HP to Streamline Storage Management with New Developers Program

Industry`s First Program Based on Storage Management Initiative Specification to Accelerate SMI-S Adoption for Management of Multivendor Network Storage

PALO ALTO, CALIF., JULY 9, 2003
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HP (NYSE:HPQ) has introduced the first developers program completely based on an open, industry-standard interface across storage hardware and software. The HP SMI-S Developers Program facilitates partner development of technologies based on the Storage Management Interface Specification (SMI-S), a secure and reliable interface that allows storage management systems to identify, classify, monitor and control physical and logical resources in a network storage environment.

SMI-S is expected to be ratified by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) this summer.

The goal of the HP SMI-S Developers Program is to accelerate the adoption of SMI-S-based solutions that simplify the interoperability challenges developers face in building storage solutions, thus streamlining management of multivendor network storage. Open to qualified HP partners, program membership today includes AppIQ, BMC Software, CreekPath Systems, Storability Software and VERITAS Software.

"Customers want an open, standard way to manage their complex storage environments and HP has responded by establishing the first partner program for delivering management interoperability via SMI-S," said Don Langeberg, director of marketing, HP Storage Software Division. "Our partners share in this goal and look to HP`s leadership to help them deliver standards-compliant products to market quickly and with the most efficient use of their resources."

The HP SMI-S Developers Program enables system integrators and independent software and hardware vendors to shorten their time to market and lower development and testing costs by removing the need to integrate incompatible interfaces into their products.

Participating partners can leverage HP`s global marketing resources to expand the revenue and market potential of their SMI-S-based HP solutions. The result is that enterprise customers will be able to base their storage purchasing decisions on business needs rather than proprietary technologies and features.

Based on the current SMI-S draft, the program gives partners a competitive head start in developing storage management applications that interoperate with HP storage arrays, including the HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA), Extended Platform (XP), Virtual Array (VA) and Enterprise Modular Array (EMA) families.

The program also offers qualified partners access to SMI-S-based HP storage array interfaces as well as technical and marketing support to enable them to quickly offer SMI-S-compliant solutions. HP`s goal is to provide SMI-S-enabled interoperability across the full range of StorageWorks systems and software.

In addition, the program delivers a set of services to HP`s development partners, including development, support and marketing. A software developer`s kit includes early versions of array providers and device management software, sample code providing examples of how partners can write to SMI-S-compliant interfaces, and supplementary documents. Membership is free to qualified HP partners.

"The continued momentum of SMI-S has the potential to restructure the way the industry approaches storage management, shifting from proprietary fixes to standard SAN device interoperability and management," said Roger Reich, chair of the SMI Committee and member of the board of directors, SNIA. "HP continues to drive industry collaboration toward delivering open, standards-based storage solutions. We applaud HP and its program partners in taking the lead to bring SMI-enabled management to market."

SNIA recently accepted the HP interoperability conformance test as its first tool for multivendor use in assessing the conformance of industry products to the SMI-S standard. HP is currently shipping pre-release 1.0 SMI-S interfaces with the HP StorageWorks Disk Array XP and VA families and plans to add SMI-S providers to the StorageWorks EVA and EMA families later this year.

More information about the HP SMI-S Developers Program is available at the HP Developer and Solution Partner Program home page at http://www.hp.com/dspp. Information about the complete family of HP StorageWorks storage solutions is available at http://www.hp.com/go/storage." target="_blank" rel="nofollow ugc noopener">http://www.hp.com/go/storage.

HP Outfits Perry Ellis International with Servers, Storage and Services

Global Apparel Company Cites Availability, Flexibility and Agility as Key Benefits

PALO ALTO, CALIF., JULY 9, 2003
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HP (NYSE:HPQ) has implemented solutions to build the foundation of an adaptive enterprise at Perry Ellis International, a leading licensor, designer and marketer of high-quality menswear with $1.5 billion in retail sales in 2002. Perry Ellis chose HP StorageWorks storage systems, industry-standard HP ProLiant servers and HP Services to keep operations and worldwide apparel distribution running around the clock.

