Melbourne (vwd) - Die BHP Billiton Ltd, Melbourne, hat im vierten Quartal von einer starken Nachfrage aus Asien, vor allem aus China profitiert. Im Geschäftsjahr (30. Juni) 2002/03 seien 80,3 Mio t Eisenerz ausgeliefert worden, ein Anstieg um 13 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr, teilte das Unternehmen am Donnerstag mit. Die Produktion erhöhte sich um sechs Prozent auf 76,5 Mio t. Nach Angaben von Analysten waren sowohl die Ergebnisse der Sparten Eisenerz, Petroleum als auch Diamanten, leicht besser als erwartet.

BHP Billiton "neutral," estimates raised

LONDON, September 10 (New Ratings) — Analyst Daniel Major of JP Morgan maintains his "neutral" rating on BHP Billiton (BLT.L), while raising his estimates for the company.

In a research note dated September 8 and published this morning, the analyst mentions that BHP Billiton is poised to benefit from the improved commodity prices outlook for the forthcoming years. JP Morgan expects the forecasted increase in nickel prices to particularly boost the company’s earnings growth potential in FY05. However, the current valuation of BHP Billiton’s stock is unattractive, the analyst says.

BHP und Rio Tinto wollen Eisenerzproduktion in China erhöhen
Melbourne/London (vwd) - Die BHP Billiton Ltd, Melbourne, und die Rio Tinto plc, London, wollen ihre Eisenerzproduktion erhöhen. BHP wolle die Kapazität bis 2004 auf jährlich 100 Mio t von bisher 88,5 Mio t erhöhen, teilte das Unternehmen am Montag mit. Rio Tinto habe bis 2006 das Ziel, jährlich 183 Mio t zu produzieren, kündigte Rio Tinto am gleichen Tag an. Derzeit seien es 141,5 t. Beide Unternehmen gingen davon aus, dass die Nachfrage nach Eisenerz in China anziehen werde.

Rio Tinto erwarte, dass die chinesische Stahlnachfrage bis 2010 auf jährlich 300 Mio t steigen werde. Dies seien 95 Mio t mehr als in vorherigen Schätzungen des Unternehmens. BHP gehe sogar von einer noch höheren Nachfrage aus. Grund für die steigende Nachfrage sei der stark wachsende Bausektor in China, hieß es.

BHP Billiton sieht verbesserte Geschäftsaussichten für 2004
Melbourne (vwd) - Die BHP Billiton Ltd, Melbourne, sieht aufgrund des anziehenden Wachstums der Weltwirtschaft verbesserte Aussichten für ihre Geschäfte im kommenden Jahr. Im Jahresbericht der Bergbaugesellschaft, der am Dienstag vorgelegt wurde, zählt Chairman Don Argus zu den positiven Entwicklungen die niedrigen Zinsen in den USA und Europa sowie die Schritte, die in Japan zur Ankurbelung der Wirtschaft unternommen werden. Zwar bewegten sich die Preise in einem wettbewerbsintensiven Umfeld, und die Nachfrage bleibe in einigen Feldern gedrückt, doch insgesamt gesehen könne von einer verbesserten Perspektive gesprochen werden.

Zudem habe sich die Situation in vielen Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern stabilisiert. Insbesondere in China gebe es nach wie vor eine starke Nachfrage nach Rohstoffen. Das Land stelle damit einen der wichtigsten Märkte dar.

BHP Billiton says global economy turned a corner

BHP Billiton`s new chief executive, Chip Goodyear, received a remuneration package of more than $US3.5 million in 2002/03 as the world`s largest diversified miner predicted an improved outlook ahead.

Writing in the group`s 2003 annual report, BHP Billiton chairman Don Argus said the world economy appeared to have turned a corner despite continued excess of capacity and subdued demand.

Mr Argus said pricing, too, remained competitive.

"On balance (the global economy) appears to have turned the corner and, although the outlook remains fragile, a number of positive developments are supporting an improved outlook for 2004," he said. advertisement

These included reduced interest rates in the United States and Europe and moves by Japan to create a more positive economic environment.

Mr Argus said equity markets improved as China continued to "provide a bulwark for commodity markets".

Meanwhile Mr Goodyear said the group aimed to continue increasing the company`s return on capital in years ahead.

"The true indicator of our financial performance is our ability to generate cash throughout the economic cycle," he said.

"We have demonstrated this admirably in the two years since the merger and cash generation will remain a feature in the years ahead."

Mr Goodyear received remuneration for 2002/03 of $US3.54 million ($A5.24 million), according to the annual report.

Mr Goodyear who replaced Brian Gilbertson as chief executive on January 6, 2003, stepping up from a position of executive director and chief financial officer, took home a base salary of $US1.143 million ($A1.69 million) for the 12 months to June 30, 2003.

On top of this he received a cash bonus of $US898,183 ($A1.33 million), deferred shares valued at $US838,364 ($A1.24 million) and retirement benefits totalling $US403,638.

This compared to the $US2.54 million ($A3.76 million) he received in 2001/02 when he was chief financial officer. It also compares to the $US5.06 million ($A7.49 million) in remuneration former CEO Paul Anderson received for the 12 months to June 30 2002.

Mr Gilbertson, who took over from Mr Anderson in early July 2002 before resigning on January 6 this year citing irreconcilable differences with the BHP Billiton board, received $US8.515 million for the 12 months to June 30, 2003 including a termination payment of $US6.707 million.

His package, as previously revealed, included retirement benefits of $US364,313 ($A538,924) and long-term, share-based compensation of $US292,636 ($A432,893.49).

Mr Goodyear`s 2002/03 remuneration included $US368,361 ($A544,912) on long-term share based compensation and a deficit of $US558,909 ($A826,788) for adjustments for deferred share vesting period.

BHP Billiton posted a full year net profit for the year to June 30, 2003, of $US1.920 billion ($A3.01 billion) up from $US1.87 billion ($A2.93 billion) in 2001/02.

Market consensus had estimated profits at $US1.814 billion ($A2.84 billion).

BHP Billiton shares closed up two cents at $10.56.
