      @commander,

      Aktien kaufen eventuell ?????

      Artisan Entertainment
      Company Profile

      The Company

Artisan Entertainment Inc. is the leading independent producer and distributor of theatrical, television and home entertainment product. The Company coordinates its business activities through two wholly owned operating divisions, Artisan Pictures and Artisan Home Entertainment. With a prestigious and prolific library of more than 7,000 titles, Artisan continues to build a stable of commercially and critically successful entertainment properties that are recognized worldwide.

Since its inception in 1997, Artisan has flourished through the adherence to a philosophy dedicated to maximizing the value of existing assets, strategic growth, innovative acquisitions and the containment of costs. Artisan will continue to aggressively explore opportunities that build upon the Company`s broad canvas of businesses by adding complementary product that can flow through its existing infrastructure.
Because of Artisan`s unique position in the marketplace, The Company has earned the distinction as one of the last truly independent entertainment entities capable of successfully producing, marketing and distributing wide release films as well as specialty programming designed for a niche platform release. Artisan is also rapidly becoming a leading producer of made-for-television movies, miniseries and series programming for the broadcast and cable networks.

Artisan`s roots are entrenched as a pioneer in the home entertainment marketplace. The Company has continued to enhance its status as a market leader through expansion of this core asset and through its commitment to, and early adoption of, the DVD format. Artisan`s vast film library includes titles from such historic companies as Republic Pictures, Carolco and Hallmark Entertainment. Because of the caliber, quality and breadth of Artisan`s library, the Company`s home entertainment division is able to leverage its catalog and use its marketing muscle to deliver entertainment software directly to more than 12,000 retail stores nationwide.

Artisan maintains production and distribution agreements with such respected companies as Marvel Entertainment, Alliance Atlantis, Showtime Networks, Mattel Inc., The Discovery Channel and Scholastic Entertainment.

      The History

Artisan Entertainment is led by CEO Amir J. Malin, who oversees the day-to-day activities and strategic planning for the Company, along with Artisan Entertainment President & COO Ken Schapiro. Artisan`s theatrical film and television operations are carried out under the supervision of Artisan Entertainment Vice-Chairman Robert Cooper.

Malin`s tenure with Artisan dates back to 1997 when the company was known as LIVE Entertainment. LIVE managed a small slate of films and a video library that was financially unstable and operating at a loss. With an eye toward making provocative and daring films, while also building a solid home entertainment library designed to provide a constant source of revenue, a new company, Artisan Entertainment, was formed.

Artisan immediately began producing and acquiring some of the most intelligent, cutting-edge and controversial independent films in the business. At the same time, the company also embarked on a campaign to selectively purchase companies with undervalued film assets. This acquisition strategy formed Artisan`s working backbone - one of the most substantial and lucrative film libraries in the industry.

In just five years, Artisan has emerged as the leading privately held independent film and television company in the industry. Artisan is currently owned by a group of professional investors along with entities holding minority interests in the Company, including Canadian broadcaster CTV (a division of Bell Globemedia); Richland, Gordon & Company; Allen & Company, Inc.; and the management team. The Artisan Entertainment Board of Directors is comprised of Chairman Geoffrey Rehnert, Co-CEO of the Audax Group; Vice-Chairman Al Gordon, President of Richland, Gordon & Company; Marc Wolpow, Co-CEO of the Audax Group; Ivan Fecan, President & CEO of Bell Globemedia; John Josephson, a Managing Director of Allen & Company, Inc.; and Artisan`s Amir J. Malin, Robert Cooper and Ken Schapiro.

      The Pictures Division

TThe Artisan Pictures division is run by respected industry veteran Robert Cooper. In addition to his position as a Vice-Chairman of Artisan Entertainment, Cooper serves as CEO of Artisan Pictures. Cooper is responsible for the development, production, marketing and distribution of the Company`s annual slate of 10-12 theatrical films as well as Artisan`s television operations. In addition, Artisan Pictures operates Landscape Pictures, a wholly owned independent production entity that develops higher budgeted motion pictures for production and distribution by third-party major studios.