To remain competitive in a rapidly consolidating industry, Perry Ellis is turning to HP`s integrated approach for better management and control of their business and IT processes. Together, the new storage, servers and services will help drive cost and efficiency advantages and provide the agility to easily meet increasing business demands.

"Design innovation and company acquisitions are driving constant growth and evolution in our family of brands," said Ronen Lapidot, director of networks and telecommunications, Perry Ellis International. "Data demands grow along with our product lines. It`s been a rule of thumb that we double the capacity of our back-end infrastructure every year. HP provides us with a cost-effective solution that gives us flexibility for future growth and helps us deliver 24x7 data availability to our product development teams around the world."

HP Helps Perry Ellis Prepare for Change

When its legacy infrastructure couldn`t adapt to the increasing load, Perry Ellis brought in an HP StorageWorks Virtual Array 7410, HP ProLiant servers and HP mission-critical services. The result has been increased reliability, performance and business agility.

"As we`ve consolidated multiple database instances into our new environment, we`ve seen phenomenal performance increases," said Lapidot. "We`ve optimized our people, processes and systems to be more efficient and effective in supporting and responding to business needs."

Perry Ellis consolidated a suite of mission-critical applications onto an industry-standard server cluster. Two HP ProLiant DL580 G2 servers were implemented to deliver high availability, simplified systems management and increased performance. ProLiant servers are a central component of the HP Adaptive Enterprise vision, meeting the demands of today`s adaptive solutions, including IT consolidation, business continuity and on-demand computing.

HP Services consultants assisted Perry Ellis with the design, implementation and configuration of the server cluster and a storage area network (SAN). This is a complex task that required expertise in planning and design, hardware configuration, network software installation, and verification of operability. Building its SAN around an HP StorageWorks Virtual Array 7410 and HP StorageWorks Auto Path VA for Windows®, the company increased data availability and performance while lowering administrative costs. Perry Ellis also chose HP Critical Systems Support, which delivers both preventative and rapid reactive services to ensure 24x7 availability for the product development teams.

For its backup strategy, Perry Ellis selected a single HP StorageWorks Ultrium 2/20 tape library, which gives the company the ability to grow an additional 300 percent over current needs. The systems management staff uses HP StorageWorks Command View SDM software for storage management and HP StorageWorks Business Copy VA software to take snapshots of the databases.

Internet Pioneer David Reed Joins HP Labs

Networking Research Expected to Enhance HP Adaptive Enterprise Technologies

PALO ALTO, CALIF., JULY 8, 2003
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HP (NYSE:HPQ) today announced that David Reed, one of the pioneers of the Internet, has joined HP Labs.

Reed is recognized as a worldwide expert on networking and contributed significantly to the TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) technology that underlies today`s Internet and World Wide Web.

"We`re honored to add another one of the computer industry`s true luminaries to our team here at HP Labs," said Dick Lampman, senior vice president, research, and director, HP Labs. "We believe David`s continuing work on networks will enhance the HP Adaptive Enterprise architecture and lead to improved return on information assets for our enterprise customers."

Reed has been named an HP Fellow, reporting to Patrick Scaglia, vice president of the Internet and Computing Platforms Research Center at HP Labs. He also will continue as adjunct professor in the Viral Communications group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab, where HP is a major corporate sponsor. Reed also will co-direct the MIT Communications Futures Program.

"David`s deep knowledge of networking will be a tremendous asset as we continue to develop adaptive enterprise technologies that help our customers increase their business agility and utilization of their IT resources," said Scaglia.

"I`ve had the chance to work closely with smart people from HP Labs and HP, Compaq, and Digital many times during the last 25 years when I was at MIT, Software Arts, Lotus and Interval Research. I`ve always respected HP`s ability to transfer technology from the Labs into the businesses," said Reed. "That`s more true today than ever before -- HP`s enormous breadth and depth gives it unique leverage to turn new ideas and research results into technologies that really change the world. I`m really excited and inspired by the opportunity to help invent information systems that may scale to a planet-wide scope."

Reed`s research focuses on designing systems that manage, communicate and manipulate information shared among people. He is best known for co-developing the Internet design principle that underlies today`s Internet and for "Reed`s Law," an assertion that the utility of large networks scales with their size - that is, the larger they are, the more useful they become.

