Samsung slashes handset panel pricing to bump up orders
Sammi Huang, Taipei; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Tuesday 7 July 2015]

As shipments of Samsung Electronics smartphones have been lower-than-expected in the market, Samsung Display has suffered in handset panel shipments and therefore has reduced pricing to various customers including Microsoft to help orders rebound.

Samsung's move has attracted orders from Microsoft for use in 5.7- and 5.2-inch mid-range and high-end smartphones. The 5.7-inch smartphones will use QHD panels from Samsung while the 5.2-inch units will use Full HD panels, according to supply chain sources.

Other makers associated with Samsung's supply chain including driver IC makers are also starting to lower quotes as overall Samsung handset orders are fluctuating and Taiwan makers push cost competitive solutions.

The sources said Samsung's flagship Galaxy S6 in particular has suffered against competition from iPhone 6/6 Plus while entry-level and mid-range handsets have seen increased competition from China vendors such as Lenovo, Huawei Device, Xiaomi and TCL.

Microsoft also aims to increase cooperation with handset vendors in the second half of 2015 in addition to white-box vendors to promote low-priced Windows handsets in emerging markets.

Apple considering Samsung for Apple Watch OLED supply, says report
Vivian Chen, Taipei; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Thursday 2 July 2015]

Apple will reportedly receive OLED displays from Samsung Electronics for the next Apple Watch, according to Korea media source Digital Daily.

There have been numerous rumors from Korea media stating that Apple has been considering Samsung in order to diversify its supply chain but such claims have also been met with just as many reports stating LG will remain the sole supplier.

The report from Digital Daily, however, shed some new light in regards to what consumers can expect from the next Apple Watch. The report said Samsung is working on new modules that would allow the device to be thinner and lighter while the resolution, overall design and touch panel structure will remain the same.

Supply chains meanwhile noted that TPK will continue to remain as the major touch panel supplier and that profits from components for the device will be limited due to the device's small size and limited demand in the market.

Samsung to ramp up shipments of OLED panels, DRAM and flash chips to channels
Cage Chao, Taipei; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Wednesday 1 July 2015]

Samsung Electronics may ramp up the supply of standard parts and components, including OLED panels, DRAM and flash chips at more competitive prices starting the third quarter as inventory levels of these products have piled up due to its tumbling share in the global smartphone market, according to sources at Taiwan's IC supply chain.

Samsung has recently allocated nearly half of its OLED panel production capacity to producing related displays for China-based smartphone vendors, indicated the sources.

In recent years, Samsung has continued ramping up its production of memory chips and display products for its own production of smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices, and therefore has been reluctant to release these parts into the channel market, said the sources.

However, the declining market share has resulted in a build-up of inventories at Samsung, prompting the vendor to liquidate some key parts and components.

In addition to selling parts and components at more competitive prices, Samsung's OEM wafer foundry business has also staged a rebound recently, revealed the sources.

The Korea-based vendor is also expected to accelerate the development of advanced microelectronics manufacture process in order to win back Apple's CPU orders, commented the sources.

Component supplies for Galaxy S6 devices getting tight, say sources
Max Wang, Taipei; Steve Shen, DIGITIMES [Friday 10 April 2015]

Samsung Electronics is adjusting the production at the supply chain for its Galaxy S6 devices due to strong demand for the new smartphones, according to sources at the handset supply chain in Taiwan.

While expecting the new Galaxy S smartphones to enjoy brisk sales, JK Shin, head of Samsung's mobile business, said recently that there would be supply constraints in the near future due to the supply of curved displays used by the Galaxy S6 Edge.

However, sources in Taiwan believe that the production constraints are also likely to cause by the tight supply of other parts and components.

Since market response to the Galaxy S6 devices has been keener than expected, particularly for the Galaxy S6 Edge, Samsung has been forced to adjust production at the supply chain and therefore, causing tight supply for some components and parts, commented the sources.

Meanwhile, Samsung is also looking for a new supplier for curved displays used by the Galaxy S6 Edge, and the industry sources have indicated that Korea-based display maker S-MAC is expected to join the supply chain. Samsung currently purchases the curved displays from Japan-based Alps Electronics.

The new Galaxy devices go on sale in 20 countries on April 10.

Samsung sees 15% of management resign in 2014, says report
Amy Fan, Taipei; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Thursday 2 April 2015]

In 2014 approximately 15% of management staff at Samsung Electronics resigned following lower-than-expected smartphone sales at the company, most notably during the third quarter of the year, according to statistics presented by Korea-based Yonhap News.

Samsung reportedly had 1,219 management staff on board as of the third quarter and that number decreased 177 or 15% by the end of 2014, the report said. Of the 177, 44 were from Samsung's IT & Mobile Communications department.

Meanwhile, several media reports have recently claimed Samsung provides one of the highest average salaries in South Korea, and is expected to implement new flexible working schedules in mid-April.

Samsung to post lower sales and profits for 2014
Vivian Chen, Taipei; Jessie Shen, DIGITIMES [Thursday 8 January 2015]

Based on the company's guidance for the fourth quarter, Samsung Electronics is set to post a sales decline in 2014.

Samsung has disclosed its consolidated sales for the fourth quarter of 2014 are expected to reach KRW52 trillion (US$4.4 billion) or in a range of KRW51-53 trillion compared to KRW47.45 trillion of the previous quarter and KRW59.28 trillion of a year earlier.

Accordingly, Samsung's sales for all of 2014 will total around KRW205.48 trillion, down about 10% from the KRW228.69 trillion reported for the previous year, and marking the first time in nine years that revenues decreased on year.

Samsung forecast its operating profits for fourth-quarter 2014 would total approximately KRW5.2 trillion or range from KRW5.0-5.4 trillion, compared to KRW4.06 trillion a quarter earlier and KRW8.31 trillion a year ago.

Samsung's operating profits for 2014 are likely to reach DW24.94 trillion, slipping 32.2% from 2013 levels and marking the first time in three years that profits registered an on-year drop.

Samsung's IT & mobile communications (IM) division had been accounting for the majority of the vendor's overall operating profits until the third quarter of 2014, when the business' operating profits shrank significantly to KRW1.75 trillion. Meanwhile, net profits generated from Samsung's device solutions (DS) business consisting of the company's semiconductor and display panel units came to KRW2.33 trillion.

      Starke Kursbewegungen in letzter Sekunde
      Hallo
mal was anderes: Ich beobachte die Samsung-Aktie schon seit Jahren. Es gibt bei der 005935.ks ein seltsames Phänomen: Häufig geschieht es, dass in buchstäblich letzte Sekunde des Handelstages der Kurs stark nach oben oder unten springt. Wie zum Beispiel heute:
      http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=005935.ks
Den ganzen Tag dümpelt der Kurs im Minus bei rund 1010000 Won, um dann praktisch bei Handelsende ca. 2 Prozent ins Plus zu schießen.
Jemand eine Ahnung, was das soll?
      Guten Rutsch
