are in English, demand for Chinese language and culture sites will increase as China embraces the Internet.
"The bilingual abilities of our people and their feel for the world market are just two of the strengths we can build on, " he emphasised.
Among the companies making substantial investments in the technology sector are Hong Kong property companies which are rapidly diversifying their activities as Hong Kong`s economy restructures.
New World Telephone, an 88 per cent-owned subsidiary of property company New World Development, announced in December that it had signed an agreement with Web giant Yahoo! to develop Internet-related services for its mobile telephone network. Sun Hung Kai Properties has formed an e-commerce subsidiary and strategic alliances with Microsoft and Sun Microsystems. Sino Land has taken a strategic stake in mainland portal NetBig.com.
"In the 1970s Hong Kong`s entrepreneurs were in the textile industry: that was where the money was. In the 1980s they made the big move into property. Now entrepreneurial companies see the future in technology," says Morgan Stanley Dean Witter property analyst Rob Hart.
"Hong Kong companies are moving on this quickly. Property companies in particular have a lot of cash and low debt-equity ratios. They want to make that money work."
Internet investment is seen by many companies as a way to diversify an economy traditionally reliant on property. Sino Land, for instance, has set up a venture-capital company to provide money to start-up technology businesses as part of its planned $1 billion (US$130 million) diversification programme. Henderson Land Development has also announced a plan to put HK$1 billion into information technology and telecommunications projects.
"In terms of content and business we are already ahead of most other economies in having the infrastructure and the environment for electronic business," argued Mr Kwong. "People are really excited about Internet business locally: all the major companies in Hong Kong are investing in Internet business."

Making The Connection
SINCE last July, software developers in Hong Kong have had a new, collective voice through the establishment of the Information and Software Industry Assn (ISIA). "Software companies in Hong Kong were not very connected -- everyone was working on their own. We needed to find a way to help ourselves, to discuss industry problems and approach the government," says Satti Wong, council member in charge of publicity and promotion for ISIA.
Association chairman CS Ng says: "Hong Kong is one of the traditional centres for finance and information exchange, thanks to its status as a free port and its strategic location within Asia-Pacific. Deregulation of the telecommunications industry means Hong Kong now has more bandwidth outside the SAR than [mainland] China in terms of Internet capacity. In order to leverage these advantages, we need to have a good information technology sector so that Hong Kong can become the digital hub of Asia and this will support economic growth in the future.
"One of the objectives of ISIA is to help the local IT industry to grow outside of Hong Kong by forming alliances and providing a communication forum for members to help them to compete more effectively."
ISIA was set up with help from the Software Industry Information Centre, which is managed by the Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC). The association has about 60 full members, mostly local software developers and systems and solutions integrators. Wong says: "These types of companies are our focus, but we also welcome international members, while local ISPs can become associate members."
Honorary advisors to ISIA include computer science representatives from the Hong Kong Venture Capital Assn, Hong Kong Industrial Technology Centre, HKPC and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC), as well as the Legislative Council member for the IT functional constituency and, from mainland China, representatives of the Information Technology Industry Assn and the China Software Industry Assn.
ISIA wants to raise the profile of the information and software sector in Hong Kong among the general public, the business community and the government, and enhance competitiveness of the industry in the local and global markets. Although IT companies are "hot" at the moment, Wong says it is only in the past few months that they have been seen as attractive in Hong Kong.
"In terms of raising money and expanding, IT firms are now in a favourable situation, and are doing well. We have the opportunity, but we don`t know how well our local software developers can deal with it. We are technical people, not business-oriented. It is a great opportunity, but we have faced hardship since the 70s until very recently -- before nobody would invest in software companies -- because it is a product that people can`t touch or see."
Wong notes that Hong Kong software developers and systems integrators have expertise related to other industries in Hong Kong, such as finance, cargo transportation, manufacturing and trading.
Council member Alex Au Yeung says that according to an HKPC survey, there are about 600 software developers in Hong Kong. "Around 200 of these are in-house developers associated with big corporations. Ninety percent of the rest are defined as small, with less than 20 workers," Au Yeung says. These are the companies that ISIA aims to help.
"The demand for software and IT is growing. ISIA can link up the local IT companies and get their opinions across to the government, and get them to understand the industry better so more appropriate policies can be developed," he adds.
Ng notes that Hong Kong has always been competitive -- for example the mobile phone market is one of the most competitive in the world. "In order to support a competitive situation, corporations need to improve efficiency and quality and that means using IT. We already have some world-class IT solutions, such as the horse-betting system, which is one of the most advanced anywhere, and the very successful Octopus transportation card system. If we can leverage these successes and turn them into products and promote overseas, we can become a key IT exporting centre."
Wong says because of their small size, independent local firms have found it difficult to compete for major projects. "The government is outsourcing a lot of projects, but they are going to large publicly listed companies and foreign companies. We don`t get the opportunity to say hey, we are good at this. At ISIA we would like to provide members with more business opportunities, perhaps by making alliances between different companies with the required software. ISIA would do the matchmaking," she says.
Industry standards are a very important area of concern and the association aims to bring about improvements through the Quality Assurance sub-committee. Au Yeung says ISIA is working closely with HKPC on a software quality-assurance model designed especially for small local software houses, which offers an alternative to the higher-cost QA models, such as ISO and CMM.
"Quality is the most important issue in the software industry now, it is the basic criteria for the customer. With more subcontracting of work becoming available, if there is no industry standard it will be very difficult for us to outsource," says Au Yeung.
Further down the road, ISIA aims to promote and encourage co-operation among information and software organisations on the mainland. Wong says: "China is a huge market and our locally developed products should be good for the China market. ISIA is trying to build marketing channels together with the TDC, to go into China and introduce Hong Kong software products."
ISIA has already organised seminars for members, including one on outsourcing with the government`s IT Services Department and another on venture funds, which focused on the new Growth Enterprise Market. Members will also be able to join exhibitions under the ISIA umbrella, including the Shenzhen Hi-Tech Fair `99, on the mainland, and a mainland road show organised by TDC.

Kurserholung.
Timeless wurde masslos hochgepusht, entstandene Kursgewinne werden
von den Chinesen hemmungslos abgeschöpft.
Ich empfehle : Verkauf von Timeless . Neuer Kauf vielleicht in
5 Jahren sinnvoll !.

hallo luschenhansi

Moet? Aber klar!

Ich halte meine 30000 zu 0.64E. Ein Jahr GEM gestehe ich einfach zu.
Was heißt hier pushen ? Doch nicht von diesen europäischen boards aus ! Da überschätzt aber einer gewaltig die postings.
Gewinne absahnen ?

Wer allerdings dabei sein will
Wer allerdings dabei sein will

Also schön freundlich bleiben.

die „Study Report on China’s ERP Software Market in
Raum China gibt, wovon 285 Kunden in China selbst
beheimatet sind.
IDG schätzt, dass der Gesamtmarkt für ERP
Software in China einen Wert von 152 Mio. US-Dollar

Wer allerdings langfristig denkt - 2 - 3 Jahre - sollte danach
Was meint Ihr ?
Gruss fama

zwecks Imobilien kauf usw....
Sondern in Zukunft?? 1-2Jahre
