      http://www.mineweb.co.za/mineweb/view/mineweb/en/page43?oid=…

      analyst Tom Meyer:
"We believe that First Quantum (TSX: FM), Equinox (TSX:EQN), Northern Dynasty (TSX:NDM) and Frontera Copper (TSX: FCC) should be core holdings in a diversified portfolio," he said. Meyer lifted the target price on First Quantum shares to Cdn$160.00 from Cdn$150.00 and on Equinox Minerals shares from Cdn$5.00 to Cdn$6.00.

First Quantum is the investment dealer's top pick among the large market capital producers as it has the highest earnings growth rate, highest returns, "one of the best project pipelines" and a proven management team. "First Quantum would make an attractive ‘bolt-on' acquisition for a larger producer seeking a foothold in the copperbelt (DRC) or a stronger presence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo."

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shares in First Quantum Minerals rise 2.8 percent, after third-quarter 2008 production results announced Wednesday afternoon which were a new record for the company, with total copper production for the quarter of 82,200 tonnes.

'The company is on track to achieve its stated target for the year of 310,000 tonnes; indeed if the present form is maintained it should achieve around 320,000 tonnes,' Teathers says in a note.

The broker, in order to take account of its current copper price forecast, which in the near term is 'very substantially' below the prices it was previously using, slashes its target price to 3,000 pence from 6,000.

'We do however expect prices to recover somewhat in 2010 and 2011 as China gets back on with its growth programme...,' says the broker, repeating its 'buy' recommendation on the company.

      Dealers highlighting mining stocks
Andrew Willis, today at 1:28 PM EST

While no one is attempting to call a bottom on commodity plays, two major investment banks choose to highlight their 'best ideas' in the mining sector in research reports Wednesday.

After the recent rally in mining stocks, both RBC Dominion Securities and CIBC World Markets highlighted resource companies they see as attractive, long-term plays. These lists came in publications that are meant to catch the interest of investors, and prompt a conversation between the dealers' stockbrokers and their clients. These two houses employ the country's largest retail sales forces, and all those brokers need a steady stream of ideas.

From a big-picture point of view, RBC Dominion's mining analysts said they recommends clients overweight gold stocks, adopt a market weight in uranium and fertilizer names and underweight the base metals and bulk commodity mining companies. The team's “best ideas portfolio” includes Kinross, Goldcorp, Barrick, Cameco, Potash and Agrium.

CIBC World Markets mining analyst Cliff Hale-Sanders took a cautious view on the sector's short-term prospects, saying “the recent rally has been surprising in light of little new positive macro news, and as such we would not chase names with higher prices in the near term.”

But he added: “While the near-term demand outlook remains bleak, we believe it is time to look for the next cycle and invest in names that will see the other side of the valley as the economy recovers.”

CIBC World Markets top mining picks are First Quantum Minerals, FNX Mining, HudBay Minerals, Sherritt International, Teck and Thompson Creek Metals.

First Quantum could build Africa copper smelter

      REUTERS
      June 10, 2009
      By Cameron French

TORONTO (Reuters) - First Quantum Minerals <FM.TO> may consider building a copper smelter in Africa to help ease a capacity shortage that has raised costs at its mines, the company's president said on Wednesday, lifting its shares.
The company said in February it expected to produce copper at an average cost of 80 cents a pound from its three mines in Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mauritania.
However, tight capacity at smelters in Zambia -- including First Quantum's partly owned Mufulira smelter -- has forced the company to send about a third of its mined copper overseas for processing, which adds about 22 cents a pound for each pound exported, the company's president, Clive Newall, said at an investment conference in Toronto.
"Our smelting needs will increase over time, so we're looking at a number of options in that respect," Newall said.
"We don't particularly want to be in the smelting business. But on the other hand, we don't like not being in control of our destiny either."
He said capacity at Mufulira, which is majority owned by Swiss commodities trader Glencore International, had been expected to free up as two Glencore mines were to be idled.
However, rebounding copper prices and pressure from the Zambian government spurred Glencore to keep the mines open, Newall said, which has left First Quantum searching for other takers.
Newall noted the company's smelter needs will only increase as it opens its Kolwezi tailings project in DRC, likely late in 2010.
Shares of Vancouver, British Columbia-based First Quantum were up 7.7 percent at C$55.93 on the Toronto Stock Exchange on Wednesday.
Newall also said the company has been exploring beneath its defunct Lonshi mine in DRC and had uncovered new deposits below the original orebody that have been grading a rich 5-7 percent copper.
Exploratory drilling at the site has been difficult due to the high clay content in the ground, he said, so the company has extended a decline down into the orebody from which it will explore deeper into the deposit.
Assuming the ground conditions allow for mining, Newall said the plan would be to build a small concentrator that could produce about 35,000 tonnes of copper a year, while it continues to explore to see how big the orebody could be.
The company expects to produce 380,000 tonnes of copper and 240,000 ounces of gold this year.