Artisan Pictures continues to nurture its reputation as the preeminent one-stop shop for leading filmmakers. The company offers talent the resources and independence to make profitable quality films. Directors and producers trust Artisan`s artistic integrity as well as its ingenuity in creating new marketing and distribution trends. This is apparent in many of Artisan`s films, including The Blair Witch Project, which became the most profitable film ever made and redefined movie marketing. Artisan`s Requiem for a Dream (Academy Award® nominee for Best Actress) was released un-rated to prevent edits that would have compromised the director`s vision. In the summer of 2001, Artisan Pictures released Made, starring Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn. The film went on to become one of the independent hits of the year. The Company is also committed to showcasing works from respected documentary filmmakers, including successes such as Startup.com from D.A. Pennebaker and The Buena Vista Social Club from filmmaker Wim Wenders. Other Artisan releases have included Darren Aronofsky`s Pi, Robert Altman`s Dr. T and the Women, Steven Soderbergh`s The Limey, National Lampoon’s Van Wilder, Roger Dodger and Standing in the Shadows of Motown.

Upcoming Artisan Pictures titles include the comedy film Boat Trip starring Academy Award® winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. and the rousing music-themed documentary Amandla! A Revolution in Four Part Harmony. Artisan is currently ramping up its production activities with three highly anticipated films, Havana Nights: Dirty Dancing 2, the second installment in the Dirty Dancing franchise, which is being co-produced with Miramax Films, and The Punisher and Iron Fist, both based on popular Marvel comic book series. These two films are the first to be developed under Artisan`s joint venture with Marvel Enterprises, which will bring several of Marvel`s world-renowned superheroes and villains to life via original productions for theatrical, home video and Internet distribution.

In addition to Artisan Pictures theatrical releases, the Company operates FHE Pictures, its theatrical distribution label that focuses on family oriented films. FHE Pictures recently released the animated feature Jonah - A VeggieTales Movie. The film is based on the widely successful line of VeggieTales products from Big Idea Productions. Following the success of Jonah – A VeggieTales Movie, FHE continues its relationship with Big Idea on the upcoming animated The Bob and Larry Movie, which is currently in pre-production and slated for release in 2005.

Artisan Television, which also operates under the aegis of Artisan Pictures, develops and produces made-for-television movies, series programming, and miniseries for nearly all of the major broadcast networks and cable channels. The Company’s most recent made-for-television movie “RFK,” aired on the FX network this past August. Current television projects in development include a highly anticipated television movie regarding the Enron scandal, a two hour made-for-television movie dramatizing the story of American Taliban fighter John Walker Lindh, and “Ozzie, Harriett and the Nelson Family” a made-for-television movie about the famous sitcom family. In January of 2002, the FX network aired Artisan Television`s "Sins of the Father," which delivered the largest viewing audience of any entertainment program in the network`s history. Similar results were realized for the CBS network in October 2001, when it aired Artisan Television`s "Surviving Gilligan`s Island." The show became the network`s highest rated Sunday night movie in almost two years. The division currently has projects established at NBC, CBS, ABC, Court TV, VH1, Disney Channel, USA Network, TNT, Sci-Fi Channel and Lifetime.

Artisan recently renewed its agreement with Showtime Networks to license all of Artisan Pictures` theatrical releases for domestic pay television through December 2008. The Company also maintains a pay-per-view distribution agreement with IN DEMAND, the largest pay-per-view network in the nation. Through this agreement, Artisan has become the only independent entertainment company to posses a large-scale output pact for its product on a major pay-per-view network.

To support the company`s presence in the international marketplace, Artisan has output agreements with leading foreign distributors such as Alliance Atlantis in Canada, Momentum Pictures in the U.K., Highlight Communications in Germany and Lauren Films in Spain. Artisan`s product is sold in other international territories through Summit Entertainment. These international alliances greatly increase Artisan`s brand worldwide and are a key element in the Company`s expanding slate of films

      The Home Entertainment Division

Artisan`s Home Entertainment division is run by President Steve Beeks. The division is focused on extracting maximum value out of its ever-expanding catalog of over 7,000 titles. Artisan`s broad distribution system cuts out all third parties by delivering its product directly to over 12,000 retail stores in the United States, allowing the Company to directly manage the distribution and marketing process.