His research at HP Labs will concentrate on network adaptivity and scalability. He also will work on wireless network architectures, one of his key interests for many years.

Reed has been an independent consultant for many years. He also served as senior research scientist at Interval Research Corporation and as vice president and chief scientist for Lotus Development Corporation. Previously, he was vice president of research and development and chief scientist at Software Arts.

He was a faculty member in MIT`s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) from 1978 to 1983, working in the Laboratory for Computer Science. He has earned bachelor`s, master`s, electrical engineering and doctoral degrees in EECS.

Analyst Study: HP OpenView Software Helps IT Overcome Challenge of Proving Business Value

Polled Companies Transformed IT Infrastructures From Cost Centers to Profit Centers Using HP Service Management Software and Solutions

PALO ALTO, CALIF., JULY 8, 2003
      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

According to a recent study by IDC,(1) HP (NYSE:HPQ) enterprise customers have met the challenge of demonstrating that information technology managers can have a substantial impact on their businesses` bottom line - indeed, IT should be seen as a "hero" in the words of the study`s author, rather than a business burden or as costly "overhead."

The analyst firm found that IT managers can move from cost center to profit center by enabling their enterprises to realize substantial IT cost savings and end-user productivity gains using HP OpenView IT service management software to more effectively manage IT network, system and applications resources in support of business operations.

IDC determined that the HP OpenView software delivered a significant and rapid bottom-line "return on IT management" in three areas: IT productivity, IT management efficiency and application availability.

IDC polled HP OpenView customers, measured the efficiency of IT management tools and processes, and calculated that companies deploying HP OpenView reduced downtime by 79 percent with an average return on investment of 1,296 percent. This translated to an average savings in lost revenue of $74,468 per 100 users over three years and an average savings from increased user productivity of $93,712 per 100 users.

"Integrated enterprise IT service management tools, such as the HP OpenView management solutions, can yield extremely rapid returns in savings in IT management efficiency and productivity as well as in reduced system and application unavailability," said Paul Mason, analyst, IDC. "IDC has consistently found that the largest single benefit of integrated enterprise management tools is the reduction in system downtime, with its associated improvements in user productivity and reduction in lost business revenue.

"For the companies surveyed, the average reduction in downtime from deploying HP OpenView was 79 percent. Thus, the investments made by IT can readily be seen as creating real value for the business - making IT a hero instead of a burden."

In today`s business environment, IT managers must be able to justify IT expenditures based on the business value these investments deliver. The IDC study demonstrates the value of software that can manage complex, distributed, heterogeneous infrastructures from the element and operations level to the business service level.

HP OpenView software helps IT managers reduce downtime in network, system and application availability in these environments, assuring that end-user productivity is maximized and that critical business services keep pace with business volatility, respond to competitive threats and deliver a better return on IT.

"The IDC survey validates what the market has known all along - HP OpenView service management solutions help IT management to move from cost center to profit center by significantly reducing IT systems downtime, thus boosting end-user productivity," said Todd DeLaughter, vice president and general manager, HP OpenView Business Unit. "Service management is a critical component in enabling companies to align their IT with their business processes and save on the bottom line."

The HP-commissioned study looked at 14 companies. One of the companies surveyed, Atmos Energy Corporation, is one of the largest all natural gas utility companies in the nation and delivers natural gas to 1.7 million customers in small urban and rural areas across 12 states.

By deploying HP OpenView software, Atmos Energy was able to:

      Substantially increase IT management efficiency, handle more transactions without hiring and automate event response mechanisms;
      Keep IT staffing levels stable, despite doubling the size of its existing network;
      Budget and plan more effectively using HP OpenView historical data capture;
Decrease downtime and increase the average employee`s productivity significantly; and
Increase network availability from 87 percent to almost 100 percent.
Atmos Energy is just one example of HP OpenView customers that are enjoying substantial cost savings and productivity improvements and thus quickly recovering their investments in their IT infrastructures, said DeLaughter.

More information about HP OpenView management software and solutions is available at www.openview.hp.com.

      Hewlett-Packard: Outperform

      07.07.2003 09:42:50
