eMagin inks licensing agreement for headset intellectual property

Press release, January 7; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Thursday 7 January 2016]

eMagin has signed a non-exclusive intellectual property (IP) licensing agreement for its 4-megapixel per eye virtual reality headset technology with an undisclosed company. The deal includes an upfront licensing fee of US$1 million and a commitment to use eMagin's 2000 by 2000 pixel full color displays in the company's headsets.

eMagin's OLED microdisplays are increasing in popularity for the Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) markets with features such as their speed (which helps prevent nausea), small size, low power consumption, high brightness and high contrast. These features make eMagin's microdisplays a better choice than alternative liquid crystal based display technologies like LCOS or LCD, said eMagin.

      https://twitter.com/dcuinh?lang=de

      eMagin announces 2014 financial results
Press release; Alex Wolfgram, DIGITIMES [Monday 16 March 2015]

eMagin, a manufacturer of AMOLED microdisplays for high resolution imaging products, has announced its financial results for full year 2014.

Andrew G Sculley, President and CEO, stated, "Fourth quarter revenues increased 18% over third quarter, and 10% on year as our recent R&D contract awards began producing revenues. Historically, these government and non-government awards have been instrumental in fueling our growth and we are excited about the resurgence of this activity. Second, we made progress in key areas during the fourth quarter. Also, we continued making great strides toward production of ultra-high brightness full color OLED microdisplays above 10,000 nits. We recently invested in new direct patterning equipment for this effort. These ultra-high brightness displays will help to accelerate the penetration of our OLED microdisplays into new markets such as avionics and consumer headset applications. We are demonstrating these ultra-high brightness direct patterned displays to our customers. eMagin is leading the industry in this effort for direct patterned OLED at microdisplay pixel sizes."

Company revenues for 2014 were US$25.7 million versus US$28 million for 2013, a decrease of approximately 8%. Product revenues (primarily display sales) totaled US$24.1 million, about 9% less than in 2013. R&D contract revenues totaled US$1.7 million, approximately the same as 2013. Display average selling price increased and the number of displays shipped decreased from a year earlier. The increases in average selling price were a result of changes in product and customer mix, the company said.

Gross margin for 2014 was 29% on gross profit of US$7.4 million compared to a gross margin of 30% on gross profit of US$8.4 million in 2013. The decrease in gross margin from 2014 was primarily due to lower revenues and a higher cost per display, partially offset by a higher average selling price.

Operating expenses for 2014 decreased to US$12.6 million from US$13.6 million in 2013. Operating expenses are comprised of R&D expenses and selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses. R&D expenses decreased to US$4.5 million from US$5 million in 2013. The decrease was due primarily to the requirements of the respective R&D contracts being worked on in each year. SG&A expenses decreased approximately US$0.5 million or 6% from 2013 as a result of decreases in non-cash compensation and personnel costs, offset by an increase in bad debt expense.

Operating loss for 2014 increased slightly to US$5.3 million from US$5.2 million in 2013. Net loss was US$5.3 million or US$0.22 per diluted share, versus a net loss of US$14.1 million or US$0.60 per diluted share for 2013. In 2013, the company booked non-cash charges to Provision for Income Tax of US$8.9 million to establish a full valuation allowance of its deferred tax asset.

The company added that it expects revenues will total between US$26 million to US$29 million in 2015.

eMagin is developing an OLED microdisplay based VR HMD
OLED Microdisplay maker eMagin announced that it is developing a new VR head mounted display (HMD) that use the company's latest high resolution (2K by 2K) OLED microdisplays and patented optics. These two technologies will enable eMagin's HMD to be significantly smaller, lighter and higher in resolution than competing HMDs (such as the Oculus Rift one) that are based on cellphone-sized OLEDs.

eMagin seems to be very excited by the new HMD, which they currently term Immersive HMD, or IHMD (the company will conduct a contest to name the IHMD for the product launch) - saying that their non-traditional approach will achieve a "radically improved and unique form factor".

eMagin expects their first prototype to be completed by the end of 2014. It will offer a resolution of four megapixels per eye and a field of view of over 100 degrees. eMagin sees a wide range of applications for such an HMD, and the first product will target the high-end gaming market.

eMagin is mostly known as a microdisplay producer - but the IHMD won't be the company's first commercial HMD. In 2005 the company developed and marketed the Z800 3D Visor (which was not very successful). It used two SVGA (800x600) OLED microdisplays and provided an immersive view equivalent to a 105" screen at twelve feet.

      Hallo

eMagin To Receive R&D Contract Awards
These awards confirm eMagin’s OLED technology dominance and signal an increase in the company’s contract revenue in the coming quarters

HOPEWELL JUNCTION, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jul. 17, 2014-- eMagin Corporation (NYSE MKT: EMAN) has been notified it will receive a number of R&D contracts over the next 2 months. These awards represent a significant increase in the company’s R&D contract revenue beginning in its third quarter. The company believes these notifications signal an improved outlook for future awards which will allow us to further broaden our technology base and our leadership position in the OLED market.

“We are very pleased our OLED technology leadership and expertise continues to be acknowledged and we look forward to sharing the specifics of these awards as the contracts are signed. eMagin’s ultra-high brightness and high resolution technology is critical to government programs and meets the requirements of the exploding consumer personal headset market. Our recently demonstrated Ultra-high brightness full color OLED technology is capable of over 5,000 cd/m2. New development projects will more than double this capability,” said Andrew G. Sculley, president and CEO of eMagin Corporation.
