Sun stock rose about $6.50 to $118 before it was halted on Nasdaq for news pending. Sun`s Web site had a headline saying profits rose 85 percent and sales 60 percent in the quarter but did not have more details. Sun officials were not immediately available to comment.

Net income was $510 million, or 30 cents per share, compared with $276 million, or 16 cents per share, during the same quarter last year. Analysts surveyed by First Call expected earnings of 26 cents per share. Revenue was $5.04 billion compared with $3.15 billion during the same quarter last year. Sun shares are halted down $1.38, or 1.2 percent, to $110.

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Sun Microsystems (SUNW.O) Inc., the biggest maker of computers that serve up Web pages, on Wednesday said fiscal first-quarter earnings rose 88 percent as sales soared 60 percent, sending its shares rocketing before trading was halted after the earnings were mistakenly posted on its Web site.
The earnings release was briefly and mistakenly posted on Sun`s Web site and then quickly pulled down. But before that happened, Reuters and other news agencies were able to see that Sun said its net income rose 85 percent, its earnings per share rose 88 percent, and sales rose 60 percent.
No other details were immediately available.
A Sun spokeswoman said that the full earnings release would be distributed shortly, adding that the earnings conference call would take place at the previously scheduled time of 4:30 EDT. She did not yet have an explanation for the early and unscheduled posting of the earnings release, which was slated for distribution after the market closed.
Before word spread to traders and investors, Sun shares were trading at about $108. But once it did, the shares shot up $10 before trading was halted.
In Sun`s fourth quarter, its sales rose 42 percent. Its sales are vastly outpacing those of rivals International Business Machines Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co.
The consensus earnings estimate for Sun was 26 cents a share, according to First Call/Thomson Financial. Reut12:42 10-18-00
