In that vein, consider Kopin (KOPN, news, msgs). There are at least two reasons to like this $1.5 billion semiconductor firm based in Massachusetts.

First, it is one of the world`s leading suppliers of HBT wafers made from InGaP and gallium arsenide (GaAs) to all the leading-edge component makers supplying the world`s wireless and fiber-optic buildout. These HBTs (it stands for heterojunction bipolar transistor) are an increasingly critical component of the power amplifier circuitry that enable wireless handsets to generate very clear signals while drawing very little power. As the CDMA technology pioneered by Qualcomm (QCOM, news, msgs) advances worldwide (it`s expected to be used in 80% of phones by the end of the decade), analysts believe that InGaP and GaAs HBTs will be required more and more due to their extreme "linearity" -- a quality that allows extremely high-frequency signals to carry data with minimal distortion.

This makes Kopin a key arms supplier to the vast, worldwide wireless war. No matter whether chip makers Conexant Systems (CNXT, news, msgs), TriQuint Semiconductor (TQNT, news, msgs), Anadigics (ANAD, news, msgs), Alpha Industries (AHAA, news, msgs) or Celeritek start getting the lion`s share of design wins from Ericsson (ERICY, news, msgs), Qualcomm and potentially Nokia (NOK, news, msgs), analysts believe they`ll have to buy most of their HBT wafers from Kopin. According to J.D. Abouchar, a senior analyst at Preferred Capital Markets in San Francisco, "it`s incredibly hard to create coatings on these wafers; they are atoms thick per layer." Abouchar says he thinks the market for these products is experiencing a very substantial ramp in demand both in wireless and high-speed fiber-optic network applications (up to OC-192), and that Kopin -- which just greatly expanded its manufacturing capacity with the proceeds from a secondary stock offering -- is on the brink of "being huge."

But that`s actually only half the Kopin story. The firm is also the world`s leading maker of the miniature color LCDs showing up everywhere lately. Kopin currently sells them under the CyberDisplay brand name to manufacturers ranging from JVC in Japan to Siemens in Germany and Motorola (MOT, news, msgs) in the United States. The wide range of applications for the CyberDisplay is growing longer by the day, ranging from digital video cameras to cell phones, palm-sized computers and the coming wave of wearable computers.

Elan Danon, who covers the company for LaSalle Securities in Chicago, agrees that the company is "positioned beautifully" in at least three fast-expanding fields. "If you`re looking for stocks with explosive growth potential, they play in the right markets," he says.

Abouchar foresees revenues for Kopin this year at $87 million, and $203 million next year; and earnings of 45 cents per share this year and $1.15 next year. The stock was up fivefold last year, but with this kind of momentum, it`s fairly easy to see how the stock could grow at least another five- to tenfold if it executes well and the economy stays healthy.