Artisan`s library was developed through the acquisition of companies including Republic Pictures, Vestron and Carolco. Artisan Home Entertainment controls a wide spectrum of films ranging from Academy Award®-winning classics and action adventure blockbusters to cult favorites. The Company is also a leading distributor of health and fitness videos from such brands as Denise Austin and Yoga Fusion.

Titles in the Artisan library include: On Golden Pond, The Piano, The Crying Game, Sophie`s Choice, It`s a Wonderful Life, The Bells of St. Mary`s, Rio Grande, Reservoir Dogs, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Dirty Dancing, Young Guns and High Noon.

Family Home Entertainment (FHE) is the family and education arm of Artisan`s Home Entertainment unit. FHE distributes product from such brands as Mattel`s Barbie, including the smash hit featuring the beloved doll in her first-ever feature film, Barbie In the Nutcracker and the recently released hit film Barbie as Rapunzel; Scholastic Entertainment`s Clifford The Big Red Dog; The Discovery Channel -- which includes the Animal Planet and Learning Channel brands; Hallmark Home Entertainment; and The Hallmark Hall of Fame
      .

      The Offices

Artisan Entertainment currently employs approximately 200 full-time employees, maintaining its headquarters and a private screening room in Santa Monica, California, with an additional office in the TriBeCa section of New York City

For year’s big name companies such as Universal, Warner Brothers, and 20th Century fox have dominated the entertainment industry. By signing big name talent and writers to exclusive contracts, these major companies kept movie stars on their movies and at the same time prevented competition from arising. But now in the age of technology a new company is rising, one that may someday rival that of 20th Century, or MGM. This new company, with the aid of original movie scripts and forward view of new technology such as DVD, is now the largest independent entertainment company in North America. This company is Artisan Entertainment.

Artisan Entertainment was founded in 1997. After changing their name from Live Entertainment, the company quickly aligned itself with major motion picture companies Hallmark, Republic, Carolco and Vestron, thus acquiring home video rights to such movies as Basic Instinct, Total Recall, On Golden Pond, Dirty Dancing, Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and many others. Artisan also signed an agreement with Alliance Motion Picture Distribution Company in Canada for distribution of Artisan programs. On September 9, 1998 it furthered its stronghold in home video by licensing all films in Spelling Entertainment’s library. The library has over 3,000 titles including such films as It’s a Wonderful Life, Highlander and Highlander 2, and several Stephen King pictures including The Stand, Thinner and Langoliers.

Artisan is not only a company involved in home video, but in all aspects of entertainment. The company is also is involved a pay-TV output deal with Showtime Networks, as well as an output deal with Hallmark Entertainment. They purchased a share of Summit Entertainment to serve as the international arm for Artisan, and their Family Home Entertainment subsidiary possess a library of widely recognized children’s programming such as Crayola Kids Adventures and The Velveteen Rabbit. At the same time the company is also a leading company in the rapidly developing DVD market by adding hundreds of DVD titles.

Artisan Entertainment made a huge impact in the motion picture industry when it released The Blair Witch Project, a low budget, independent film that grossed over 130 million dollars at the box office. Arguably the most successful film in history, The Blair Witch Project gave Artisan Films instant fame, and opened the door for more films by Artisan to gain national attention in the future. Kevin Bacon helped give the young company credibility when he starred in the film Stir of Echoes, and Johnny Depp will give the company a boost by starring in the up-coming film The Ninth Gate.

Sense 1997 Artisan Entertainment has grown from a no-name home video company, to the largest independent entertainment company in North America. With activities ranging from DVD developing, to movie productions, Artisan Entertainment is perhaps the fastest growing Entertainment Company in history. Although the company is off to a fast start, only time will tell if they will rise up as a force in the entertainment industry.

