Die Analysten der Commerzbank stufen in ihrer heutigen Analyse die Aktie von GlaxoSmithKline von „Accumulate“ auf „Reduce“ herunter.

Trotz eines schwachen Dollars, habe das Unternehmen in diesem Jahr outperformed. Die AstraZeneca verhandele derzeit über die Auswirkungen der Konkurrenz durch Generica und die Prognosen würden das reflektieren. Bei GloxaSmithKline gebe es noch immer ein hohes Ausmaß an Unsicherheit über die Wahrscheinlichkeit und das Timing potentieller Konkurrenz bei Kernprodukten- vor allem Paxil und Wellbutrin. Die Commerzbank stufe das Rating herab und senke das Preisziel von 12,50 Pfund auf 11,25 Pfund, um die kurzfristige Zunahme in einem Teilsektor zu reflektieren.

Possible SARS drug boosts Portland firm

Investors are banking on a Portland company that says it can make a drug to combat severe acute respiratory syndrome, SARS, the illness that has spread from Asia.

At least 154 SARS victims have died around the world, out of more than 3,200 cases, most of them in Asia.

Buoyed by reports of a possible SARS drug, AVI BioPharma`s stock, once trading in the penny range, has risen 43 percent since March 28. At times it has traded at a volume of more than a million shares a day, nearly five times the norm.

However, some experts quoted by The Oregonian are dubious, saying the rise in AVI BioPharma`s stock says more about investors` eagerness to find a financial winner than about the probability of a quick cure for SARS.

On Monday, after reports over the weekend that researchers had cracked the genetic code of the virus that causes SARS, AVI`s stock closed up 29 cents, at $4.16, on heavy trading. It gave up some of that ground yesterday, slipping 22 cents to $3.94.

"We would hope that within a couple of weeks we could generate a compound that might be effective," said David Mason, the company`s senior vice president for clinical development and regulatory affairs.

Little is known about how quickly federal regulators would approve such a drug — a process that usually takes five years — and whether that virus could mutate against treatment in the meantime.

Questions also linger about AVI`s ability to survive long enough financially to get the drug approved. The company, which has 85 employees in Portland and Corvallis, has neither achieved sustained profitability nor brought a product to market in 23 years of business.

AVI issued a news release March 20 touting a technology called anti-sense as a possible treatment for SARS. The technology has had some success treating a coronavirus in mice and a similar virus in cats. Scientists think SARS may be a coronavirus. But none of the company`s anti-sense treatments has been tested in humans, Mason said.
