Australian troops ready for Iraq strike: SYDNEY, Dec 18: Australia`s defence force has contingency plans for participation in a possible war against Iraq, Prime Minister John Howard said today. He was commenting on a local newspaper report that elite SAS troops were ready for deployment in the Middle East in March. The report stated that Canberra had agreed to supply three warships and two refuelling aircraft to a military campaign against Iraq. Howard said Australia was not committed to involvement in a war at this stage. "As I`ve indicated earlier, the defence force has to make contingency arrangements but in terms of any political decision, government decision, none has been taken." (DPA) (Posted @ 10:20 PST)

Turk Armed Forces Deny Major Iraq Border Build-Up

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey`s armed forces on Wednesday denied any major build-up of troops on the border with Iraq and said any movements were routine.



Sources in the border region have reported increased numbers of troops along the Iraqi border, with about 15,000 complementing usual deployments. The reports have contributed to falls on Turkish financial markets, already jittery at the prospect of war in Iraq.


"There has been no comprehensive build-up or extraordinary measures in the region other than routine preparations for developments that could take place," the general staff said in its first comment on the issue.


"With the events taking place in our region and the well-known developments it has to be seen as natural for the armed forces to review certain measures and carry out training and exercises," it said in a statement.


NATO (news - web sites) member Turkey is a close ally of the United States and Israel and recently won support from President Bush (news - web sites) for its European Union (news - web sites) membership candidate.


Although reluctant to countenance any war against Iraq, Muslim Turkey is likely to provide the United States with support. Washington may seek use of airbases and permission to send special forces over the border if it finds Iraq has been concealing chemical, nuclear or biological arms programs
