Nokia and Redback Selected for New Moscow City Telephone Broadband Network
Monday March 1, 7:39 am ET
MGTS to Build One of the Largest Broadband Networks in Europe Based on Next-Generation SmartEdge Service Gateway Platform

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 1, 2004-- Nokia (NYSE:NOK - News) and Redback Networks Inc. (Nasdaq:RBAK - News), a leading provider of next-generation broadband networking equipment, today announced together that Moscow City Telephone Network, MGTS, one of the largest telecommunications companies in both Russia and Europe, has selected key broadband infrastructure from both companies. The agreement provides for MGTS to purchase next-generation broadband systems, including the Nokia D500 IP DSLAM and the Redback® SmartEdge® 400 and 800 Service Gateway platforms.

With these new systems MGTS intends to expand and enhance its consumer broadband offering, bringing subscribers a wider choice of services, increased performance and improved reliability throughout the Moscow capital area.

"Together with Nokia, we are helping MGTS build one of the largest, most advanced broadband networks in Europe," said Kevin DeNuccio, chief executive officer and president of Redback Networks. "Like other leading service providers that have selected our SmartEdge Service Gateway platform, MGTS will benefit from the operational efficiency and cost-savings of a platform that can simultaneously support consumer broadband offerings and complex IP services for businesses. This strategic win for Nokia and Redback will position us well for future success."

The Nokia D500 IP DSLAM (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) delivers integrated IP functionality unlike any other DSLAM in the broadband industry. This platform is ideal for MGTS in migrating towards an all-IP network, which brings long-term cost savings and a future-proof investment for the launch of new services. The Redback SmartEdge Service Gateway platform integrates the strengths of Redback`s SMS(TM) software, from one of the world`s most deployed BRAS family of broadband subscriber management systems, with the SmartEdge platform`s purpose-built third-generation hardware and software for carrier-class edge routing.

"Together with Redback, we are pleased to provide the foundation for MGTS to build critical broadband infrastructure," said Markku Hynninen, vice president, networks, Nokia. "Next-generation broadband systems from Nokia and Redback offer a powerful combination of high performance and reliability with capabilities for advanced, value-added services."
