Moin,

New IBM Workstations Hammer Tough Real-World Problems
Jump to first matched term
SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 25, 2000--
IBM Debuts Industry`s First UNIX Workstations with Copper
Microprocessors;
New IntelliStation NT Workstations Solve e-business Challenges
IBM today announced dramatically new IntelliStation(a) NT (R)-based workstations and the first UNIX(b)-based
workstations with copper processors.
The systems strengthen a large family of workstations designed to solve tough computing problems such as
automobile crash simulations, stress failure analysis and non-linear video editing.
The new workstations also demonstrate IBM`s ability to support companies integrating both UNIX- and
Windows(c) NT-based workstations in heterogeneous environments. Many design, visual production and
engineering departments rely on both types of workstations, or use Windows NT-based workstations with
UNIX-based servers, a trend expected to continue.
"DaimlerChrysler recently chose the IBM IntelliStation as our standard NT-based engineering workstation for
several reasons," says Norm Powell, engineering manager at the DaimlerChrysler Technical Computing Center
in Auburn Hills, Mich. "Offering superior performance, the IntelliStation allows us to handle CAD/CAE
(Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Engineering) and Office Applications in a single seat. Another reason
we chose the IBM solution is that we`ll be using the IntelliStation in combination with our large contingent of
UNIX-based RS/6000s, and IBM can help us integrate them."
The announcements were made at IBM`s PartnerWorld 2000 event in San Diego, Calif.
New IBM IntelliStations
The IBM IntelliStation Z Pro features a completely new design, developed for the manipulation of large
quantities of data quickly, and incorporates the highest performance components available. Faster processors,
wider memory channels, and faster memory means designers can develop concepts more quickly and share
them more easily with colleagues in networked development environments. It features the Intel(d) Pentium(d) III
Xeon(d) processor at speeds ranging from 667 to 800 MHz (1), a 133 MHz front-side bus, and up to 2
gigabytes of RAMBUS ECC memory (4 gigabytes with upcoming memory modules). It also features a fast new
Ultra SCSI subsystem at 160 megabytes per second, enabling quick access to data on hard drives, and a
64-bit, 66 MHz PCI bus that doubles the speed and bandwidth of the previous Z Pro. The Z Pro is tested to
work with a large number of graphics adapter cards, including the new high-performance, value-priced ELSA
GLoria II (2) and the new Intense3D Wildcat 4110 (3).
Mechanical features have been enhanced to improve scaleability, including rack-mount capability, four cooling
fans, nine bays and seven slots, and a 490-watt power supply, all of which simplify future growth and
expansion.
IBM also will soon announce improvements for other IntelliStation models. The IntelliStation M Pro will feature
up to two Intel Pentium III processors at up to 800 MHz, fast new ATA66 EIDE hard disk drives, and
compatibility with the new ELSA GLoria II graphics card with 64 megabytes of video memory. And the low-cost
IntelliStation E Pro will feature the Pentium III processor at up to 800 MHz and compatibility with the new
ELSA GLoria II graphics card, in a slim desktop design.
IBM is extremely focused on information security and its IntelliStations feature the industry-leading embedded
Security Chip, which helps protect confidential and valuable information such as new product designs,
prototypes, and other intellectual property. IntelliStations also offer industry-leading manageability features that
help customers lower their total cost of systems ownership, focus more attention on their business and
applications, and spend less time running their network. These management technologies include Wake on
LAN, Asset ID (7), Alert on LAN, SMART Reaction, and LANClient Control Manager 2.5.1, which help
customers deploy and keep track of their PC inventories, monitor system outages and/or tampering, perform
automatic data backup, and remotely manage their systems.
IBM RS/6000 -- World`s Fastest Workstation
Also today, IBM announced the RS/6000 44P Model 270 and Model 170, the first UNIX workstations to have
copper-based microprocessors. Copper increases performance substantially compared with similar chips that
have aluminum wire.
The Model 270 is the world`s fastest 4-way workstation as measured by the SPECfp_rate95 benchmark, which
determines floating-point performance in SMP workstations. Speedy floating-point calculations are essential for
applications that require sophisticated design, analysis and three-dimensional visualization capabilities, like
mechanical crash simulation and computational fluid dynamics.
The workstations, both based on 64-bit technology, demonstrate excellent integer performance and are
capable of handling large and complex three-dimensional models. These characteristics make the Model 270
and Model 170 ideal platforms for mechanical and electrical engineering design, while allowing companies to
achieve the long-sought-after goal of integrating both design and analysis in a single desktop system.
The workstations are intended to enable aerospace, automotive and other manufacturers to better leverage
CATIA or ENOVIA software from IBM and Dassault Systemes. CATIA`s full function and scalability in digital
product design, styling, optimization and 3D digital mockup, and ENOVIA`s ability to model and simulate the
complete product creation process will be enhanced across the extended enterprise.
The RS/6000 44P Model 270, a one- to four-way 375 MHz POWER3-II SMP with up to 8 GB of RAM and 54.6
GB of internal storage, is designed for users who need the increased power and scalability of a symmetric
multiprocessing system. The RS/6000 44P Model 170 is a uniprocessor system available with either a 333
MHz or 400 MHz POWER3-II chip. It is available with up to 2 GB of RAM and 72.8 GB of internal storage.
These affordably-priced RS/6000 models were built with high performance and exceptional reliability in mind.
Each contains a built-in service processor designed to continuously monitor operations and take preventative
or corrective actions as well as perform sophisticated remote system management functions.
New Monitors for IntelliStations
To complement the IntelliStation systems announced today, IBM is offering new models of its "T Series" Thin
Film Transistor (TFT) flat panel monitors and "P Series" Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors, including:
IBM T56A 15-inch TFT Flat Panel Monitor is designed for users who want high performance, sharp and stable
display characteristics in a stylish, space-saving form-factor. Incorporating a 12 percent reduction in bezel
width from IBM`s previous 15-inch TFT flat panel monitor, the IBM T56A includes a pivot feature
accommodating both landscape and portrait screen positions. The T56A offers flicker free images with a
resolution up to 1024 x 768 pels. Available in pearl white and stealth black, the IBM T56A 15-inch flat panel
monitor is generally available, for an estimated reseller price of $1,179 (6).
IBM P96 19-inch CRT Monitor provides advanced users excellent color rendering with minimal glare and image
distortion for the clearest picture possible. Incorporating the latest FD Trinitron (4) flat screen technology, the
IBM P96 delivers truly accurate images with minimal glare and image distortion. The IBM P96 features a
.24mm variable aperture grille pitch. A maximum horizontal frequency of 107kHz delivers an optimum
resolution of 1280 x 1024 pels at 85Hz. Available in pearl white and stealth black, the IBM P96 19-inch flat
screen monitor will be generally available January 28, 2000, for an estimated reseller price of $619 (6).