Film Distribution Joint Venture vertreibt. Zu aktuellen und kommenden Filmen der IM zählen ADAPTATION mit Nicolas Cage und Meryl Streep in der Regie von Spike Jonze, THE QUIET AMERICAN mit Michael Caine und Brendan Fraser, Regie Philip Noyce, NATIONAL SECURITY mit Martin Lawrence in der Regie von Dennis Dugan, THE LIFE OF DAVID GALE mit Kevin Spacey und Kate Winslet, Regie Alan Parker, DARK BLUE mit Kurt Russell und Ving Rhames in der Regie von Ron Shelton, BASIC mit John Travolta and Samuel Jackson, Regie John McTiernan, TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES mit Arnold Schwarzenegger in der Regie von Jonathan Mostow und ALEXANDER mit Colin Farrell, Regie Oliver Stone.

Summit, Intermedia team for international sales super-company

Mike Goodridge in Los Angeles 27 January 2003 04:00

The international business was transformed on Friday as two of its market leaders Intermedia and Summit Entertainment formed a sales, marketing and distribution joint venture called IS Film Distribution which instantly becomes the biggest seller in the marketplace.

As a result, Intermedia and Summit will transfer all their distribution and marketing staff into IS. Intermedia`s distribution chief Jere Hausfater is exiting the company and Summit will handle all future sales on behalf of the joint venture. IS will be based in Summit`s Santa Monica headquarters, although Intermedia`s president of worldwide sales Michael Dragotto will remain at the company to supervise IS Film Distribution activities on behalf of Intermedia.

Speaking from Los Angeles on Friday, Summit CEO Patrick Wachsberger and Intermedia CEO Moritz Borman said that IS is modelled on studio distribution joint venture UIP in that it will handle films produced by either party or films for which either company already has distribution agreements. Both Summit and Intermedia will continue to operate independently of each other, and the joint venture should have no impact on Intermedia`s corporate parent Internationalmedia or its German market listing.

All film development, financing, and production will be handled separately by both companies, although the joint venture could lead to future production collaborations, said the CEOs. Graham King`s Initial Entertainment Group (IEG), which is owned by Intermedia, will remain autonomous and Pamela Pickering will continue to handle distribution on IEG product. "Graham will make a couple of movies a year and will sell them himself," said Borman.

IS begins operating today (Monday) and will start representing both companies at the American Film Market (AFM) next month. "It has major cost-saving elements such as one suite at AFM, fewer trade ads etc," said Borman.

Summit will continue to maintain its London office under David Garrett; ironically former Intermedia sales executive Harold Van Lier moved to Summit in London last summer and is now reconciled with his former bosses.

Borman said that the estimated first year revenue of IS Film Distribution will be in the $300m region, "We have a dominant market position," he said. "There are not many sales companies out there and the timing is right for us to create IS, which is the biggest ever independent sales company."

Borman and Wachsberger have long been in discussion about teaming up but Wachsberger said that the market is such at the moment that size matters. "We will have one strong voice," he said. "International buyers will now have the strongest contract administration, the strongest marketing team and a one-stop shop. No longer will we be playing against each other."

Wachsberger said that IS plans to work with as few companies as possible in each territory. "We both have great relationships with different distributors in each country, but we are now operating totally out of the box. In some territories, we want to help create some companies and help some distributors find financing on the basis of our product."

As yet Hausfater has no set plans. After 14 years in acquisition and sales at The Walt Disney Co, the well-respected executive joined Intermedia as president of worldwide distribution and acquisitions in July 2000. "We wouldn`t be here if he didn`t do that job," said Borman.

Borman said that Intermedia has four new films set for production this year including Oliver Stone`s Alexander The Great project starring Colin Farrell to which Warner Bros recently committed as domestic distributor and Me Again, a thriller with Bruce Willis starring and producing and Dean Parisot directing. No international distribution plans have yet been fixed. Other Intermedia films to be released include Basic (Columbia, domestic) starring John Travolta, The Life Of David Gale with Kevin Spacey and Kate Winslet (Universal, domestic), Dark Blue with Kurt Russell (UA, domestic) and T3: Rise Of The Machines with Arnold Schwarzenegger (Warner Bros, domestic).