First Quantum snaps up copper and nickel junior Kiwara for US$260 million

      by Andre Lamberti

First Quantum Minerals Ltd (TSX: FM; LSE: FQM) said it has agreed a recommended offer to buy Kiwara PLC (AIM: KIW; JSE: KWR) in a cash and shares deal, valuing the Zambia-focused mineral exploration and development company at approximately US$260.2 million.

Kiwara shareholders will receive 0.0085 First Quantum shares and £0.375 for every Kiwara share held. The implied value of the purchase price is £0.75 per Kiwara share based on an agreed market price of £43.68 for one First Quantum share on the LSE. This represents a 41.5 percent premium to Kiwara’s closing price on AIM on November 20, and a 35.5 percent premium to the volume-weighted average trading price for the 20 trading days ended November 20.

The deal will result in the issuance of approximately 1,884,448 million new First Quantum shares.

The company has approached each director of Kiwara and Cardiff Property PLC, City National Resources High Yield Trust, Derek Joseph, New African Mining Fund, Geiger Counter and Ian Reynolds holding approximately 76.05 percent of Kiwara who have irrevocably undertaken to vote in favour of the deal.

Commenting on the transaction, Kiwara chairman Colin Bird said: "In the evolution of a major mining project, management is constantly faced with matching progress with overall resource capacity. Kiwara has recognized that the Kalumbila (copper) project and indeed the licence area in general, has potential well in excess of our current resource capability.”

“This transaction with First Quantum puts the project into a management team with a proven track record to implement major projects on time and to specification.”

Kiwara’s asset is a controlling interest in mineral prospecting licences on the periphery of the Kabombo Dome in North Western Province, Zambia. The licence area includes the Kalumbila copper deposit. An infill drilling programme is ongoing as part of a study by Snowden Mining Consultancy to advise on a pre-feasibility study at Kalumbila. The initial focus of the study is to establish an indicated resource on the open-pittable mineralization identified by drill results to date.

Also contained in the licence area are the Kawako nickel prospect and the Kawanga uranium prospect. Preliminary drilling carried out to date suggests that both prospects have significant upside potential.

First Quantum chairman and CEO Philip Pascall said: "This transaction is consistent with First Quantum's strategy of acquiring projects to which we can add value by applying our considerable technical expertise. In addition, we believe our many years of successful operations in the Copperbelt and Zambia in particular will be beneficial in the development and eventual operation of the new assets."

First Quantum is engaged in mineral exploration, development and mining. The company produces LME grade "A" copper cathode, copper in concentrate, gold and sulphuric acid. Its assets in Zambia include the 80 percent owned Kansanshi open pit copper-gold mine, the 100 percent owned Fishtie copper project and the 100 percent owned Bwana Mkubwa solvent extraction / electrowinning facility and sulphuric acid plants. First Quantum also holds strategic investments in Mopani Copper Mines, 16.9 percent, operator of the Nkana underground copper mine and cobalt refinery and the Mufulira underground copper mine, smelter and copper refinery, as well as Equinox Minerals Ltd, 16.32 percent, a publicly-traded company that operates the Lumwana copper mine.

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, First Quantum operates the 95 percent owned open pit Frontier copper mine and holds 65 percent in the Kolwezi copper-cobalt tailings project. In Mauritania, First Quantum operates the 80 percent owned Guelb Moghrein copper-gold mine. In Finland, the company owns the Kevitsa nickel-copper-PGE project.
