hallo,

Sizing up Cisco
CS First Boston says stock has likely seen bottom
By Susan Lerner, CBS.MarketWatch.com
Last Update: 5:53 PM ET Jan 4, 2001
NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Comments from CS First Boston that Cisco Systems had "likely hit bottom" helped the tech leader to post a gain Thursday even while investors for the most part shunned technology stocks after Wednesday`s rally.
Although they finished the session with only a modest 56 cent, or 1.4 percent, rise at $41.88, it was only after analyst Lissa Bogaty`s early morning comments that the stock moved into the green after trading lower in the pre-market.
"We believe that the stock can move up to the low $50s near term, as investors feel comfortable with the macro picture and project its current multiple onto next year`s earnings," Bogaty told clients. And she thinks the stock will move above that range as Cisco (CSCO: news, msgs) proves that it is less cyclically sensitive than some are worrying about and a higher relative premium is re-asserted.
"At 2x a 30 percent growth rate, we could revisit a 60x multiple, in our opinion, and move into the mid-$60s over the next nine months and hit our price target by the end of the year," Bogaty said.
The company`s fiscal 2001 second quarter is in good shape so far, Bogaty said, citing positive recent channel checks of several suppliers and one partner who she said have seen no slowdown in growth this quarter. However, she noted, some of the growth is likely related to shipping backlog and that she does not believe visibility will be as high when the company posts its numbers Feb. 6.
Bogaty, who is forecasting earnings of 19 cents a share for the quarter, in line with the consensus estimate of analysts reporting to Multexnet, said the key to her analysis is the belief that estimates are solid even though she called the company`s revenue growth targets "lofty" and the high end of the 50 to 60 percent target range "unlikely" in this environment.
"We believe that even if the company does not raise its revenue guidance, or falls slightly shy, the bottom line numbers are solid," Bogaty wrote in her research note. This, she said, is thanks to a cushion provided by the company`s high variable cost operating model and an improving environment with respect to component shortages, which alleviates some gross margin pressure.
Risks
The company is not out of the woods this quarter on the components side, however. Bogaty said she was hearing that there are "still some issues" that could be causing imbalances, inefficiencies and could hamper shipments of more popular products.
And what if the market reverses sentiment again?
Assuming a worst-case scenario, Bogaty believes the stock could potentially trade at its historically low discount to growth when in 1995 and early 1996 Cisco traded at about one-third to one-half its growth rate. Applying a 20x multiple, this results in a bottom in the mid-$20s for the stock, Bogaty said.
However, she assigns "a very low probability" of the stock visiting these levels and said she believes the risk/reward is very favorable even after Wednesday`s rally.
