Megatrend Ethanol

Es gibt auf amerikanischen Straßen derzeit schon 4,5 Millionen „Schnapsautos“. Also PKWs, die nicht nur mit Benzin, sondern auch mit Ethanol fahren können. Und das sind keine Liebhaberwagen, die erheblich mehr kosten. In den USA stellen die großen Namen wie Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, Chevrolet und General Motors solche Schnapsautos serienmäßig her. Allerdings: Es gibt in den USA erst rund 600 Tankstellen, an denen diese Schnapsautos Ethanol tanken können. Und viele dieser Tankstellen sind noch nicht einmal für die Öffentlichkeit gedacht, sondern beispielsweise nur für Firmenfahrzeuge. Zum Vergleich: In Brasilien können Schnapsautos in 29.000 Tankstellen (von insgesamt 31.000 Tankstellen) versorgt werden.

Meiner Ansicht nach ist es nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis auch der Rest der Welt mitbekommt, was in Brasilien bereits bekannt ist: Ethanol kann Benzin ersetzen, Ethanol kann aus nachwachsenden Rohwaren (Zucker, Mais) hergestellt werden, ist umweltfreundlicher, verringert die Abhängigkeit von den Erdöl exportierenden Staaten….

Bleiben wir mal bei den USA: Im Jahr 2004 konnte das dort aus Mais hergestellte Ethanol das US-Handelsbilanzdefizit um 5,1 Milliarden Dollar verringern. Denn durch dieses selbst produzierte Ethanol verringerte sich der Importbedarf an Öl um 143 Millionen Barrel. Genauer gesagt: Das US-Handelsbilanzdefizit hat sich nicht verringert, sondern ist gestiegen, weil die Amerikaner so viele chinesische Waren gekauft haben. Aber ohne die Ethanol-Produktion im eigenen Land wäre das Handelsbilanzdefizit noch 5,1 Milliarden Dollar größer geworden.

Es gibt unterschiedliche Berechnungen zur Energie-Effizienz von Ethanol. Mir liegt eine Berechnung vor, derzufolge die Ethanol-Produktion 67 Prozent mehr Energie erzeugt, als für die Herstellung an Einsatz notwendig ist. Aber selbst wenn die Energiebilanz neutral wäre, könnte es sich aus strategischen Gründen lohnen (Abhängigkeit vom Erdöl würde verringert, Umweltschäden verringern sich).

Zum Umweltaspekt (der wird meist gar nicht beachtet, ich finde das aber ein ebenfalls schlagendes Argument für Ethanol): 80 Prozent der Luftverschmutzung in den amerikanischen Städten ist dem Straßenverkehr zu „verdanken“. (Offizielle Zahlen vom amerikanischen „Department of Energy“). Mit Ethanol angetriebene Wagen stoßen erheblich weniger Kohlenwasserstoff und Benzol aus. Und während ÖL Hunderdtausende Jahre braucht, bis es entstanden ist….kann Ethanol in 13 Stunden hergestellt werden. Und das aus Rohwaren, die nachwachsen…wie eben Zucker und Mais.

Aus diesen Gründen rufe ich hiermit den „Megatrend Ethanol“ aus. Von dem läßt sich auf zwei Arten profitieren:
1. durch Zertifikate auf die „Inputs“ der Ethanol-Produktion, und
2. durch Aktien von Ethanol-Produzenten

Ja, ich weiß, Punkt zwei widerspricht meiner These „Märkte statt Einzeltitel“. Hat aber den Hintergrund, daß es – noch – keine Ethanol-Zertifikate gibt. Solange das nicht der Fall ist, muß ich den Umweg über Aktien von Ethanol-Produzenten gehen.

Mais gegen Sojabohnen

In diesem Monat wird in den USA eine Sudie veröffentlicht laut der Biodiesel aus Sojabohnen mehr nutzbare Energie und weniger Treibhausgase produziert als aus Mais hergestelltes Ethanol. Damit ist Biodiesel aus Sojabohnen wertvoller und unterstützenswerter. Zu diesem Schluss kommt die University of Minnesota, wie die New York Times berichtet.

