um 16,2 Prozent auf 31-3/8 Dollar.

01.09.2000 Viant und Scient stürzen ab nach Downgrades

Die Aktien der Internetconsultingfirmen Viant (Nasdaq: VIAN) und Scient
(Nasdaq: SCNT) leiden heute unter Herunterstufungen gleich mehrerer Analystenhäuser.
Anlass für die vielen negativen Meinungen war die von
Viant gestern nachbörslich herausgegebene Gewinnwarnung. Das Unternehmen rechnet für
das dritte Quartal mittlerweile nur noch mit einem Verlust,
während die Konsensschätzungen einen Gewinn von 8 Cent pro
Aktie erwarteten.



Daraufhin senkte Merrill Lynch das Rating für Viant
von "long-term buy" auf "long-term accumulate" und auf "intermediate-term
neutral" von "intermediate-term accumulate". Merrill stufte Viant-Konkurrent Scient von
"buy" auf "accumulate" herunter.



ING Barings senkte das Viant-Rating von
"strong buy" auf "buy" und setze auch Umsatz- und
Gewinnschätzungen herunter. Scient wurde von "buy" auf "hold" herabgestuft,
da ähnliche Firmen plötzlich ein Nachlassen der Nachfrage erleben
würden.



Goldman Sachs nahm die Viant-Aktien von der "Empfehlungsliste" und
stuft sie nun nur noch mit "market outperform" ein.
Den Gewinn pro Aktie für 2000 sieht man jetzt
nur noch bei 6 statt bei 32 Cent. Und
zu guter Letzt stufte SG Cowen Scient und Viant
von "buy" auf "neutral" herunter.



Unter der Flut der Abstufungen
brechen die Aktien geradezu ein. Das VIAN-Papier verliert 38,3
Prozent auf 8,6 Dollar, während Scient 18,2 Prozent auf
22,1 US-Dollar verliert.

der Deutschen Bank bekannt. Unter anderem wird Scient den
von der Deutschen Bank unterstützten e-millenium 2 Asia-Pacific Fond,

Entwicklung zur Seite stehen. Scient klettern um über 10,2
Prozent auf knapp 48 Dollar.

Scient to Lay Off 25% of Its Work Force,
Warns of Loss for Fiscal Third Quarter

SAN FRANCISCO -- Scient Corp., amid an industrywide downturn in the market for Internet professional services and mounting competition from traditional consulting firms, said it will lay off 25% of its work force and warned of a loss for its fiscal third quarter.
The consulting company blamed weakness in demand for its services on the shrinking of budgets for enterprise projects and the lack of funds at dot-com companies. In a conference call with analysts, Scient Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bob Howe also said the Big Five accounting firms were undercutting Scient`s prices by as much as 40% on projects. "They appear to be uneconomic to us," he said. As a result, Scient will shut down its offices in Austin, Texas, and Silicon Valley and eliminate 460 jobs, he said. "We decided that we need to rightsize the business," Mr. Howe said. "Both Austin and Silicon Valley represented large dot-com markets which have not materialized."
For the three months ending Dec. 31, Scient said it expects to post a loss of about $13 million, or 16 cents a share, before charges and gains. Analysts surveyed by First Call/Thomson Financial were expecting the company to earn eight cents a share. Scient also curtailed its revenue projections by a third to about $80 million from $112 million. It also plans to take a charge of $40 million to $45 million in the third quarter and will revise downward its projections for its fourth quarter ending in March and its fiscal year 2001.
"That`s a sign of the times," said Adam Frisch, an analyst at Warburg Dillon Read LLC in New York. Scient`s move to cut its revenue projections, trim its work force and shut down offices is in line with what its peers such as MarchFirst Inc. already have initiated, Mr. Frisch said. He added, "it does come as somewhat of a surprise for people close to the industry because Scient is believed to be one of the better-managed companies."
Scient was one of the once-highflying companies that benefited directly from the dot-com euphoria, and its stock was trading as high as $133.75 in early March before the dot-com shakeout. As of 4 p.m. on the Nasdaq Stock Market Wednesday, Scient shares were down 69 cents at $4.50. The stock was trading at $5.03 after hours, following the announcement.



Scient plunges on lower forecast

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Shares of Scient plunged more than 43 percent Thursday after the Internet consultant announced a restructuring that would throw hundreds of employees out of work, citing weakening business performance, more competition and a broad economic slowdown.

After the market closed Wednesday, Scient (SCNT: news, msgs) cut its forecast for third-quarter revenue to $80 million, which would translate into a per-share loss of 16 cents, before charges. Analysts surveyed by First Call currently expect earnings of 8 cents a share.
Scient`s stock dropped $1.97 to $2.53 and is off about 98 percent from it March high of $133.75.
The San Francisco-based firm will cut 460 jobs, or a quarter of its 1,850 employees, and close its offices in Silicon Valley and Austin, Texas.
For the restructuring, the company will take a charge of $40 million to $45 million in the third quarter.
Scient said it expects to save $60 million in 2001 from the restructuring.
Scient`s moves come amid a sector-wide slowdown among Internet consultants and are similar to what competitors such as MarchFirst (MRCH: news, msgs) have announced in recent weeks.
Credit Suisse First Boston analyst David Sturtz, maintaining a "hold" rating on the company`s stock, said in a note to clients that he believes Scient "has a monumental task ahead in weaning itself from a steady diet of dot-com clients to winning significant contracts within Global 2000. Layoffs and revenue shortfall tarnish the patina on this premier name, and may damage unique company culture."
First Union Securities analyst Edward Caso downgraded Scient to "market perform" from "buy." "While we note the low stock price, we see no upside potential for the foreseeable future," he said in a research note.