Habe leider keine Infos gefunden?

weil hohe F&E-Kosten anfallen.
also keinen "Rambus-Standard" zu entwerfen.
So long

The spot pricing for dynamic random access memory (DRAM)
continues to show weakness. The following chart shows the
continued price declines over the past few weeks.
The spike in September 1999 reflects the uncertainty surrounding
manufacturing capacity in Taiwan following the earthquake. Since
then, prices have returned to more sustainable levels.
While pricing is still much stronger than the levels reached in July
1999, when spot pricing bottomed out at $4.55 per MB, the
continued decline does not bode well for DRAM manufacturers such
as Micron Technology (MU : NYSE). Micron reported strong earnings
in the most recent quarter due to higher average selling prices for
memory and high demand. While demand seems to remain strong,
the average selling price has not held as strong.
Prices do tend to fall after the popular holiday season. January has
historically had lower prices than December. As such, the downtrend
in spot prices is not unusual. However, when Micron reported
earnings last quarter, average selling prices were around $9 - $10
per MB. At these lower levels, earnings should not be as strong.
Surprisingly, the drop in memory should benefit Rambus (RMBS :
Nasdaq). With lower selling prices, the cost of purchasing the more
expensive Rambus DRAM is lower for consumers. Therefore, a weak
DRAM pricing environment should help Rambus increase its market
penetration.

also keinen "Rambus-Standard" zu entwerfen.

Are DRAM prices falling to dangerous levels? Fayad Abbasi

DRAM pricing environment should help Rambus increase its market
penetration.
klingt interessant.

Hallo Pitu,
interessante Seite.
auszusehen (bin kein Chart-Techniker).
wieviel Rambus pro Lizenz bzw. pro Stück verdient? Bitte antworten.
Speicher-System zu entwickeln (was keine Rambus-Patente verwendet).

garantiert zuerst Rambus-Systeme kaufen?
Bin immer wieder bullish.

nobelum,
spieler machen einen großteil der pc-user aus...hmmm, was is bei dir ein großteil?
also ich bin kein spieler...aber grundsätzlich hast du recht...
lizenzeinnahmen 2-5%
vielleicht klappt´s beim 3. mal...