Die Studie der University of Minnesota und dem St. Olaf College schaut auf die Folgen für die Umwelt bei der Produktion von Ethanol aus Mais und Sojabohnen. Demnach kann aus Mais-Ethanol 25 % mehr Energie gewonnen werde, als zu seiner Produktion benötig wird. Soja-Biodiesel liefert 93 % mehr Energie als zur Produktion benötigt wird.
Weiterhin werden bei der Ethanolverbrennung 12 % weniger Treibahusgase in die Atmosphäre gepumpt als bei fossilen Brennstoffen, Biodiesel reduziert diese Emmissionen sogar um 41 %.
Die Studie deckt aber auch auf, dass weder Soja noch Mais geeignet sind, eine Alternative zum Öl darzustellen. Dazu müsste Zellulose-Ethanol aus Gras und Getreide gewonnen werden, das nahezu überall wächst.
Die Studie stellt fest, dass es zu Nahrungsversorgungsproblemen komme, wenn man sämtlichen Mais und alle Sojabohnen zur Ethanol und Biodiesel-Gewinnung nutzen würde. Und selbst dann würden Biobrennstoffe nur 12 % des Gasbedarfs und 6 % des Benzinbedarfs der USA decken.

Derzeit ist Ethanol vor allem ein Politikum, der Brennstoff ist derart hoch subventioniert, dass es extrem pofitabel ist, Ethanol herzustellen. Schon werden Stimmen laut, die verlangen, dass die staatliche Förderung von 51 Cents pro Gallone beendet werden müsse.

Die Studie geht auch darauf ein, dass trotz der 12% geringeren Treibhausgasemission die Umeltverträglichkeit nicht gegeben ist. So werden durch die Verbrennung Nitrate, Nitrite und Pestizide frei, die beim Anbau verwendet wurden.

Auch Biodiesel ist nicht wirtschaftlich, heute kostet die Produktion 55 Cents je Liter, 20 % mehr als bei Ethanol. Benzin wurde im Jahr 2005 für durchschnittlich 44 Cents je Liter verkauft.

Analysten sind sich einig, dass Biodiesel aus Umweltschutzgründen besser als Ethanol sei.
Allerdings ist die Ethanolproduktion wesentlich effizienter, aus einem Acre Mais können 420 Gallonen gewonnen werden, aus einem Acre Sojabohnen können nur 60 Gallonen Biodiesel hergestellt werden. Sollte der Bedarf an Biodiesel steigen, dann würden auch die Kosten steigen, so W.Basse, Präsident der AgResource in Chicago.

Das Fazit der Studie ist, dass mit einer prognostizierten Verdopplung des weltweiten Nahrungsbedarfs innerhalb der nächsten 50 Jahre und mit einem noch höheren Bedarf an Treibstoffen, eine große Notwendigkeit besteht, erneuerbare Energien zu finden, die keinen großen Schaden anrichten und die auch nicht im Wettsreit mit der Nahrungsversorgung stehen.

Julia Roberts Joins Earth Biofuels, Inc. as Spokesperson and Advisory Board Member

DALLAS -- Earth Biofuels, Inc. (OTC Bulletin Board: EBOF - News) today announced that actress Julia Roberts will become a spokesperson for the company and will chair the company's newly formed Advisory Board. Ms. Roberts joins fellow Oscar-winner Morgan Freeman and country music legend Willie Nelson in promoting the use of renewable fuels such as Earth Biofuels' biodiesel and ethanol.

Biodiesel is refined from vegetable oils such as soy, canola, and recycled restaurant grease. Today, B20 is the most common and fastest growing biodiesel blend in the United States. It reduces hydrocarbon emissions by 20 percent and carbon monoxide and particulate emissions by 12 percent. Additionally, biodiesel reduces vehicle sulfur emissions on average by 20 percent, plus biodiesel is nontoxic and biodegradable. Biodiesel is the only alternative fuel certified by the Environmental Protection Agency that fulfills the requirements of Section 211 (B) of the Clean Air Act.
