Norilsk Nickel wins Fitch investment grade
By : Ben Aris January 08, 2006
NORILSK Nickel has become Russia’s first quoted company to be awarded an investment grade rating by Fitch and is on its way to replacing Yukos as Russia’s poster boy for good corporate governance.
The company is the world’s largest producer of nickel and platinum, accounting for 20% of all nickel. It also produces 40% of the world’s palladium, 10% of its cobalt and 3% of its copper.
Fitch has rewarded the company, owned by oligarchs Vladimir Potanin and Mikhail Prokhorov, with an upgrade for its rapidly improving corporate governance and healthy finances. The company reported revenues of $3.4bn (£1.9bn, E2.8bn) for the first half of 2005, according to international accounting standards, and net profits of $94m.
Norilsk launched a corporate restructuring in October to boost its market capitalisation from $15bn to $21bn by 2008. More transparent management could add between 18% and 37% to its market capitalisation, says Dmitry Khlebnikov, who is overseeing the makeover. “Personally I don’t see any obstacles to achieving even better stock prices by 2008,” he said.
The restructuring reform involves creating several divisions to run the different business lines and decentralising some functions from headquarters to these divisions.
“The previous management system helped the company achieve its current results,” Khlebnikov said. “Now the company needs different, more flexible tactics.”
Russia scored a hat trick of investment grade ratings at the start of last year and a handful of big state-owned companies has also been given the sought-after investment grade ratings, but Norilsk is the first privately owned company to win this accolade.
“The ratings reflect Norilsk Nickel’s world leading market positions in primary nickel production. The company’s diversified metal commodity mix is underpinned by substantial, high quality, low-cost, long-life mine reserves and a growth strategy focused on core operations,” Fitch said in a statement explaining its upgrade.
Mikhail Galkin, an analyst with Trust Bank, says Norilsk is “the pearl of the Russian economy”. Polyus, its gold subsidiary, is Russia’s biggest gold producer.
