There are rumors circulating among investors that Cisco will announce this afternoon that it is buying Israeli network security company Check Point (Nasdaq: CHKP).
The rumors started after a Cisco Systems spokesperson said that the company would make an important announcement today at 15:30 (Israel time), and would hold a press conference at 17:00. The spokesperson refused to give further details of the nature of the announcement.
Support for the rumors about acquisition of Check Point (which had a market cap yesterday of $3.84 billion) can be found in huge purchases of options on Check Point stock that expire this Friday. Yesterday, 13,000 options with a $17.5 strike price were bought at $0.05 per option, raising the number of open options at this strike price to 14,000. Check Point shares traded yesterday at $15.80, so that exercising the options seems completely illogical, unless a substantial announcement comes along that lifts the share price more than 10.7%. Market sources say the options buyers are insiders who obtained prior information about the deal.
In response to the report, Check point stated that "We do not comment on rumors."

Der Umsatz verbesserte sich von 143,5 auf 156,4 Mio. Dollar. Positive Währungseffekte haben rund 15,2 Mio. Dollar mit dazu beigetragen.
Analysten hatten im Schnitt mit einem Gewinn je Aktie von 12 Cents gerechnet.