Summit meanwhile will continue to represent films from producers such as Alcon Entertainment (Insomnia, The Affair Of The Necklace), Walden Media (Around The World In 80 Days, Holes), Artisan Entertainment (The Ninth Gate, The Blair Witch Project), Constantin Film (Smilla`s Sense Of Snow), Crusader Entertainment (Sahara), Mandalay Pictures (Beyond Borders, Serving Sara), Escape Artists and Newmarket (Memento). Summit`s own productions include horror movie Wrong Turn, a co-production with Constantin Film, and Dot The I which world premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last week.

Intermedia takes world sales rights on Suriyothai

Patrick Frater in Milan 07 November 2002 04:05

Los Angeles-based sales house Intermedia has picked up world sales rights on Suriyothai, the historical epic, which is the largest film ever to come out of Thailand.

Directed by Prince Chatrichalerm Yukol and originally presented in a three hour version at the Pusan festival in November 2001, the film was subsequently re-cut by Francis Ford Coppola, a film-school friend of the prince.

"It is a fabulously crafted piece of work with the look of a very large budget film," said Michael Dragotto, Intermedia president of world sales. "We have been tracking the film since it first opened in Thailand, where it has gone on to become the largest grosser in Thai history."

Coppola, who added new scenes and voice-over commentary, subsequently took the new version to the San Sebastian film festival in September. There it was picked up for the US by Sony Pictures Classics. Coppola, who assumed an executive producer credit and sales rights, is now finalising an international version due to come in at just over two-hours duration.

The film, now titled The Legend Of Suriyothai, has had an involved sales history that matches its complex story. Originally handled by Thai producer and seller GMT Entertainment, Coppola briefly assigned sales duties to Canada’s Cinemavault Releasing. Intermedia picked up the rights on the eve of the market and has already begun closing deals.

Intermedia confirmed that it is in early negotiations to handle Prince Chatri’s new project which is aimed at an early 2004 release, to coincide with the Queen of Thailand’s 72nd birthday.

Summit/IS takes on Jewison`s The Statement

Mike Goodridge in Los Angeles 11 February 2003 04:00

Summit Entertainment has acquired international distribution rights to Norman Jewison’s next picture The Statement starring Michael Caine, Jeremy Northam and Tilda Swinton. Sony Pictures Classics (SPC) has domestic rights to the film.

Set to start shooting in Europe on March 17, The Statement is based on Brian Moore’s novel and was scripted by Ronald Harwood, who has been winning awards for his recent adaptation of Wladyslaw Szpilman’s memoirs The Pianist. Caine plays a man who was once a Nazi executioner but now lives a peaceful life, his identity protected by right-wing power-players including the Catholic Church. But when his case is reopened, he is suddenly put at risk of exposure and becomes the object of pursuit by hit men and police investigators.

Canada’s Robert Lantos is producing the film – his recent credits include Ararat, Stardom and Sunshine – through his Serendipity Point Films and Summit is representing the film at AFM through IS Film Distribution, its sales joint venture with Intermedia. IS will sell all territories excluding those already taken by SPC as part of the initial domestic deal.

The film sees Caine and Jewison work together for the first time. Jewison hasn’t been behind the camera since 1999’s The Hurricane which starred Denzel Washington; Caine who has won acclaim for his leading role in The Quiet American has already completed other roles in The Actors and Secondhand Lions. Northam’s recent credits include The Singing Detective and Possession, while Swinton, who will play a Nazi hunter in the film, has finished Young Adam with Ewan McGregor.

Summit, headed by Patrick Wachsberger, is one of the leading sales and financing independents in the business and recently strengthened its position by its IS alliance with Intermedia. In addition to the Jewison picture, Wachsberger is overseeing sales of Oliver Stone’s Alexander, Dean Parisot’s Me Again with Bruce Willis and Walden Media’s Around The World In 80 Days starring Jackie Chan.
